Peace then dashed to the kitchen happily. At the thought that she would have to spend a large sum of money, Anna sighed helplessly. Then she made an âOKâ gesture to Karl, who was busy occupying his territory.
Then Karl said to Anna gratefully, â-Thank you for coaxing Peace for me, Anna.â
When Peace returned to the living room with the dessert, she heard Karl screaming in agony on the couch. Sitting next to him, Tammy applied a sticker to Martinâs cheek triumphantly.
Martin pouted and complained, âYouâre so bad at the game, Daddy! You kept losing it and Tammy kept putting stickers on my face. Look at my face! Itâs full of stickers!â
âPlease, Wayne, let me win at least for once!â Karl begged. He was even more devastated. He had come here to seek justice with Wayne, but he failed once more.
Wayne fiddled with Tammyâs two pigtails. Smiling gently, he said to Karl dismissively, âHow about we play another game?â
Peace, who was standing nearby and realizing what had happened, shoved the plate into Annaâs hands and then took a step forward. She then pushed Karl away from the couch and was ready for a tough fight.
The moment she sat on the couch, she said to Wayne in a challenging tone, âStop bullying my husband and my son! Let me play with you.â
âHere comes our savior,â Karl and Martin said at the same time, their eyes twinkling with joy. -441 Was It Love?
The battle of the game was intense. Anna left the living room in time to avoid being involved in the fight. She walked across the long, winding corridor to the opposite side of the parlor, where she found Peter and Matthew playing chess.
They were both sitting in antique wooden chairs. While Peter was cheerful, Matthew looked solemn. Tammy had grown tired of that game, so she also followed Anna and watched them play chess.
âMatthew, go this way! Listen to me,â Tammy said. She was standing behind Matthew with wide eyes, and she didnât have the patience to wait for him to take his time and make a move. She made the decision for Matthew right away.
Staring at the wrong pieces that had fallen on the board, Matthew appeared resigned. Then he turned his head to face Tammy and uttered, âIâve already told you...â
Tammy said immediately, interrupting him, âI know. You told me to be quiet. But now, | need you to hurry up and finish this game because | have something to say to you.â
âThen it does not count, Great-grandpa,â Matthew said to Peter as he wanted to relocate the piece.
âNow that youâve made your move, you donât have the chance to regret your decision,â Peter said, holding the folding fan and stopping Matthew.
Peter smiled smugly as if he were a child. He was in poor health and appeared sluggish as he leaned back in his chair. His mind, however, was still active. And he finally realized he had a chance to defeat Matthew.
Awhile later, Peter won the game. Tammy blinked and commented, âMatthew, you were too careless. You couldâve defeated great-grandpa.â 441 Was It Love?
âSays the person who made a move without my permission,â Matthew said to Tammy in dissatisfaction.
Peter said with a smug smile. âIt appears that | am still the best chess player in this room.â Then he said to Isabella, who was sitting aside, âLittle girl, itâs your turn now.â
Isabella looked up, closed her notebook and showed a smile. She didnât seem as sullen as she was just now. She shooed Tammy from her seat, and then she took a seat across from Peter.
With a smug, Isabella said, âIf | win, Iâll be the best chess player in the room. Jasper taught me how to play chess, after all.â
Anna froze, then asked Tammy, âIsabella seems to be in a bad mood. What happened on your trip to Saipan?â
Tammy chuckled, leaned in close to Annaâs ear, and told her what happened. She looked through her phone for a moment before handing it to Anna, It was a news app with local news from Birmingham. Anna examined the entire interface and gradually became serious about it.
She was meticulous in her search for key information among those news reports.
âSearching for Miss Thomas in the whole city.â
âWhereâs the mysterious and enchanting Miss Thomas?â
âDo you miss your blonde boy as Valentineâs Day approaches? Alex, an American boy, has been waiting at the airport for three days. He is looking for the girl he loves as Valentineâs Day approaches. However, the mysterious girl has yet to show up. Do you know Isabella Thomas, who is 18 years old? Please retweet this post to help set the tone for this romantic holiday. On Valentineâs Day, we will hold a random drawing for a mystery prize.â â441 Was It Love?
