Debraâs POV:
After hearing Noraâs words, my face fell.
But I wasnât worried about my own safety.
What Veronica had done was monstrous, and anger flared within me.
A large-scale massacre of mixed-blood witchesâ¦
The noble and elegant leader of the witch clan was responsible for such a horrific act?
Nora studied my reaction closely.
My gradually paling face must have unsettled her.
In a hushed, almost pleading tone, Nora grasped my hand and said, âDonât breathe a word of the massacre to anyone.
Itâs a taboo subject within the clan.
It will only bring trouble.
â
Taking a deep breath, I quelled my anger.
âDonât worry,â I assured her with a nod.
âI wonât cause problems.
Iâll be careful.
â
Relief washed over Noraâs face as she escorted me out.
After parting ways with Nora, I returned to my room.
The moment I pushed open the door, I saw Caleb sprawled on the sofa, a scowl etched on his face, as if he owned the place.
His lips curled into a sneer.
âWelcome back, future wife of the deputy leader.
I see youâve enjoyed the dinner party.
Otherwise you wouldnât be here so late.
â
My body and spirit were exhausted, and Noraâs revelation left a bitter taste in my mouth.
I wasnât in the mood for Calebâs antics.
In a curt tone, I reminded him, âBehave.
â
âBut I am behaving,â Caleb countered, feigning innocence.
My gaze held his steadily.
âYou know the dinner party never happened.
You also know Andrewâs injured and in the hospital.
â
A smug smile spread across Calebâs face at my bluntness.
âYou see, you do understand me.
No wonder youâre my Luna, my love.
â
His sweet words disgusted me.
âThen why are you trying to rile me up?â
Sensing my rising irritation, Caleb approached and wrapped his arms around me.
âI just wanted to see if
youâd confide in me,â he explained.
A familiar yet foreign scent enveloped me, sending a wave of awkwardness through me.
I shoved him away with a sigh.
âGrow up.
This is childish.
â
âIâm only childish with you, my love,â he replied confidently.
I let out a helpless sigh.
âAnything important you need to tell me? If no, Iâm heading for a shower and some rest.
â
Caleb seemed to register my exhaustion.
A hint of apology flickered in his eyes.
âEven your eyes look tired.
Go get cleaned up.
I laid out your pajamas in the bathroom.
â
I walked past him and made a beeline for the bathroom.
True to his word, my pajamas were neatly folded and waiting, along with a fresh tube of toothpaste on my toothbrush.
