Cadeâs POV Dad stared at Lexus. âYouâre what? Is this a joke? No one have been true mates in centuries.â
Lexus looked at me. âTell him.â
There wasnât much I could say because there was no way for me to confirm it. âAqua thinks they are too, she said it feels obvious. They were planning on rejecting each other under the full moon during the ball but⦠yeah.â
Dad sighed. âNo one can know youâre helping us and when we find her you canât stick around.â
âI know.â Lexus shrugged. I wasnât sure if heâd be able to, but he was able to stay away from her for this long.
After what he did I wasnât sure if I was going to be able to trust him. âSheâs not with Mae and sheâs not with her motherâs family.â I looked down at my phone and Sadia was calling me. She had been calling me all day, but I havenât got the chance to answer. I sent her to voicemail again and I got a text from her: Itâs an emergency, I have to tell you something. Meet me at the pack house as soon as possible.
âI tried looking in the human world, but the problem is itâs hard for me to cover a lot of ground quickly while having to keep hidden.â He explained.
Dad reached into his pocket. âWe have a fix for that. The castle mage gave us these rings to make us appear invisible when we shift.â
âI can go with you guys for a look in the outside world now, but I canât be gone for long.â I texted Sadia back: Does tonight sound okay?
Sadia responded: Yeah thatâs fine.
We shifted into our dragon forms and went without the rest of the guards. We couldnât let them see that we were with Lexus. When we got their Dad gave Lexus a ring and we flew low.
After a while Lexus landed in the woods close to Maeâs familyâs home. We all shifted back. âSheâs here.â
âThis was the first place we looked when we came to this world a week ago. Howâd we miss her? Are you sure?â Dad asked. We followed Lexus to the cottage we checked at before. âMaeâs old mentor Betty lives here, she said she hadnât seen Aqua and that sheâd let me know if she does.â
Lexus shrugged. âDo you believe her?â
Dad didnât look sure. âNot completely, no.â
âYou guys head back because I think itâll be worse if weâre all here. She knows you two probably want to take her back.â Lexus was trying to get us to leave, and I didnât trust him.
I walked to the door. âNo, were not leaving.â I knocked on the door and an elderly woman answered.
âWhoâ¦â She stopped when she saw my father behind us. âKonn I told you sheâs not here.â She tried to close the door, but Lexus stopped it. âHer scent is strong inside.â
âOh great, you must be Lexus.â She opened the door. âAqua is gone.â She admitted. âShe left a few days ago.â We walked in to make sure. âSure, come in,â She said sarcastically.
We looked around. Now I could tell Aquaâs scent was lingering. Lexus must really be her mate from smelling it from so far away. Why him of all people? My sister deserved better. âWhereâd she go?â
Betty looked at me. âI didnât ask.â Neither her nor Mae cared enough to ask. âSheâs a capable young woman who none of you need to worry about. Itâs beyond my knowledge why youâd even want to take her back to that place. It was killing her.â
âYouâre being dramatic.â Dad said while staring some enchanted jewelry.
âShe was sick, blood running down her eyes when she tried to use her abilities, migraines, low energy, and a broken heart. She was depressed and physically weak. She was healthy when she left because I cared for her. She tried telling your king and queen, but they didnât care. They just wanted to exploit her.â Mae said a similar thing about being overworked. Aqua looked terrible but I assumed it was because she missed Lexus and wasnât taking care of herself. In reality it was because of her workload.
âI donât want her being worked to death and neither does her mother.â She looked at Dad and Lexus.
âYou both shouldnât either, none of you should.â
Dad shook his head. âItâs not that simple. If she would have told me I could have done something.â
Maybe she shouldnât have had to tell us. I shouldnât have tried to force anything out of her. âMaybe she tried to tell meâ¦â He had come to the realization.
Lexus left but we didnât. âYou can take one of those.â Betty said to Dad. âI noticed the enchanted jewelry were catching your eye. They belonged to Mae and she enchanted them.â She gestured to the display box next to them. âAnd Aqua enchanted those.â
Dad walked away from the display cases. âIâm fine. Thanks for your help, weâre going to go.â
I followed Dad out of the house. âYou would have taken one if it werenât for me being there right?â
âLetâs focus on finding your sister Cade.â Dad was avoiding the question. âI thought you forgave me.â
I thought I did too but seeing Lexus took me a few steps back. Surprisingly, Lexus was still around, just waiting for us. âLet me know when youâre ready to search somewhere else. Iâm obviously helping.â He was right, we wouldnât have even known Aqua was here if not for him.
Dad nodded. âLexus⦠if we find Aqua. If you really are mates I donât expect you to stay away. Leave with her and donât come back.â
âWhat?â I questioned.
Dad looked at me. âI donât want her to be worked to death Cade. Iâm not sure if I really could get them to lighten up on her workload. Iâm not as close to the king as I used to be. I care about her.â I cared about her to. âIf the moon goddess chose for them to be together I trust her. I trust what Betty said about Aqua even if she lied to me before. I especially trust Mae because sheâs Aquaâs mother.â I couldnât argue against that.
