âHello, the number you have dialed is currently unavailable,â an emotionless automated voice responded from the other end.
At such a moment, that voice was especially unsettling.
âiihatâs happening?â
Calebâs eyebrows knotted with worry.
Undeterred, he tried calling several more times, but each attempt ended with the same message: no response.
Caleb and I looked at each other, our eyes reflecting our deep concern.
âWe canât wait any longer!â I declared as I stood up.
Caleb quickly grabbed his coat, turned to me, and motioned with his hand.
âLetâs go!â
We quickly made our way outside together.
As we walked, Caleb kept attempting to call Jenifer.
He continuously dialed without pause.
Finally, just as we approached the villaâs door, a sound that seemed like a blessing rang out.
Thank goodness, the call went through.
Debraâs POV:
The moment the phone was answered, Caleb and I held our breath, our hearts pounding.
Caleb, initially shocked, quickly grasped the situation.
A glimmer of joy flickered across his face as he asked nervously, âMom, where are you right now? And the children?â
After a few buzzes, Jeniferâs voice came through, sounding rushed, as if she was inconvenienced by the call.
âDonât worry.
Iâm currently bringing the children back to your villa.
Thereâs been no trouble.
My phone was just on silent, so I missed your calls and couldnât answer right away.
â
âSo thatâs what happened.
â
Caleb and I sighed with relief, our tense nerves finally relaxing upon hearing Jeniferâs explanation.
It was a relief that everything was alright.
I had been worried sick about the murder case, fearing the children might meet a fate similar to the killerâs other victims, leaving me trembling and my mind in chaos.
Now that I knew they were safe, I could breathe easy.
But Caleb wasnât as quickly relieved as I was; he still harbored some fear and caution.
âMom, there have been disturbances in the pack lately.
Please come back with the children quickly, do not delay on the road, and be constantly vigilant for safety.
â
âOkayâ¦â
