It was clear from He Xiyanâs frown that she was in a bad mood.
Jiang Cheng immediately smiled politely at her.
âSure, Auntie,â he said with a smile.
ââ
A black Audi drove into the Ye family castle in the evening and a middle-aged couple stepped out of the car.
The middle-aged man was Jiang Chengâs father, Jiang Zhentao. He might be in his fifties but he looked like he was only in his forties. His sharp suit and leather shoes gave him an air of maturity and made him look like a perfect gentleman.
The middle-aged woman was Wang Min and she was Jiang Chenâs mother. She had a pair of beautiful almond-shaped eyes.
They walked past the gates of the Ye family castle arm in arm carrying a bag of presents each in their hands.
They had been smiling widely since they got off the car and the way they were acting made it seem like they were here to attend a dinner function.
Ye Hao was still not home, so He Xiyan and her daughter Ye Zixi greeted the visitors.
He Xiyan went downstairs and she frowned the moment she saw this middle-aged couple but she couldnât explain why she had frowned.
Wang Min walked over and greeted her enthusiastically when she spotted her walking down the spiral staircase.
âHello, you must be the in-laws. Iâm really sorry for only dropping by now. We really should have paid you a visit earlier,â Wang Min said with a smile and He Xiyanâs skin crawled when she heard Wang Minâs voice.
Her eyes widened and paid no heed to social niceties as she looked at this middle-aged woman who seemed to be around her age assessingly.
She felt very ill at ease when she heard Wang Min address her at the âin-lawsâ.
Her daughter was only dating Jiang Cheng and they were not even married yet, so why was she addressing her as âin-lawsâ?
He Xiyanâs lips curved into an awkward smile as she greeted Wang Min.
âHello, you must be Jiang Chengâs mother,â she said politely.
Jiang Chengâs father Jiang Zhendong walked over as well and greeted her with a wide smile. âHello, Mrs. Ye.â
He was a little more perceptive and did not address her as an âin-lawâ to avoid making things awkward for the both of them.
âHelloâ¦â she said as she shook both their hands and invited them to the living room downstairs.
The maids had already prepared some snacks and fruits for the visitors.
Wang Min took Xi Xiâs hand in hers and walked behind He Xiyan. She seemed so excited that Xi Xi might as well be her biological daughter.
âXi Xiâ¦â Wang Min said excitedly and her face was flushed red.
âHow do you feel? Are you feeling alright?â she asked anxiously as she looked at Xi Xiâs flat belly.
Her grandchild was growing inside Xi Xiâs belly.
She was so excited at the thought that she couldnât sleep.
Xi Xi smiled politely as though she wasnât comfortable being on such friendly terms with strangers and she pulled her hand away.
âAuntie, Iâm feeling fine,â she said.
Wang Min beamed widely as she sidled up to Xi Xi and whispered, âDonât worry, Xi Xi. Iâll go over to care for you as your belly grows bigger. Let me know what youâd like to eat and Iâd cook anything youâd like to eat.â
Xi Xi didnât know how to react and she didnât know how to dampen Jiang Chengâs motherâs enthusiasm.
She didnât want to live with her parents because she enjoyed her freedom.
âOh yes, is your father around?â Wang Min asked when she realized that Ye Hao wasnât in the room. Mr. Ye should have been at home since they had given advance notice of their visit this evening.
