Unsure if he was simply curious or if he was genuinely worried about the womanâs safety, Levant quickly chased after her.
After leaving the winery, the woman covered her face and continued to bawl. Then, she wiped her tears with her hands before slamming herself into the wall of a nearby villa.
He rushed over to the woman once more and held her tightly.
âLet go of me! What do you think youâre doing? Let go now!â the woman shouted as she struggled.
âSo youâre going for the wall after the pillar? Youâre so young. Itâd be a shame to throw your life away like that. Whatever it is, Iâm sure you can work it out.â
The woman continued to wipe her tears. âIâll do whatever I want. That wall doesnât belong to you, so why do you care?â
Levant could tell that the woman was determined to kill herself because of how hard she struggled. Left with no choice, he knocked her out and carried her into the winery.
His servant was shocked to see him carrying someone inside and asked curiously, âWho might this be, Mr. Levant?â
âSomeone I saved from death.â
Caleb, his servant, was stunned but quickly caught up with Levant when he realized that his master was trying to do good.
After placing the woman in a guest room, Caleb asked Levant curiously, âMr. Levant, did she try to kill herself because sheâs in some kind of trouble? Sheâs quite good-looking.â
âShe wouldnât run into a wall after running into a pillar if she werenât. Iâll ask her why she did such a stupid thing when sheâs awake.â
Caleb continued to look curiously at the man before him. He knew his master was not the kind of man to meddle in other peopleâs business, which made him surprised to see Levant do something so out of the blue.
Why would he care about a random suicidal woman? Unlessâ¦
No. Thereâs no way Mr. Levant wouldâve fallen for this woman. He only has eyes for Ms. Lane, so why would he suddenly have a change of heart?
An hour later, the woman opened her eyes and began to look around frantically.
âWhere am I?â
âLevant Winery.â
The woman knitted her brows when she remembered how she had slammed herself onto the pillar and the wall. Tears started to well up in her eyes, and before long, she was bawling again.
âNo matter what, you shouldnât give up on your life,â Levant chided.
The woman covered her face as she tried to choke back her tears.
Levant let out a long sigh. He thought he had a tough life, but looking at the woman, he realized that there were others who had it even tougher.
Iâm sure Iâm not the only one suffering in this world.
âAre you in some kind of trouble?â
The woman felt even worse because of Levantâs question, but she wiped her tears and replied with a broken voice, âI am nothing.â
âWhy do you say that?â Levant had said a similar thing when his wedding was ruined.
He did not expect the woman to feel the same way about herself as he did himself.
After calming herself down, the tear-streaked woman started to share her story.
âIâm a divorcee.â
âSo what? A lot of people have gotten divorced. Thatâs not the reason why you wanted to kill yourself, is it?â
The woman shook her head vigorously.
âNo, of course itâs not. The divorce wasnât easy, but I never thought about ending my life because of it. I wanted to kill myself because⦠I donât have a place in this world. My future looks bleak, and I really donât want to go through the same thing again. Iâm so scared of going through another failed marriage⦠So scared⦠â
Realizing that the woman had been through some hard times, Levant frowned, pulling up a chair to listen to her. Perhaps she had kept her feelings to herself for too long, so she was willing to answer any questions he had.
âDonât you have a family? Why didnât you go back to your parents after the divorce?â
The woman took a deep breath. âI did. I stayed at a vacant house that my family owned, but thatâs not my house, and itâs a terrible feeling to live under some elseâs roof.â At that point, the woman lifted her head to look at him. âHave you read âThe Allure of Loveâ by Camina Larson?â
