In the year 2020
"Happy birthday Mel!!!" Everyone yelled. I smiled brightly.
"Come on make a wish and blow the candles!!" My family and few of my cousins shouted as they crowded around me. I did as I told and made a wish before blowing the candle.
I wish I get the same power as my dad; the air element or mom's; the earth element.
I blew the candles and then cut the cake. Everybody cheered. I finally turn 17 today!! Just one more year and I'll be a full grown adult!
"Time for presents Mel!" My elder sister (cousin) said. I nodded and followed after her.
After present opening, my cousins and relatives all left and went back to their own houses. I sat on the couch beside my mother and my father. I sighed. It was such an amazing day. I yawned loudly.
"Sweetie why don't you go and sleep now? It's already past midnight." Mom said in her sweet voice. I yawned again before getting up and kissing her and dad on their cheeks and headed up to my room.
Once I hit the warm sheets I was dragged into my dreamland.
Dream
I looked around to only find darkness around me. This is a bit scary. There was no one here except for me and it was creeping the hell out of me!
"You have to get ready....." I heard someone's voice and whipped my face in the direction it came from. But I saw no one.
"Who's there?" I asked.
"They're coming for you..." The voice said again.
"W - Who is?" I asked.
"He's waking up....You don't have much time....You have to master your powers quickly.....and also gather the others...." The voice whispered once again.
"W - Who's waking up? What powers? I haven't gotten them yet. And who are these 'others'? " I asked but before I could get any answers the scene before me started to fade away.
End of dream
I woke up with a cold sweat, my breathing laboured. I put my hand to my forehead.
"What was that? Powers? But I haven't even acquired them yet." I said to myself. Ugh. All this thinking is giving me a headache. I should just forget about it and go take a nice shower and then spend the rest of my Sunday lazing around or reading a novel. I got off my bed and headed for the bathroom.
After a nice warm shower I came out with a white towel wrapped around my small body. I picked out an oversized violet T shirt and black leggings. I tied my hair in a messy bun and looked at myself in the mirror.
Hi there!! I'm Melanie Grace. I just turned 17 yesterday. I have mid waist dark brown hair with red highlights. Yeah I know. How weird. Right? But I haven't dyed my hair or anything. It's like this from the day I was born. And to be honest, it's really weird for someone to have hair like mine. So I prefer staying at home than going out.
Well then....Umm....I'm 5' 3" tall. I live in a two storey house in a decent and nice society with my mom and dad. I don't have any siblings. But many cousins. Annnnddddd.........no boyfriend. Nope. Not once. That's it for now.
I need to go and have my breakfast! I should tell you one thing, I completely, utterly LOVE food!! I'll die without it! It's my bae! I'll rather have my food than have a guy with whom I have to spend almost half of my day. Anyways let's go downstairs!
I took my seat on the table to the right of my dad who was sitting at the head of the table. My mom then came and sat down to his left. I helped myself by serving me some boiled eggs, pancakes, bacon, sandwiches, croissants and orange juice. Also some salad and fruits. Mom says I need to have more fibre. Bleh. I'm more into meat and junk. Though I work the fat out too.
After a filling breakfast I laid down on the couch and started reading my novel. That's when the doorbell rang. Mom went to open it.
I peaked from behind my novel. I couldn't see clearly but I was sure it was a man and also a woman.
I sat up straight. And as soon as I did all eyes were on me. My mom squealed and ran to me, pulling me into a hug. What the hell is going on?!
"What's going on here, dear?" My dad asked coming into the scene.
"Our daughter got her powers dear!!" Mom cheered. Wait what? I got my powers? I got my powers?!! Holy shit!!
"What?! Really?!" Dad exclaimed. Mom nodded her head vigorously.
"These people are from Elemental academy. They've come to take Mel!!" Mom pointed at the two people standing on our doorstep. They had expressionless faces but I saw shock and a bit fear in their eyes. I sighed.
"Yea I know. But my hair has been this way since a long time. Ever since I was born." I said. They just nodded.
"You have till evening to pack all your things. We'll send a car here by 5:30pm. Be ready by then. All other information, you'll get it in the academy." The woman said and they both walked out.
My mother was jumping up and down in glee. She grabbed my hand dragged me upstairs. She removed a two huge suitcases, a duffle bag and also a backpack.
She started filling them all with my clothes, shoes, bathroom necessities, etc. My one entire suitcase was filled with my shoes. Yup. I have tonnes of shoes. Be it sneakers, sport shoes, heels, wedges, boots, flip flops, sandals and just normal casual shoes.
My mom was searching for something in my closet while I sat on the bed playing on my game console.
"Aha!" My mom shouted as she pulled out two really beautiful dresses.
Something I would prefer not wearing unless my life depended on it. I looked at it warily. One was above knee length and was black. The other one was red and reached my knees.
"And what are they for mom?" I asked.
"Prom of course!!" She said smiling wide. She packed it in with the other clothes at the bottom. I took my backpack and placed my wallet, game console, a blue tooth speaker, spare earphones, a charger and home keys. I even kept a few of my novels in it. I changed into a black hoodie and ripped jeans.
I stuffed my phone in my jeans pocket and tied my hair in a messy ponytail letting a few strands frame my face. I grabbed my luggage and went down to spend whatever time left with my parents. They told me about their experiences in the Elemental Academy. It was where they first met too.
Soon it was time for me to leave. The car had arrived and was waiting for me outside. I hugged my parents tight. I didn't feel like leaving them.
"I'm gonna miss you'll a lot." I whispered, a few tears in my eyes.
"We will too sweetie. We'll miss you so much." Dad said.
It was the first time I was going somewhere faraway without them. And that too for 9 months. I'll be seeing them directly in summer vacation now, after 9 months. I hope they send us back for Christmas break.
I finally broke apart from them and walked towards the car with my luggage in hand.
"We love you!" Mom yelled.
"I love you'll too!" I yelled back. I sat in the car and waved to them as it moved forward. I looked straight once they were out of sight.
"Excuse me? But could you tell me how long it would take to reach the academy?" I asked.
"4 hours miss." He replied. I nodded and plugged my earphones into my ears and played my favourite songs.

"You got a nice voice." The driver said. I smiled slightly.
"Thanks. I sing when I'm nervous." I confessed. He chuckled.
"Don't worry. Everyone goes through it. And it's gonna be a real fun place. The professors and all are really nice. And don't worry you'll jell in easily." He said.
"Thanks." I said.
"But hey, why are you covering your head?" He asked.
I had worn a hoodie and covered my hard with it so as to not show anyone my hair.
"I like wearing it that way." I said. He just shrugged and kept driving. I put in my earphones once again and this time only humming the tune.
Time slowly passed and I soon started to drift off into a sweet slumber. The only sounds I heard were my music and the wheels of the car screeching against the road.
