Chapter 39: Sign [Wednesday x Male Reader]

Wednesday (One Shots and Imagines)Words: 12542

Y/N played with the loose, dangling leather threads of his bracelet in his palm- a bracelet covered in silver chainage and heavy metal charms that were engraved with deep trenchlike symbols he did not understand. Wednesday had one too. Growing increasingly possessive of Y/N, It had been her own idea to get matching bracelets to show that they belonged to one another- she said it would be their way of making a promise of lifelong companionship to one another. Of course, Y/N didn't complain- as far as he was concerned, Wednesday Addams was the girl of his very dreams... or rather nightmares- but the point remained the same- he adored the pale girl with all his warm heart.

The leather ends had become frayed and were beginning split and the metal itself was becoming verdant through him constantly wearing it on his wrist- and their relationship was much the same- wearing thin, turning green and sour with arguments and empty threats. Even when he tried to repair the bracelet himself by gluing the split ends and scrubbing the metal clean of growing rust, the damage only seemed to usurp and take over.

It had been over two days since he had last spent time with Wednesday, besides being in the same class as her- and it was something of an anomaly for them to spend so much time apart. If they weren't lounging around together on a bed, they would be playing their instruments together- or they would take up a new activity like taking a dip in the lake or forage for wild and rare foliage. He missed her- sorely.

With one strap of his bag slung over his shoulder, he headed for the table he and Wednesday usually sat together at. Just like the previous Friday, she still took her place at the bench and he sat beside her, placing his backpack down at his feet.

"Afternoon." Wednesday greeted- choosing not to avert her eyes in his direction while she ate, rather instead she pondered down at her reddened pasta. Y/N's eyes also lay on the container of food and he noted that it remained relatively full.

"Not hungry?" He questioned before turning and leaning down to his bag, pulling out a tinfoil mass which he set down in front of himself. Zipping his bag back shut again, he sat up straight and began prying the tinfoil apart, revealing a sandwich made of sourdough.

Wednesday's eyes lingered on his food for a moment before they returned to her own. "Not particularly, no." She answered shortly. "I actually feel rather uneasy." She added.

A slight frown grew on Y/N's lips as he looked over at the girls pale features. She was wearing a long face and her skin looked paler than pale- as though she had painted herself with chalk. "Are you alright?" He asked tentatively, his hand slipping to rest at the end of her thigh beneath the rough wooden table.

Her demeanour appeared to relax at his warm touch- she even let a brief curl at her lips appear as she slipped her hand beneath his, taking his hand into her own. The warmth of his skin sent chills up her arm- sending a trail of goosebumps with a brief shiver. Her eyes settled on Y/N's concerned features and eventually met his gaze. "I think I will be fine." She assured before her slight smile evened out.

Leaning over, Y/N's lips met her temple where he left a kiss. "Good." He responded warmly and with a light squeeze of her hand. He redirected his attention to his sandwich which had been cut in half. Using his free hand he brought it to his mouth and took a bite before setting the rest back down on the foil while he chewed. A silence grew over them- like moss and mould on a corpse abandoned in a field. Something felt off- it had felt off for the last couple of weeks since their aimless bickering had begun. It was killing him- he knew that the two had drifted apart a little- he could see it, feel it, even hear it when they spoke in passing between classes. "How come you didn't invite me to your dorm of the weekend like usual?" Y/N questioned quietly after he had swallowed the food in his mouth.

Wednesday's brow perked up for a moment before it fell again. "Enid decided that she wanted to rearrange our furniture together- something about the 'feng shui' feeling off." She explained, her voice also quiet like his. "Besides, I thought you were ignoring me anyway." She added monotonously, her free hand moving the fork in her pasta where she stabbed a few pieces before setting the fork back down.

"I wasn't ignoring you- you were ignoring me." Y/N responded with knitted brows and an uneasy feeling in his stomach.

"I wasn't ignoring you, I'm not that petty." Wednesday shot back quickly.

Y/N scoffed at her remark and shook his head. "Okay, then if you weren't ignoring me, why didn't you speak to me at all over the weakened? You have a phone- a message or two would have been nice to know you were okay." He fired back in return.

Rolling her eyes, she sighed. "Why wouldn't I be okay? Do you think I can't survive without you holding my hand all of the time? How undermining can you be?" She hissed. "And you didn't message me either. Your undermining and a hypocrite." She instantly bit back at her cheek when the poisonous words left her lips- regret filled her sunken heart. She loved Y/N- while it took her a while to come to terms with it, she knew that much for a fact. And while she was aware that arguments were a formality in a natural relationship- and that they were to be expected, she couldn't help but hurt when they did. Really hurt. Like someone had performed open-heart surgery without putting her under.

"I didn't message you because I though you were ignoring me- I was worried that if I'd message you, I'd just piss you off even more." He responded, taking note of how their conversation was just going in circles.

Wednesday huffed and shoved the lid back into her container. "You make it sound as if that's all I do- get angry at you." She spat, dropping her container into her bag. She truly felt that way too- it seemed recently as though, if they dared spend more than five minuets together, they would collapse into argument and heated debate quicker than wildfire can spread. Thankfully, this argument seemed to be a relatively mellow one. "Y'know what- maybe I will ignore you for a while- it seems as though we can't spend time together anymore without going at each others necks." She stated, tearing her hand out of his. There was a resistance stopping her hand from leaving but as she tugged harder, the resistance broke- like a ribbon cut with a pear of scissors.

