For a second, I canât understand why heâs kneeling on the floor. Then heâs taken my hand in his and thereâs no air in the room as I hear his question as though Iâm in a bubble.
âWill you do me the great honour of being my wife?â He slides the friendship bracelet over my finger, wrapping it around twice, so itâs like a bulky double ring.
âOh my god.â I stare at him.
âYouâre going to get married!â Ivy claps her hands and bounces. âCan I be a bridesmaid?â
âShe hasnât agreed to marry me yet,â Lucas says with a twist of humour. âBut yes. You can.â
âYes.â I grab him by the shoulders and pull him up for a kiss.
âIâll get you a proper ring tomorrow,â he murmurs against my lips then kisses me deeply.
âOooohhh. Muw, muw, muw.â Ivy makes exaggerated kissing noises.
For a second I think itâs my laughter shaking him, but I realise when we part that Lucas is grinning too.
My heart is so full of happiness, I could float away.
âYou kissed Nanny Bella.â
âI did,â Lucas says unrepentantly as he moves back onto the sofa. He makes a space between us for Ivy, who hops up into it and looks at us with suspicion.
âNow, I asked you for another bracelet, didnât I?â He pulls the other bracelet from his pocket.
âThatâs a green one,â Ivy says with significant emphasis. âGreen is my favourite colour.â
Lucas nods and holds the bracelet out.
âI was wondering if you would wear a bracelet on your wrist to show that I adopted you, rather than being your guardian? Bella will be a Knight when weâre married. Would you like to be Ivy Knight, and have our surname too?â
Ivy blinks, clearly not seeing the relevance of this.
âIâd like you to officially be my daughter,â Lucas says seriously.
Understanding dawns and absolute joy brightens her face. âCan I call you Daddy?â
âIf youâd like to, Iâd be proud to be your daddy too.â
Ivy squeals and throws herself at Lucas, who grabs her easily in a hug, and she babbles incomprehensibly. The sweetness of it is almost too good, and when Lucas catches my eye, I lean forward and am pulled into the hug.
The three of us are a family. Itâs more than I ever dreamed of.
âWhat did you mean that youâd be my daddy too?â Ivy looks up eventually. âWho elseâs daddy are you?â
I shake my head ruefully. Lucas should know better than to drop that sort of comment and think she wonât notice. Sheâs a smart kid.
Lucas glances over at me, a naughty gleam in his eye, and before I can stop him, says, âJust that thereâs someone else, very special, who will call me Daddyâ¦â
âLucas!â I whisper desperately. I do not want to explain my newly found kink to anyone, least of all a child.
ââ¦when theyâre born. Because Bella and I are going to have a baby.â
âA baby!â Ivy spins and stares at me in shock. âIs it a boy or a girl?â
Behind Ivyâs back, Lucas winks at me.
âIâll always protect you,â he mouths silently.
I sag with relief. I knew that. Of course I knew that.
âWill they be my sister? Or brother?â Ivy demands. âI donât mind which it is, so long as I can be their big sister.â
âYou will definitely be their big sister,â Lucas replies calmly. âAnd we donât know yet whether it will be a boy or a girl.â
Itâs on the tip of my tongue to point out that we donât even know if Iâm pregnant, but one look at Lucas and I know his answer to that. If Iâm not yet pregnant, heâll take great satisfaction in ensuring I am very soon.
And despite the improbability, I think I am.
âIn a few months weâll be able to find out,â I risk saying.
âIf Uncle Lucas is going to be my daddy, and youâre going to get married to himâ¦â She trails off.
âYes.â The answer is obviously yes.
âCan I call you Mommy?â she says after a second, not understanding Iâve already agreed.
Lucas rumbles mock disapproval.
âYou can call me Mummy. Or Mom, if you prefer.â I squeeze her and she giggles. âWe wonât tell Dad that we use American words sometimes.â
âI heard that,â he grumbles, but his eyes are sparkling.
âThis Christmas is nearly perfect,â she says with a serious expression just like her uncleâor her now-dad.
âIt seems pretty perfect to me.â I canât imagine anything better. I have everything Iâve ever wanted. A family, security, love. The sexiest and most caring man in the world has asked me to marry him and have his children, and we have Ivy as a daughter.
âWhat would make it perfect?â Lucas asks indulgently.
Ivy gives us both the most angelic smile imaginable. âCan I have a puppy?â
