I could tell she was not only puzzled but somewhat thrilled.
Debra gazed at Dylan, her eyes wide with shock.
After a brief pause, she asked hesitantly, âWhy do you call me mom? Are you my child?â
This question seemed to stun Dylan as well.
He froze, staring back at Debra, too shocked to even wipe away his tears.
âMommy, donât you know me?â
Debra bit her lip, reluctant to upset the boy.
After a momentâs hesitation, she shook her head and admitted, âIâm sorry, I donât know who you are.
Who are you?â
Dylanâs grip on Debra slackened.
He turned to me, his expression one of confusion.
âDaddy, why doesnât Mommy recognize me after just a short time away?â
I rubbed my forehead and let out a silent sigh.
I had expected this might happen.
Just as I was about to figure out how to explain things, Carlos interrupted with a shout.
âHey!â While fighting off the remaining vampires, Carlos called out to me and Debra.
âStop talking, both of you.
This isnât the time for a chat.
We havenât beaten all the vampires yet.
We need to focus on that!â
Calebâs POV:
At that moment, I knew I had to kill Edward once and for all.
But before I could make my move, the other vampires spotted us and charged at Dylan.
âWatch out!â I shouted, trying to get to Dylan and Debra to protect them.
But Debra was quicker than I expected.
She grabbed Dylan and dodged the vampiresâ attack, pulling him to safety.
Meanwhile, Edward used the chaos to his advantage.
He got up and slipped behind the vampires, out of my reach.
âKilL them!â
The vampires looked threatening.
They attacked without a second thought.
As they swarmed us, I realized they were too many to take down quickly.
I stepped in front of Dylan and Debra, whispering, âDebra, just keep Dylan safe.
Iâll take care of both of you.
Donât worry.
Weâre going to get through this.
â
Debra looked at me, her face unreadable, yet she nodded and said, âOkay, donât worry.
Iâll make sure heâs safe.
â
Before I could react, Edwardâs voice came from behind, sharp and clear.
âDamn witch! You wonât get away this time!â
We needed to protect a child, and the odds were against us, heavily favoring the vampires.
Seeing the situation tilt in his favor, Edwardâs confidence returned.
He sneered, âJust a half-blood witch, meddling in werewolf and vampire matters, trying to help a werewolf against us? Remember, without that wizardâs help, you and your child would have been dead at my hands.
â
Your child?
That phrase struck me, filling me with confusion.
What child?
