Chapter 1014
Two years ago, it was exactly the time when she and Jeremy got married. During that period, someone was deliberately throwing a wad of cash to tarnish her reputation.
So, was the cashâthrower someone who knew Marcus? And this person who knew Marcus, wanted to push him into a deep pit from which there was no return, and had the power to pull off these wicked schemes. Apart from Brennen, Cornelia couldnât think of a second person
She asked again, âHow did they contact you?â
The woman replied. âThe person was very careful, never contacting us by phone. The person meeting us was always changing, and they always arranged to meet in places without surveillance I havenât been able to get a good look at their faceâ
Cornelia asked, âApart from slandering me, did they ask you to do anything else?â
The woman replied, âNoâ
Cornelia continued to ask, âHas he contacted you since Orlando was jailed?â
The woman shook her head, âNo.â
Cornelia said, âOkay, letâs keep in touch. If he contacts you again, let me know.â
The woman said, âCornelia, Iâm sorry. My husband is the only one bringing home the bacon in my family. He has to support the whole family by himself. I just wanted to bring in a little extra dough, so I took the moneyâ
Cornelia said, âIf he gives you money again, just take itâ
The woman said, âIf he finds out, heâll definitely not let me off easily. Even though I havenât seen his face, I can tell from his back that heâs not an easy person to deal with.â
Cornelia said, âWhatever.â
The woman said. âIf thereâs nothing else, Iâll leave first.â
Cornelia nodded, watching her leave. Once the woman was far away, she whispered, âYou can come out now.â
With her words, Marcusâ tall figure emerged from behind a nearby bush. He had heard the whole conversation between Cornelia and the woman.
Cornelia asked, âDo you have anyone in mind?â
Marcus sneered, âWho else could it be?â
Cornelia thought the same.
Cornelia asked, âIs he doing this to sway the public opinion and tarnish the Hartley Group when you disclose my identity in future?â!
Marcus said. âHe wants to snatch the company from my hands.â
Cornelia asked, âThenâ¦â
Marcus cut her off, âWhat if I let him have it?â
Cornelia was taken aback. She was a little angry. âThe Hartley Group has grown step by step under your management to the scale it has today. Youâve put so much effort Into IL how can you just hand it over to him?â
Marcus said, âIâve only been managing the Hartley Group for a decade or so. Before I took over, it already had a history of nearly a hundred years. There are many complex matters involved. Even though Iâve made a major reshuffle of the internal personnel, there are still some people I couldnât replace due to the large number of employees.
Cornelia had a nagging feeling that something bad was about to happen, âDid Brennen find some leverage to threaten you, or what?â
