I completely lose track of time sitting there with the brown wolf still guarding me, when suddenly, I hear a loud, victorious howl and jump up. The brown wolf looks at me and then down, and I obediently sit down next to him again. After all, I can’t be sure if it’s over. Maybe I misinterpreted it.

As I peer into the distance alongside my guardian, I spot a pair of golden eyes swiftly drawing near.

“Alvarius!”

I call his name and look at the brown wolf. He nods and gets up. I run to Alvarius and hug his soft silver fur, tears streaming down my face.

“I’m so happy you’re safe!”

He pushes his snout into my side, his warm breath making me shiver from pleasure as I close my eyes. After warming me up a little, he turns toward the brown wolf and they seem to communicate somehow.

After a while, the brown wolf bows his head to Alvarius and turns to me, doing the same. I nod my head politely, and he runs off into the dark. I look after him until I can’t see him anymore and then Alvarius nudges my side.

I hug him tightly as he snuggles into my chest. Once I let go, he helps me up, takes my hand into his snout, and starts walking. I smile at the thought that it’s almost like holding hands as he brings me to the door.

I take out one of the stone bricks from the wall higher up and take out the spare key I hid there. Once I open the door, I hide it again and go inside. Alvarius pulls me toward the couch and sits me down, grabbing the blanket into his snout and covering me. He whimpers when his gaze falls on my arm.
