I was worried that Abby might get scared by the bloody scene if she woke up.
I gently patted her back, comforting her until she fell asleep again.
Once the child was asleep, I said patiently, âI need to figure out who harmed Abby.
If you know anything, just tell me.
Iâll decide whether to believe you after you speak.
â
Nora sighed and responded weakly, âI donât have any proof.
But before Andrew sent me to the dungeon, I was concerned that my replacement might not be careful enough.
So, I checked Abbyâs clothes, toys, and milk powder thoroughly.
I was sure the milk powder was tampered with after I was taken away.
â
Objectively, Noraâs words werenât very convincing, yet I found myself wanting to believe her.
Perhaps it was her maternal love for Abby that made me feel that someone who loved Abby as I did wouldnât want to harm her.
Calebâs POV:
When I witnessed Nora kneeling before Debra, pleading pitifully, I knew Debraâs heart would soften.
Despite my urge to dismiss Nora immediately, I refrained for Debraâs sake, allowing Nora to express
herself.
As expected, Nora rambled emotionally without sharing anything substantive, reluctant to detail her dealings with Shirley.
Noticing Debraâs growing sympathy for Nora, I intervened.
Standing up, I helped Debra to her feet, speaking firmly.
âYouâre tired.
Take Abby to the guest room and rest.
Iâll handle things here.
â
Debra hesitated, her gaze shifting between Nora, still kneeling, and the baby in her arms.
I stroked her hair reassuringly and said, âIâd worry about you and our child if you overexerted yourself.
Why donât you go rest?â
Eventually, Debra consented with a smile.
âOkay.
â
âIâll walk you to the guest room first,â I offered gently, then nodded to Andrew.
âIâll return shortly.
â
Andrew acknowledged with a nod.
In the room, Debra carefully placed Abby on the bed.
The little girl, oblivious to the turmoil outside, slept peacefully.
Gazing at Abbyâs peaceful expression softened my heart.
Leaning down, I ki*sed her forehead.
Debra watched us, her smile tender.
Compelled, I turned and ki*sed her cheek.
âStay here with Abby.
Iâll come back once Iâm finished.
â
She nodded with a smile.
As I was about to leave, Debra caught my arm.
I looked at her, concerned.
âWhatâs wrong?â
She hesitated, then asked, âAre you going to interrogate Nora?â
I confirmed with a nod, remaining silent.