Anna realized that this was a promotional advertisement made by a jewelry store. Frowning, she raised her head, and asked Tammy, âDo you believe that Isabella is the girl who is playing chess with your great grandfather? Do you know how many Isabella girls there are in the entire city? It appears to be a marketing ploy devised by businessmen.â
Seeing that Anna didnât seem to believe her words, Tammy snatched the phone from her grasp, furious at her questioning, She said, â| noticed Isabella searching for news the other day, and she appeared upset. You can doubt me, but you should trust Uncle Ryan. He had the same doubts as | do.â
After hearing her words, Anna froze, her hands clutching the hem of her skirt. She remembered the pale face of a teenager right away. He had blond hair and blue eyes, and the stubble that covered nearly his entire chin gave him a more mature appearance.
However, his clear eyes still showed that he was an adolescent. Anna had met him at the airport the other day.
Those reporters had a knack for taking pictures, and the photos they chose were very striking. In that photo, the teenage boy looked handsome but lonely. The text next to the image was very romantic, and it was enough to make the girls fall for him.
Everyone ate lunch on time, and the atmosphere was dull and solemn.
Anna asked cautiously about the battle and discovered that Peace and Wayne were neck and neck. However, because Martinâs face was obscured by notes, Karl, who was watching the battle, had to fill in. Then, Peace began to crumble.
Anna was more concerned with what was going on on the other side. Peter lost three times to Isabella and thus lost the title of âchess king.â He 44] Was It Love? appeared dissatisfied âMaybe you can invite Jasper over someday, and Iâll play chess with him,â Peter said to Isabella stubbornly after a long time of eating quietly.
âOkay,â Isabella replied âI lost to you because I did it on purpose. Iâl still be the chess king if beat him.â
Isabella said with a nod, âOkay. But, twenty years ago, he was already the national chess champion.â
After dinner, Anna took Isabella to the living room, saying she needed to talk to her privately. Isabella expected her to say something about chess, but she didnât expect her to pull out her phone and turn on the news page.
Isabella sniffled as she avoided Annaâs probing gaze. âThere are so many Isabellas in the entire city! Do you think itâs me?â She said.
âIf youâre honest with me now, | can make things right. If you donât, Iâl call Jasper later and ask him to investigate it.â
âNo! Iâm telling you right now!â Isabellaâs eyes widened in horror as she heard Jasperâs name and begged her not to do it. She then took a seat on the couch. After a while of silence, she told Anna what had happened between her and Alex.
âSo, you and Alex are not a couple, but heâs got a huge crush on you?â Anna looked at Isabella and asked suspiciously.
Isabella simply nodded. Then, Anna remembered what had happened and got a headache. She said, âIsabella, youâre an adult now. If you have feelings for Alex, Jasper and | will not stand in your way. Perhaps you could go meet him.â
As Isabella looked up again, Anna realized that she was crying. She was trembling while holding Annaâs hand tightly.
Anna felt heartbroken. She knew that Isabella had just turned 18 and was not yet mature enough to understand what she should do. But she appeared obstinate as if she would never change her mind once she had made the decision.
Isabella attempted to change and believed she had succeeded in letting go of Jasper. Then she ran into Jasper again and found he was divorced. And all of her efforts seemed futile and absurd to her.
Anna understood how she felt. âDonât worry, dear, III help you solve this,â she hugged Isabella tightly and patted her shoulder, comforting her ina soft voice.
Isabellaâs warm tears fell on Annaâs shoulders. Still, she tried desperately to stop crying.
Then she heard Anna say, âLater, Peter will invite you to play chess with him again. Let him win, will you? Youâll always be my chess queen, anyways.â
Having made sure Isabella calmed down, Anna left the house alone.
