Chapter 40: Sugarcoat [Wednesday x Male Reader]

Wednesday (One Shots and Imagines)Words: 11802

Y/N loved the summer. Fields of long grass with yellowing tips, weeds growing with flowers for heads- birds soaring down to crop fields to peck at the newly sprouting vegetation. He adored the evenings where he could lay on a thick blanket, in the orange-pink sunsets with Wednesday tight by his side.

He loved feeling the heated breeze trickle across his legs and arms. He loved staying up until that same warm breeze blew harder than the grass could fight against. He loved watching the summer sun fade below the surrounding trees to make view to the hundreds of other stars in the night sky.

Wednesday, surprisingly, loved the summer too- although it was a newfound love. All be it, for some other reasons. While she disliked lying under the sun for hours on end, and she hated the sun's red colouring, there were a few things she adored. She loved the way her hair was hot to the touch under the bright light in the sky. She loved the way her skin began to freckle and how they became more prominent the longer they lay in those fields. She loved how the deep orange and red all around made his bright eyes so obvious, like they could belong to Hera, or Aphrodite, or Hebe- or any of the Gods of Beauty for that matter. Too pretty to be true.

She loved that he would change his attire with the seasons. She loved how he would ditch jackets in favour of thin linen shirts. He would cast away the old blue jeans so he could wear a plethora of shorts. He loved that she gave up on the thick socks he'd usually wear and instead opt for socks that would allow more of that sticky warm breeze to catch on the hairs of his legs. She loved that as the seasons rolled by, so would his personality- how he could change and grow, much like the uncut meadows that they were sprawled across each other in.

That was why, when Wednesday got to spend these summer days together with Y/N, she wasn't focused on the squirrels in the trees or flocking birds overhead- she wasn't interested in the lush grasses or pretty flowers, because the only sun she needed was the one lay beside her. A light that could shine so bright that even her cheeks caught onto a red blush- or perhaps that just happened when he would say something to embarrass her. While he unknowingly watched the clouds burn up in a hue of red-orange haze, she observed Y/N. She watched, attentively inspecting his freckles that painted his soft, growingly tan skin. She was almost certain that if you gave her the resources and a big blank canvas, she could paint the exact position of all of them.

"Wends'?" Y/N spoke up as he continued to gaze up at the sky.

The raven haired girl didn't move her head as she answered. "Yes?"

Y/N shifted on the warm blanket as he found a more comfortable way to lie- the fabric creasing beneath his shuffling limbs as he moved. He settled on his side where he faced her, looking intently. "Why do you like me?" He questioned. "And don't give me one of your usual sarcastic responses- tell me why you really put up with me."

Still taking in his beauty- Wednesday's features turned sour at Y/N's question. Her usual cold, sharp voice amassed into nothing more than the quiet sounds of escaping air as her dark lips quivered- lips that soon tightly pursed together.

Y/N raised his brow at her reaction to her question- she usually loved mind provoking questions- but it seemed like something had got the cat's tongue. It wasn't often that she didn't have an answer for something. "That is... a complicated question." She responded eventually.

"And you don't have an answer?" He asked- as if attempting to guess what her response would be before she gave one, a skill he was still far from mastering."

Her response was quick and short, as to insist he was wrong. "No, I do have an answer. I am just not sure how to put it into words." She assured with a warm tone to her usually monotone chime. She watched as Y/N's head finally turned to face hers- and their eyes locked as he waited for her explanation. Picking up on his expression, she could see it was one of the uncomfortable topics for her that he would not move from until he got his answer. Lips pursed tight together, she exhaled sharply through her nose. "Most... Most people are mortified of death. A lost of people are scared of spiders, or tight spaces, or the dark... But I- I'm afraid of being alone." Wednesday explained.

Y/N furrowed his brows tight together. "So I was just the first thing to crop up that made you a little less scared?"

Wednesday was quick to shake her head. "No, of course not. You are much more than that, mi amor." She spoke softly. A silence than settled over them like a musky- dusty haze. And it wasn't exactly comfortable and their eyes were still intertwined by gaze. Wednesday's tongue slithered along the inner lining of her lips. She had more she wanted to say, needed to say- but intimate words were not a strength of hers.

Y/N let a quiet sigh escape his lightly parted lips. Of course- he didn't expect much more from her, she was stunted in the ways of intimacy and that was okay- he just needed to be more patient. It could just be frustrating sometimes. The sun burned behind the trees- but enough light was let through to burn his retinas', causing him to break their battle. "We should get back... Its getting dark." Despite his facial demeanour displaying signs of annoyance- his voice remained warm and tender. He planted his hands either side of himself and sat up from his relaxed lying position.

"-I like your 'shit-eating grin'." She blurted put- catching herself and Y/N off guard with her direct and impolite language. She balled her fists in a ditch attempt to stop her shaking hands. "You know... the one you give when you know your right about something?" She added.

A grin grew on his lips- one not too dissimilar to the one she was referring to. It then turned into a small laugh. He pushed him self to his feet as he brushed off the loose petals that had clung to his white socks. "I thought I said not to give me one of your sarcastic answers." He stated.

