Chapter 58 Agnes had always believed that she was in love with Elton.
They were old pals, with a deep connection spanning a decade.
But at this moment, Agnes couldnât bring herself to say it. After a beat of silence, she said, âIâm not sure...â
Something seemed to die in Eltonâs eyes. âIs it because of Jared?â
Agnes admitted, âYes, Elton. We canât go back to how things were. You should forget about me and start anewâ
Ellon turned his back on her.
Agnes watched as his shoulders shook slightly and his fists clenched.
Agnes felt like her heart was being ripped out, and tears began to slide down her cheeks.
Iâm sorry, Elton,â Agnes said.
Choking back tears, Elton responded, âAgnes, you deserve to be happy. Goodbye.â
Elton walked away, his figure growing smaller and smaller in the distance.
As she watched him go, Agnes felt like the boy sheâd poured ten years of her heart into was slowly fading from her life.
In those ten years, theyâd had fights and breakups, but Agnes knew that this time, it was the real deal.
Agnes cried a river, sobbing alone in the darkness of the night.
Agnes didnât know how long sheâd been crying until she heard Jaredâs voice.
âAgnes,â Jared said. âSeeing you this heartbroken... Well, it makes a regular guy like me kind of jealous.â
Agnes looked up with tears in her eyes as Jared handed her a handkerchief.
She took it, wiped away her tears, and then looked down again.
âI know you two had something special, Jared said. âBut breakups are part of growing up. You met the right guy at the wrong time. Itâs a mistake that needs fixing. And thatâs where I come in.â
Agnes stopped crying; her eyes were filled with doubt. âHow do you know youâre the right guy?â
âBecause I wonât make you cry,â Jared said.
He paused for a moment and then added, âUnless weâre in bed.â
Agnes was caught off guard. When she realized what heâd said, her face turned red, and she tried to hit him.
She was already so upset, and he was joking around.
But Jaredâs joke did manage to lighten Agnesâs mood.
Jared was right. Breakups were a part of growing up. Just like when her mom passed away. Just like when Elton disappeared from her life. She still had to keep moving forward.
Once Agnes had fully calmed down, she asked, âHow did you find out about Jennyâs secret and get that voice recording to play at the wedding?â Jared responded, âThat was easy. If she was really pregnant, she shouldâve known that Elton would be more valuable to her than framing you. I just followed that lead and found the answer. The recording didnât really exist; I had it made based on Patrickâs description. As for playing it at the wedding. that was simple too. I hired a hacker to break into the computer system.â
Agnes was shocked. The recording was fake?â
Jared answered, âThe recording may have been fake, but the contents were real. Iâve always said that the best way to deal with someone like Jenny is to give them a taste of their own medicine. Sheâs set you up multiple times. Itâs only fair she gets a taste of her own medicine.â
Jaredâs tone was steady and indifferent when he said this, but it sent chills down Agnesâs spine.
Jared couldâve handled this behind the scenes. But he chose to expose it at Jennyâs engagement party, ensuring that sheâd never be able to recover from the scandal âJared, Agnes said Iâve learned that I canât ever cross you. Youâre ruthless.â
Jared looked at Agnes with a casual glance and said, âAre you scared of me?â
