Chapter 1016
Brennen said. âThat woman is all over her husband like white on rice. She wonât hear a word against him. If youâre fantasizing about her pleading your case to him, youâre barking up the wrong treeâ
Dylan didnât pick up the thread. He just started chowing down, wolfing his food down and washing it down with a few drinks. âIf I were to work for you, what do you want me
to do?â
*Deal with Marcus, of course,â Brennen replied. âYouâve been up close and personal with him for years. You must have your hands on some juicy stuff I want.â
Dylan took a swig straight from the bottle, âI just want to stay alive! My life is in my own hands.â
âSo?â Brennen prodded.
âIâm in,â Dylan declared
Brennen wasnât surprised at all, heâd seen it coming from a mile away. âGreat, hereâs to a fruitful partnership.â
Dylan looked at the hand Brennen extended, hesitantly shook it and said, âI just want to liveâ
âAs long as you want to, you will,â Brennen replied, securing his grip on one of Marcusâ loyalists. A smug grin spread across his face. He couldnât wait to see what Marcus could pull out of his hat against his carefully laid plans. Maybe, in no time, the Hartley Group would be back under his thumb.
Marcus skipped lunch, so Cornelia cooked him a plate of spaghetti. He wasnât really a fan, but because she made it, it tasted good.
While he was eating. Cornelia just sat across from him, watching him. He was not only handsome with an elegant bearing but even his eating manners were a feast for the eyes. She could watch him forever.
Marcus noticed her gaze. âWhy are you staring at me? Got something on my face?â
âYouâre so handsome! Youâre the most handsome man Iâve ever seen!â Cornelia blurted out.
Marcus grinned, âLearned to flatter now,
âNo, I havenât.â She protested
âThen spit it out, Marcus said
have you?â
âBetween you and Brennen..â Cornelia started but the mention of the name immediately darkened Marcusâ face.
âDonât bring him up in front of me, especially not during mealtime. I donât need that scumbag ruining my mood. Didnât you say you were going to clean up your grandmotherâs stuff? Get on it then. Once Iâm done here, weâll head back to Riverton together, Marcus said
âIâve arranged a charity event with Sallie. Weâre helping women. I wonât be able to go back with you,â Comelia replied.
âThen Iâll wait for you,â Marcus said.
âI can go back on my ownâ¦â
Marcus suddenly snapped at her, âI said weâre going back together. This is not a request, itâs a statement.â