She observed how he elegantly helped himself up to his feet. Her features remained straight and stern. "You just did another thing I like." She commented.

"I did? Laughing?" He asked her, raising a brow. He could feel her cold gaze on him- cutting through the still hot air like a butcher's knife through flesh.

She shook her head lightly in return. "I do... I do like your laugh but that wasn't it." She answered before leaving him time to take another guess. Y/N took his time but yielded no response. "You're bossy- demanding." She responded. Y/N gave a confused response, shown by his brows knitting tightly together and his narrowing eyes. Clearly he had not caught on. Wednesday then proceeded to imitate him, "Did you choose to ignore the fact I told you not to be sarcastic?" She mimicked.

Y/N merely responded with a scoff. He bent down to grab the ends of the warm blanket, tugging it from beneath her. This caused her to roll into the thick grass- still though, her eyes remained locked on his figure as he folded the blanket up and shoved it into his bag. A smile threatened to pull at the corners of her mouth.

"I love when you get all sensitive when I make fun of you, because I know you're going to be so proud of yourself when you figure out a way to get back at me." She continued, before getting to her feet. One of her pale hands began reaching over to rest on his upper arm, his thumb caressing his bare skin beneath the rolled up linen shirt skin. He seemed to make no effort to reply but he also didn't shrug off her gentle touch like he often would after they had a disagreement. Wednesday's turned up lips grew larger in satisfaction. His behaviour really did amuse her. "If it makes you feel any better, I really do find your laugh warming." She insisted.

"Yeah, well.... Whatever." He muttered as he pulled the zip around his bag, sealing it shut.

"I like how stubborn you are too." She murmurs, shuffling a little closer to him so that she is gripping onto his arm. "You give me a run for my money on that factor." She admitted. "And I know I don't make things easy for you but you're always so patient with me- you know when I'm comfortable and when I'm not." She continued to caress his arm, sometimes tracing circles, sometimes tapping a beat. "I adore how you are so passionate about the things you like. I quite enjoy the silly little jokes you tell, even when you repeat the ones you forgot you already told." Wednesday found herself in full oral ramble as she began listing things she appreciated about Y/N. As she went on, Y/N seemed to relax a little bit. "I love how you will look after me when I'm sick and yet refuse to let me take care of you when you're sick." Y/N added.

Although it wasn't audible, she swore she could feel a small snort as hid body shifted briefly. "That's because I can take care of myself and you're completely useless at sympathising with people." He blurted out.

She took a sharp breath in as if feigning being hurt. "Ouch... I am truly hurt..." She whispered sarcastically, to which he laughed lightly. Hee manoeuvred his broad frame to face her. She removed her grip from his arm. "Why do you want to know why I like you anyway?"

After merely shrugging his shoulders, Wednesday furrowed her brows. "It should probably be me asking why- not you." She murmured. "I ask you to do so many things and I know I can be... Hard work," she started.

"You got that right..." He murmured.

Wednesday gave a small glare with her glacier eyes before continuing. "You do so much for me and don't even complain." She finished. Her disposition quickly became one of guilt.

A sad smile grew on his face after observing her shift in emotion. "And so what?" He asked, although rhetorically. "I'm fairly certain I'm the luckiest guy in the world, to be able to be with you."

She rolled her eyes. "Yeah, right... Ajax is the luckiest, you just need to look at Enid... She's so-"

"Pretty? Energetic? Positive?" Y/N cut her off by finishing her sentence. "Sure, maybe she is. But guess what, Wednesday Addams? You're more beautiful than any girl I've ever seen." He states, a finger poking her shoulder with each vigorous word. For once, it was her turn to go scarlet in the cheeks. She seemed to bite on her bottom lip before burying her face into the crook of his neck. Out of natural response, he wrapped his arms around her midriff. He could feel her lips curling up against the skin on his neck. "I really do like you, Wends'." He murmured, his arms tightening around her waist as he let his eyes shut. She burrowed her head further into his neck, a number of dark loose flowing hairs falling over his face. He grinned while his heart burned- thousands of pins stabbed into the muscles that pumped red blood around his body- knives cut at the insides of his lungs and a fire was set in the very pit in his stomach. A nervous energy set in. "Y'know what?"

"What?" She responded quietly.

A silence took over- it wasn't for long but to Y/N, it felt like forever. His lips twitched as he pushed out his words. "I think I love you." Y/N admitted. His voice grew strong and true and honest. "Like- really love you."

Wednesday lifted her head up as she looked at him. "Really?" She questioned timidly. He responded with a nod of his head. Wednesday's smile grew wide as she seemed to tear up a little. Y/N pushed his head forward and gently pressed his lips to hers pale ones for a moment before slowly pulling away.

"Really." He answered.

"Te amo, mi amor" She whispered. Her voice was not cold. Her voice wasn't harsh. It was warm and so was her gaze- and her smile. She pushed herself into the tips of her toes and placed a kiss on his cheek.
