After a fierce battle, Carlos emerged victorious.
âGood job,â I managed, my voice raspy.
âNaturally.
â He offered a smirk.
âYour safety and the childrenâs are paramount.
I kept an eye on you during the fight.
â
He then wasted no time and rejoined the battle.
His surprise attack turned the tide; the vampires were now on the defensive.
Overwhelmed by the relentless werewolves, they were soon defeated and subsequently captured.
Panting, Carlos returned.
âAre you alright? I saw you get hit.
â
âJust a scratch.
â I dismissed his concern.
âYour timing was impeccable.
â
âWaahâ¦â Elena, still in my arms, suddenly burst into tears.
Her gaze had been fixed on the bloody wound on my shoulder, and now, overwhelmed with guilt, she finally sobbed.
âDaddy, Iâm so sorry! I shouldnât have run off!â
Her voice softened as she choked out a question, her eyes filled with heartache.
âDaddy, does it hurt?â
Her small hand hovered hesitantly, wanting to touch the wound but held back by fear.
I gently wiped away her tears with a tissue.
âItâs alright, Elena.
It doesnât hurt a bit.
Donât you worry.
â
But my reassurances seemed to open a floodgate.
Tears streamed down her face as remorse washed over her.
âDaddy, Iâm so sorry! This is all my fault! I was willful, and now youâre hurt!â
Dylan joined in, clinging to me and crying.
âDaddy, Iâm sorry too.
I understand now! I wonât be stubborn anymore!â
Calebâs POV:
Taking a look at my bloody wound and then at the werewolves lying around, I let out a deep sigh.
Even though we won tonight, it was a rough victory with a bunch of us badly hurt and a couple not making it, the air heavy with the smell of blood.
Honestly, I was so mad because this mess was all because of my two kids acting stupid, and it put our guards in a tough spot trying to keep them safe.
But since they were still young, I didnât want them feeling guilty or carrying any regrets.
After thinking it over, I made sure they didnât see the injured and spoke gently to reassure them.
âItâs okay.
You donât need to blame yourselves.
Dadâs not feeling any pain, not a bit.
â
Carlos also jumped in to comfort Elena and Dylan, saying, âDonât worry, your dadâs wound isnât too bad.
Itâll be all healed up in a few days.
â
âReally?â
The kidsâ faces were wet with tears, their eyes and noses looking puffy.
