Turned out, Nicole and Evan got into an argument.
But Evan has been secretly helping Nicole. Everything was going well, so shouldnât the two of them be getting closer? How did they suddenly get into a fight?
âI will go find out more about this, okay? You two just sit tight and play your games,â said Davin before he quickly ran up the stairs to go to the study room.
Davin saw, via the glass window, that Evan was leaning against the bench as his long, beautiful fingers held a cigarette.
Smoke swirled around him, and that added a sense of depression and suspicion to his cold and proud expression.
That was the classic look of a man being troubled by love.
Davin sighed before he walked into the room.
Evanâs gaze flicked to Davin for a brief moment before asking, âWhat are you doing here?â
âI came to visit my nephews. Whatâs wrong, Evan? You seem troubled.â
âIâm fine.â
Davin was speechless.
Evan was never the kind of man who could share his feelings easily.
âEvan, are you troubled by matters of the heart? I can help you. As you know, I have a rather painful experience with love as well, soâ¦â
Evan still seemed troubled, so Davin cleared his throat and changed his tactics. Davin continued, âNaturally, you can take me as a listener as well. Tell me your story. Youâll feel much better afterward.â
âIâm fine,â insisted Evan.
Davin didnât know how to react to that.
Dang, he really can keep a secret, huh? Well, he has never been a gossip, so I guess that makes sense.
âEvan, donât you trust me?â
Evan shifted his gaze to Davin before replying, âThereâs no point in sharing anything because the result is the same.â
âCâmon, Evan, just tell me. I promise I wonât spill a word to anyone else. Scoutâs honor,â said Davin as he looked sincerely into Evanâs eyes. The former also drew the insignia of his scout over his chest.
Evan hesitated for a little while before he scoffed and replied, âFine, if you really want to know, then answer me this one question. Would a woman remember and fall for the guy who helped her the most? Wait, no, thatâs not right. The question should be this. If a woman loves a man, then she would ignore all the kind gestures of another man, right? She might be thankful for the other manâs help, and she might be touched, but she wouldnât fall for that other man because her heart was already filled. She loves the first man dearly, and he is the only one for her.â
Evan turned quiet, and his lips curved into a self-mocking grin.
That got Davin suspicious. He pushed by asking what Evan meant when he said those words.
âNicole is in love with Mayaâs and Ninaâs biological father, so she remained unmoved despite all the things Iâve done for her. In fact, she was a little burdened by it,â answered Evan.
This is just like when I thought that the rumors would help her, but it actually troubled her because she worried about that other man misreading the situation. thought Evan.
Davin was lost. He couldnât help but frown and stare at Evan in bewilderment.
âErm⦠Evan, how do you know that she is in love with the girlsâ biological dad?â
âShe said it herself.â
Davin turned quiet. Youâre their biological dad, which means that Nicole is in love with you⦠Except you donât know that youâre the father. So Evan being mad about this would mean⦠Holy, heâs basically his own love rival who is infuriating and upsetting himself! That is justâ¦
âWow, Nicole, you must be really upset to have fooled him like this,â whispered Davin.
Evan didnât catch that, so he turned to Davin and asked, âWhat did you say?â
âN-nothing. I just think that maybe thereâs a misunderstanding.â
âShe made things loud and clear, so there couldnât be any misunderstandings.â
Davin stood there without saying a word because he honestly didnât know what to say.
He was tempted to call Nicole immediately to ask her what everything was all about. Was she angry? Was that why she deliberately phrased things weirdly to piss Evan off?
A series of footsteps suddenly rang up from outside the study room, and Sheila barged in a second later.
Davin jumped back and looked like he had seen a ghost. âHoly moly! What are you doing here?â
