I hadnât seen Aqua all day except for in piano class. It was hard being around her when I knew things between us were over. We didnât speak to each other after. Since Cade and Konn knew what was going on they were fine with us not working together until Tuesday. Cade was going to aid for me again until then.
I was finally let in to speak with my parents. Cade waited outside for me. âWhat did you want to talk to us about?â My father asked.
âIâve been thinking about my upcoming marriage.â
âAre you having doubts?â Mother asked.
I sighed because I never had to talk to them about something like this. âYes, but the main thing I want to discuss is if I decided to call off my engagement would there be any limitation to who I could marry? I want to know if I started to look again.â
Mother looked disappointed; I wasnât used to seeing that. âItâs awfully late to call off your engagement.
Itâs public but if you were sure about calling it off, I donât see why there would be any limitations.â
âWeâd prefer you marry a dragon shifter.â My father said. âYou probably shouldnât marry any of our workers or any reporters either.â There it was.
âAnd what if I did want to marry a worker?â
Mom frowned. âThat sounds like a scandal Lexus, whatâs gotten into you? I thought you loved Sadia.
Sheâd make an amazing Queen.â
âWhat if mates were still a thing?â I wanted them to be thinking about my exact situation without knowing it was my exact situation. âWhat if one of the workers were my mate, in that scenario would it be acceptable?â
âWhy are we answering impossible hypotheticals Lexus? Itâs not acceptable to marry someone who works in the castle, it would be inappropriate. Your adviser being from the human world is a lot to deal with already. We donât need to add another controversy.â
Mother sighed. âAre you actually interested in an employee?â
âNo mother, I wanted to know the details around my limitations. Iâm guessing hybrids are also unacceptable?â Aqua might have been a hybrid so that would have been two problems.
âItâs fine if you absolutely must.â Father approved but that didnât mean much.
There was nothing else for me to ask and itâs not like I could convince them. âThatâs all, thank you for your time.â
Cade walked beside me after I walked out. âHowâd it go? What did you even talk to them about?â
âI gave them hypothetical questions that werenât really hypothetical.â I looked down at my phone when it started ringing.
âIt was about Aqua? There wasnât any point in that, they donât approve right?â Cade was annoying me.
âThey didnât but you already know that.â I answered my phone. âHey Sadia.â
âCan I see you?â She asked. âWe havenât spent that much time together and I really want to. Me and Cade did a few things for wedding planning yesterday.â
I wasnât interested in wedding planning. âIâm fine with anything you choose Sadia.â
âYou didnât answer my question. Can I come see you?â she asked again.
âCome over later tonight.â This wasnât the best time for us to see each other. Especially because Aqua was on my mind.
âOh okay. Are you with Aqua?â I wasnât expecting her to ask that.
I didnât have to lie, and I wouldnât have. âNo, I just spoke with my parents and now Iâm with Cadeâ She couldnât expect me to say no since Aqua is my aid, but I did say no. âI'll see you Sadia.â
âIâll see you tonight, bye.â She said before hanging up.
I sat down at the window seat. âHannah would make a good Queen, wouldnât she?â
Cade sat down. âDo you really like my sister that much? You would break off your engagement and give up the throne for her?â I wasnât sure what the throne meant to me. I thought it was cool I was going to be King and rule. I felt prepared but itâs not like ruling was my passion.
Would it be bad if the answer to his question were, yes? âMaybe but not if it ruins my relationship with my family. If I gave up the crown to marry the adviser, it would be a scandal. My parents are afraid of our people seeing us as a joke like many other famous families.â I wasnât super close with my family, but I was close enough with them to know I didnât want to be disowned. âWe have to be a respectable family in everything we do.â It wasnât ever a problem for me until now. âIâll go through with the rejection if thatâs what Aqua wants.â I sighed. âI saw her with Calvin yesterday. She must have met up with him after she basically broke up with me. Iâve never felt so jealous before. Konn knows everything now too.â
I didnât want Konn to look at me any differently, but he might have. If anything, heâll probably see himself in me since he an affair too.
âOh.â He looked away. âAqua wouldnât tell me much about what happened yesterday. I didnât know my Father knew so Iâm guessing a lot more happened than just meeting her mother. Did my father go with you guys?â
I leaned my head against the window. âIf she didnât want to tell you details then I canât.â
âThatâs bullshit.â
I sighed. âHow? Itâs personal.â
Cade rolled his eyes. âMy mother told me the same thing recently. Family shouldnât be this closed off from each other.â
âKonn didnât go with us.â I answered his original question the way Konn wanted me to. âThatâs all I can say. Whatâs going on with Lynn? Sheâs still upset over an affair that happened twenty years ago?â
Cade leaned over with his elbows on his thighs. âI donât expect you to have an ounce of empathy for her situation but yeah. She said sheâs not going to leave him so thatâs good. It really messed her up. I just hope she doesnât take it out on Aqua.â
I watched Gray, Kaya, and Polly run around the open area in front of us. âIt would be stupid if she did.â
Cade looked at them. âHey, stop running around inside.â
Gray stopped and rolled his eyes. âWhatever.â He walked to us. âLexus, my Dad wonât let me go to the ball, can you please let me go? Iâm going to bring Kaya and Polly with me.â
I chuckled. âAnyone I invite needs to have been approved two weeks ago.â
Gray pouted. âOkay.â
âGray.â Cade said to get his attention. âYouâre not mad at Aqua for being the holder, right?â
âHeâs not.â Kaya spoke for him. âHe wants to be the holder but heâs not mad at her.â Gray nodded in agreement.
âAre you okay with Aqua being a part of our family?â Cade asked.
Gray looked confused. âSheâs been a part of our family, sheâs older than me.â
Cade chuckled. âI mean are you okay with her spending time with us?â
âThatâs what family does.â Gray looked at Kaya. âYou spend time with Polly.â
Kaya nodded. âNow you have a sister like I do.â
âGuys, letâs go see if the butterflies are by the fountain again,â Polly said.
We watched them run off. âWhyâd you ask him those questions?â
Cade shrugged. âBecause of something my mom said.â
