âOkay.
â
Yet, the sparkle in their eyes faded.
This left me feeling hollow and troubled.
It was getting late.
After making arrangements for Alexandria to leave, I carried the kids to their room and soothed them to sleep.
At dawn that day, I started work early.
Since my fatherâs passing, I had taken over as the Alpha of the pack, with all official responsibilities now mine.
Despite Alexandriaâs help, work had accumulated because I often led search parties for Debra.
Meanwhile, Alexandria had been looking after the kids and hadnât handled much work.
Walking into the office, I saw piles of documents on the desk, which kept me very busy.
I had just finished work when the clock struck noon.
The sudden phone call from my mother jolted me with its urgent tone.
Her voice was frantic as she exclaimed, âCaleb, terrible news! The child is missing!â
In that moment, my mind went blank.
The coffee cup slipped from my grasp and shattered loudly on the floor.
I couldnât bring myself to clean it up.
Anxiously, I asked, âMom, who are you talking about? Whoâs missing?â
Jenifer was panting, too out of breath to reply.
Thankfully, Alexandria was there with her.
She grabbed the phone and explained, âAlpha, itâs Dylan.
Heâs gone missing! Your mother and I have looked everywhere, and weâve even set the servants on a search, but thereâs no sign of him.
â
Elenaâs distressed sobs filtered through the phone.
âI need to see Dylanâ¦â she cried.
My head pounded with a sharp pain.
Ignoring the rest of my paperwork, I dashed out of the office and drove as fast as I could to the villa.
Upon arriving, I found Elena in tears and Jenifer fraught with worry.
Alexandria was by their side, trying to console them.
I asked, âAlexandria, whatâs happening? Werenât you supposed to be watching the kids? Why is Dylan missing?â
âIâm not sure.
I got here early today, like always, to look after them.
We were playing, and I told them to stay in the Living room while I stepped out to the bathroom.
But when I returned, Dylan was gone, and only Elena was there,â Alexandria replied, sounding guilty.
She then pulled out a note and added, âDylan left this.
He wrote that heâs going to find his mom.
He mentioned he isnât scared of vampires.
He also apologized.
â
Taking the note from her, I read it with a furrowed brow.
It was indeed in Dylanâs handwriting.
Besides what Alexandria had relayed, it read, âDad, Iâm sorry to trouble you.
You donât need to come after me.
Iâve made up my mind.
â
âAlpha, Iâm so sorry.
This is all on me.
I shouldnât have left for the bathroom.
I messed up watching Dylan,â Alexandria sobbed.