One after another, a series of hefty metallic chimes sounded. Wednesday crouched down to grab her bag and her eyes settled on the metal beads of Y/N's bracelet, all spread across the harsh floor- and the leather strap sat snapped on the ground too. Her eyes teared up a little as she looked up at Y/N, who was staring intently at the broken pieces- a hurt expression on his face. Wednesday took her hand away from her bag while her arms wrapped tight around her knees. She buried her chin in the nook between her two knees while she struggled to keep the onslaught of tears back.

"This is a sign... isn't it?" She whispered. "T-That's it... we're done..." She carried on. Although, with each word, the more it sounded like a whimper than a statement- like a poached animal waiting to be finished off. While she remained crouched, she rocked her centred weight from heel to toe as she held her legs tighter to her chest.

Y/N tore his eyes off the ruined jewellery as they settled on Wednesday. "Hey-hey, we're not done." He hushed quickly as he threw his legs over the other side of the bench to face her. "No one's done- We're not done." He reiterated- if not to reassure her, then to tell himself.

Wednesday's bottom lip trembled as she shook her head. "But- its broke... our bond is broken. It's a sign." She stated- her eyes once again settling on the bracelet.

Shaking his head once more, Y/N leant down towards her, his hand resting on her arm as he tried to soothe her. "Maybe it is a sign, yeah." He murmured as his free hand reached down to pick up the leather strap- a few charms still hung on thanks to a knot in the material. He held it between his forefinger and thumb. "And maybe the bracelet is broke... but its just a bracelet." He added, turning the bracelet upside down, making the charms fall off from the other side- the metallic clang sounding again as more charms hit the ground, rolling away from them both. He took the remainder of the strap one end in each hand before pulling- tearing the leather in two.

Wednesday gave a look of shock- watching him further dismantle the item she held to high, she wasn't sure if he was defacing her love just to be mean to her. Her chest sank further as a few tears escaped like prison inmates. "Y/N-"

Y/N dropped off the bench and met her at her own level, also crouching down and putting his arms around his legs. "Love doesn't just happen because you wear a bracelet on your wrist." He spoke, cutting her off. He rocked off of the soles of his feet and onto his rear, sitting down. "I think the issue is... we're both so stressed about the future we want together that we've become blind to one another in the now." He spouted- like a moment of clarity washed over him after seeing Wednesday in such distress. He watched as her eyes met his gaze. "You know what I want to do, mi amor?" He asked, his voice soft and warm as he held his hand out to her.

She glanced down at his hand and then back up into his eyes. She shook her head. "No..." She muttered before slipping her hand into his. Just feeling his touch again soothed her enough to stop rocking on her feet- and this time she promised herself that she wouldn't tear her hand away.

"I want to believe that we will do all of the things we want to when were older, together. Have kids... get eloped... find a decrepit old home for us to burrow in. Regardless of what happens between now and then- I'm always going to love you. Whether you get hurt- or I get hurt- or if we hurt each other or someone else- I want to hold you in my arms through all of it. I want to hope- I want to believe that we can get better- that I can get better and not make you sad, or annoyed, or upset. To believe in one another is to be alive and if we cant believe in each other then I don't think there's much point to being alive."

Wednesday's face morphs to something between a look of pure inspiration and a desperate look to be held. She nods her head as she takes deep breaths to regain some form of composure- her lips settle somewhere between a fearful adrenalin fuelled tremble and a sneaking smile.

"Hey- if we can do that... then nothing with break us apart, got it?" He asked. Wednesday nods her head as she finds herself being pulled into Y/N's arms and into his lap. As if on impact, Wednesday let go of the pent up tears while Y/N held her close and near- his hand rubbing her back as she let out quiet sobs.

The pair sat like that for a good ten minutes- at least until the end of the lunch period. Wednesday cooled her breathing as she looked up at Y/N. He placed a gentle kiss on her lips, no longer than a second of contact before he gave a slight smile. "What do you say we bunk the next couple of lessons- just spend some alone time?" He asked quietly.

Wednesday smiled and nodded her head slowly, wiping her eyes dry of tears. "I-I would like that, mi príncipe..." She whispered. She stands up and grabs her bag, sniffling as she does so. Y/N also gets up and brushes himself before grabbing his own bag, hauling it over his shoulders. "Your dorm or mine?" He asked.

"Mine." She answered quietly and with a small smirk. He nodded and smirked back, before walking ahead. Wednesday stalled behind, watching him before looking at the broken bracelet on the floor. "Wait." She spoke bluntly.

Y/N turned to watch her. "You alright?" He asked.

Wednesday merely nodded before tugging her own matching bracelet off her thin wrist, breaking it and sending the beads down to the ground. She tossed what remained in her hand down to the rest of the broken pieces. She drew a deep breath through her nostrils- her shoulders rising and falling before she smiled again. She turned and stalked towards Y/N, taking his hand in stride as the pair walked shoulder to shoulder.

"Hey, Wends'?"

"Yes?"

"When we get to your room... can we share your pasta? I left my sandwich at the table..." He trailed. Wednesday looked up at him through her brows- glaring intently before huffing. "Thanks, darling. I love you." He spoke, taking her silence as agreement.
