Charlotte only remembered that at the last moment, Joe held her tightly,
shielding her in his arms.
Then, he emitted a low, muffled groan, and she herself lost consciousness
instantly under the violent impact.
She couldnât tell how much time had passed when Charlotte finally regained
consciousness.
Her first instinct was to reach out and touch Joe. Feeling his pulsing heartbeat
and warm body temperature on his neck, she breathed a long sigh of relief.
Only now did she have the presence of mind to assess their situation.
Enter titleâ¦
They were still in that crevice, but a large rock, blown in by the wind, had
fortuitously covered the crevice, creating an enclosed space where they were
trapped.
Charlotte attempted to move her body, but as expected, she couldnât budge.
Charlotte couldnât help but smile bitterly.
Originally, they had come to rescue someone, but they hadnât expected to become the ones in need of rescue.
She looked at Joe with concern and reached out to pat his face with difficulty.
âJoe?â
She called his name several times in succession, but Joe didnât respond. A
sinking feeling crept into Charlotteâs heart.
He couldnât be in trouble, could he?
Seeing Joe like this, Charlotte felt a sharp pain in her heart, and at the same
time, a piercing headache struck her brain.
Charlotte buried her head in Joeâs shoulder, her whole body trembling
uncontrollably.
Perhaps her anguished sounds had triggered something in Joe because he
slowly opened his eyes, previously still in a state of unconsciousness.
Seeing Charlotteâs pallid face, he furrowed his brows and asked, âWhatâs
wrong with you?â
âI⦠Iâm fine,â Charlotte gritted her teeth and shook her head. Their situation
was already dire enough; there was no need to burden Joe further.
Joe also realized that something was amiss at this moment. He made an
effort to move but encountered the wound on his back caused by the rockâs
impact, causing him to suck in a breath of cold air.
âAre you injured?â Seeing Joeâs condition, Charlotte forgot her own headache
and immediately looked at him with concern. âIs it serious?â
Joe shook his head.
Although it hurt a lot, everything was within his pain tolerance. It shouldnât
have affected his spine.
He tried to prop up his body, but whether it was due to the injury or the weight
of the rock, no matter how hard he tried, he couldnât lift the stone behind him.
As they exchanged glances, they suddenly burst into laughter.
Despite their extremely dire situation, being trapped together seemed to
alleviate some of their fears.
Just then, the walkie-talkie in Joeâs pocket crackled to life.
They couldnât see the outside conditions at the moment, nor could they move
their bodies. They could only manage to create a small space to allow Charlotte to reach into Joeâs pocket and retrieve the walkie-talkie.
Although it seemed like a simple action, Charlotte struggled with it for nearly
half an hour before successfully pulling out the walkie-talkie.
âMr. and Mrs. Smith?â
The voice on the other end had been calling continuously, and upon hearing Charlotte and Joeâs response, they seemed momentarily taken aback.
Then, a burst of enthusiastic cheering came from the other end of the radio.
âThatâs great! Youâre both alive!â
âWeâre trapped in a crevice by a massive boulder. You might have to rescue
us along with it,â Charlotte said helplessly.
The person on the other end wasnât too surprised. âNo problem, weâll figure
out a way to get there as soon as possible. You both need to hang in there.â
âWhatâs the situation outside?â Joe suddenly inquired.
