Jo's POV

Rory tried convincing Jess to go to the carnival. He refused until Clara asked Rory and I to join her and Dean.

"Are Jess and Jo your real names?" Clara asks

"Yes," Jess says.

"Well, Josephine," I reply.

"Do you like them?" she asks.

"I love my name," I tell her

"It's fine," he replies, annoyed.

This is funny.

"Would you rather be named Bill?" she asks.

"No," he says.

She asks about a few more names.

"Does this belong to you?" he turns, looking at Dean.

"Clara, you want a snow cone?" Dean asks her.

"Yes. Will you go get me a snow cone?" she asks Jess.

"Absolutely! Go stand in the middle of the street and wait for me, I'll be right back," he says walking away.

"I'll go get your snow cone," Dean says.

"And one for Rory and Jo too," she says.

"And one for Rory and Jo too," Dean repeats.

"Thanks," "Thank you," Rory and I say at the same time.

We walk up to Jess, and Clara continues with her questions for him.

"Do you wash your hair?" she asks.

"Yes, I wash my hair," Jess states.

"Then why does it stick up like that?" she asks.

"Because," he responds.

"It looks crazy," she says.

"Hi, Lane," I say.

"Hey! How's the fundraiser going?" Rory asks her.

"The turn out looks good," I tell her.

"The turn out is great. Apparently, people are starved for entertainment around here," Lane says.

"Well, hurrah for bad cable reception," Rory says.

"So, I'm sorry, but did I see you with Jess and Dean, or do I need a new prescription?" Lane asks.

"Your prescription is fine," Rory says.

"So, explain," Lane says.

"Tomorrow at Luke's. We need to get back before there's a more exciting ending to the evening," Rory says.

"Forget nothing," Lane says.

"I promise," Rory replies.

"I'll be sure of it," I add.

We walk away and find Jess and Clara at the bottle toss booth. Jess is throwing balls and each one misses.

"You missed. You missed," Clara keeps saying every time.

"Hey, you wanna learn how to fly?" He asks her.

"How's everybody doing?" Rory asks, keeping Jess from killing Clara.

"Jess can't throw," she states.

"I can too," he defends.

"You missed every time," she shoots back.

"You can throw, just can't aim," I say.

"I can't concentrate with your annoying voice yammering on and on. It's like having Stuart Little shoved in my ear," he says.

"Here. They only had cherry," Dean says, handing the three of us snow cones.

"Oh, that's all we need," Rory says.

"Cherry is my favorite," I say.

"So, you play any games yet?" he asks Clara.

"No. I've been watching him lose. You don't get a bear, but it's still pretty fun," she says.

"Well, how about I go beat you at ice bowling?" he asks her.

"You can't beat me," she states.

"Oh, I think I can," he replies.

"Let's go!" she says running off.

"We'll be back," he says, following her.

"How much to play?" Rory asks.

"A dollar," Jess replies.

"Okay," she says.

"I got it," he says, paying for her.

"Just for the record, I'm a girl, and we're supposed to throw like this," she says, before giving an awful toss.

"Anything you want to tell me?" he asks her. He looks angry.

"I like your crazy hair," she states, looking at him.

"You weren't just gonna go to the carnival with Dean?" he asks.

"No. Running into them was a total coincidence, and I had Jo to go with. I swear," Rory replies.

"Okay," he says.

I don't think he's convinced. She takes her second ball and throws it.

"Not even close," she says, and we both smile.

"So, when did you and Dean get so buddy-buddy again," he asks, directed at her, but I also answer.

"We're not so buddy-buddy," she says.

"Last time I checked you weren't even speaking. Now he's fetching you snow cones?" Jess asks.

"He was getting one for Clara and she asked him to get them for us," I say.

"You guys talking?" he asks her.

"No, we're not talking. We talked-- once," she says.

"You've got my interest," he says.

Rory explained herself, and Jess didn't seem to be accepting her answers.

"Jess, he knows we're together. Okay? And it's a small town. Dean and I will see each other. I just thought it wouldn't hurt to be polite," she says.

"So you're just being polite?" he questions.

"Yes. Dean has never done anything bad to me, and I want to-"

"I got it," he cuts her off.

"You're mad," she says.

"Nope. Just figured you could've told me," he says.

"I'm sorry."

"No biggy. You gonna throw that?" he asks, handing her her last ball.

"You're really not mad?" she asks.

"Nope. Really not mad at all," he replies.

He is definitely mad.

"And you understand?" she asks.

"I understand," he says.

He's lying.

"You believe me?" she asks.

"Like you were standing with an ax next to a cherry tree," he says.

"And you're okay with it?" she asks.

"Will you just throw the ball?" he asks.

She takes the ball and throws it, knocking all the bottles over.

"Oh, my god! I did it!" she cheers.

"Very impressive," he says.

The guy congratulates her and hands her a bear.

"Thanks. Hello, sad, pathetic bear," she says.

"You know I could've bought you that a quarter," Jess says.

"It's better that I won it. Maybe Clara would like it," she says.

"Yes... shoved in her mouth," he replies.

"She's cute," Rory defends.

"Oh, just darling," he says sarcastically.

Soon I head home, and to bed.
