Watching Abby content and well-behaved brought a sense of relief.
Debraâs POV:
Nora kept talking about Abby, and we got so caught up in our conversation that we completely lost track of time.
It was only when I noticed the darkness outside that I remembered the promise I had made to Caleb.
Reluctantly, I glanced at Abby, then stood and addressed Nora, âIâm sorry, Iâm not staying at the manor these days.
I need to get going before it gets too late.
â
Noraâs expression changed instantly, her confusion apparent.
âWhy? Arenât you comfortable at the manor? Whatâs making you leave so suddenly?â
I found myself at a loss for words.
It was tough to explain the situation.
Noraâs anxiety grew as I remained silent.
She pressed further, âWhat will happen to Abby if you leave? Are you planning to take her with you?â
Quickly, I reassured her, âNo, Abby will stay here with you.
Itâs safer in the manor.
I just wonât be here overnight.
Iâll come by during the day.
â
Nora still Looked anxious.
âWhat if something happens to Abby? Should I call the butler and Mr.
Pierce, or should I call you?â
I was at a loss for words.
Honestly, I hadnât considered it.
Moreover, it was a half-hour drive from Calebâs place to the manor.
If something were to happen to Abby, could she endure the wait of over half an hour until I arrived? She was so young.
With this troubling thought, a pang of pain struck my heart.
I lifted Abby into my arms and ki*sed her forehead gently.
For a brief moment, I contemplated leaving with Abby.
As her father, Caleb would surely join me in protecting her.
However, catching sight of Noraâs frightened eyes, I set Abby down again.
Until I was certain I could return to the Thorn Edge Pack, it seemed wiser to let Abby remain in the manor.
Here, at least, her safety was assured.
I touched Noraâs shoulder reassuringly and whispered, âIf anything happens, call me right away.
Then get the butler, Andrew, the doctor from the manor, and the experienced maids involved.
They all adore Abby and will be eager to help.
â
âAre you sure?â Nora asked.
Unable to meet her gaze, I simply nodded.
While I was seemingly comforting Nora, I was actually soothing my own anxieties.
This was the only way I could reassure myself that Abby was safe, allowing me to leave and start anew with Caleb.
âWell, if youâve decided, then leave Abby in my care.
Iâll look after her,â Nora said with a firm nod.
I looked at her with deep gratitude.
âThank you,â I expressed sincerely.
Having made arrangements with Nora, I was ready to leave.
But as I swung the door open, there stood Andrew.
