With our vocations done being introduced, for the time, we decided to head back to the Fairy Square.
âMaaan, beating Skeletons without even a weapon, Futaba-sanâs like, super strong? No wait, you have some uber Skills right?â
It sounds like a bout of pure-hearted curiosity from Hirano-kun, but we need to be careful responding.
Just before, we didnât expressly reveal out Skill set. But pertaining our techniques and magic, we need to let them know what we can do.
âActually, Futaba-san also doesnât know anything other than the Warriorâs three Novice Skillsâ
I signal Futaba-san with a glance, but well, donât know if she got it, but anyway, leave this one to me, I endeavour to explain in her place.
âEh, you for real?â
âThereâs one called Blessed Body which I think increases her powerâ
âHmm, Blessed Body huhâ[1]
Obviously, Iâm lying. But since weâre going so far as hiding the Berserker part, we canât reveal Berserk Body either. Well, itâs a fact that we still donât know if that one is the one granting power to Futaba-san.
âAnd the other are Foresight and Repelâ
âRepel? You mean she knocks away attacks?â
âYeah, something like that. With the right angle, the enemy can stagger and fall, and it can also work as a counterâ
It could overturn even that Great Frog, so it should blow away any small-tier Monsters. If itâs the Red Dog Boss, it should work, depending on its size.
âBut man, with that Blessed Body thing, she can keep powered up all the time right? Isnât that like, too good? Like, itâs a Rare Skill right?â
âHirano-kunâs not stronger or faster without using Skills?â
âYeah, none of that happens unless Iâm using a Battle Artâ
I see, thatâs why this always active Passive Skill must look convenient.
âBut look, Futaba-san doesnât have any attack moves, so thereâs no real trump card there. If weâre talking about damage, your Break looks much better.â
âLooks like it has its demerits tooâ
The current Futaba-san is reliable, but depending too much on one thing is never good.
âBy the way, Itâs just my guess but Momokawa-kunâs Shaman, it doesnât have any Attack Magic does it?â
Urk, so she went for that⦠I mean, of course she would. Even I think I should be honest here, otherwise we wonât make any progress.
âYeah, my Shaman canât do any attacks. Frankly speaking, itâs pretty weakâ
âUoh, damn dudeâ
Hirano-kun says in plain-to-see dejection. She didnât comment, but Nishiyama-san also has a difficult look.
âMy Blackhair Bind that can restrain the enemy is the most useful one right nowâ
âAnything else?â
âThe next most useful would be Intuition Pharmacy. I can make medications with itâ
âOoh, we finally got a Healing Skill!â
âBut thereâs the bottleneck of materials, and as far as Iâve seen, this area doesnât have a single herb, so you canât count on it muchâ[2]
âHmm, how effective is it?â
âThat I can guarantee. After all, Futaba-san once got a fatal wound, and my treatment worked wondersâ
âFor real, thatâs great bro! We only had that 4-leafer for recovery, it was pretty bad manâ
âYeah, with this, if we fight the Boss and get a bit injured, it should be alrightâ
From their reactions, that 4-leafed clover herb introduced by the Note Circle is hard to find a lot of. At a glance, those planters in the Fairy Garden didnât have any either.
It was the same with the Class Rep team, theyâre having a hard time with recovery measures. On the flip-side, because of that, a Shaman like me can come into play.
âI also have Red Fever that induces a slight fever, and a flimsy Vile Mud Doll among the rest.â
âEh, slight fever? What do you mean?â
âPlease donât askâ
Yeaah, these few Curses wonât help at all in our efforts, so please spare me the questions. More like, please just forget about them.
âFinally, thereâs a Curse called Pain Return, this one, it returns damage to me back to the attacker, so careful not to misfire alrightâ
Otherwise said, donât backstab me, yâhear. My attack power may be zero, but Iâll take out my killer 100% of the time, in a way, itâs the ultimate insurance.
Itâs mostly useless on enemies that gang up like Goma, but itâs great against human allies. Anyone would give preference to their own life. Also, most people arenât likely to use slave-like underlings like Higuchi. Well, even a dumbass like Masaru wonât make the stab if he knows heâll die.
âI-Is that right. That one really is curse-likeâ
âLong as thereâs no attack, it wonât hurt a flyâ
Nishiyama-san backed away a little, so I added the comment. Plainly taking distance like that, in and of itself, kinda hurts.
âAnyway, with this team, we can pretty much take care of the Boss right?â
âStop right there, donât tell me youâre planning to go there now right? We need to plan this out and⦠look, you donât want what happened with Itou-kun happening again right?â
âYeah, I get thatâ
From their conversation, it seems their first time challenging that Boss was a mostly no-plan charge. They did say something about getting in over their heads.
âSo for now, should we have a battle conference?â
âBut like, so first, Momokawa can be on restraining, and the rest is me and Futaba-san hack-and-slashing away at the Boss, with support from Nishiyama. Then, with luck, we cut the legs to stop it moving, and finish with Blast right?â
Hirano-kunâs plan is full of holes, but considering each of our vocations, there isnât really any other arrangement.
âSo what kind of attacks does the Boss do? We need to think of countermeasures tooâ
âDude, itâs just a big dogâ
âBy big dog, he means around the size of a lion you can find in a zoo. Seeing it up close, thereâs a good bit of pressureâ
Lion-size meaning, itâs at least smaller than that memorable first encounter of mine, the Armor Bear⦠But, that doesnât make it any less daunting. A Red Dog big enough to surpass large dog breeds, itâs damn scary.
âAh right, it gets worse, the thing breathes fire manâ
âEh, seriously? Around how much?â
âPretty big, like them fountain fireworks.â[3]
âNo wait you, it was clearly bigger than some fireworks remember?â
âThat, please elaborateâ
âHmm, letâs seeââ
According to Nishiyama-san, though itâs not like a full blown flamethrower, the Boss still lets out intense flames. When thereâs sparks emitted from its clattering fangs, the next moment, flames gush out with great momentum.
Is it shooting fire with magic, or maybe letting out flammable gas and then igniting that, at this point, it doesnât matter.
âIsnât it pretty dangerous for Hirano-kun and Futaba-san whoâre supposed to get close?â
âYeah but, were Swordsman and Warrior, so thereâs no choice right? Weâll be looking out for the sparksâ
Vigilance with focus on evasion. Saying so is great and all, but is that alright? In a game, the Monsters only move according to the AI theyâre programmed with. Especially before big attacks, theyâll do some pre-set behaviour. Thatâs how the player deals with it. If they canât, they can continue over and over again, so even an idiot can do it eventually.
âAnyway, maybe you could douse yourself with water before. Also, my meds can probably handle burns⦠but if itâs too severe, you might be out of luckâ
âGotâcha, Iâll make sure to dodgeâ
Thereâs not a lot of pre-work we can do. In the end, weâre mostly relying on our Player Skills.
âDid we miss anything?â
âHmm, not really, no. That thing moves like it looks, just like a dog. You know, those police dogs chasing after criminals, youâve seen those on TV right? Itâs like that, really fast-paced and allâ
âHonestly, that thereâs the scariest thing. I can barely run away with Quick Step, and Nishiyamaâs far away too. But Itou⦠it was bad. He was knocked down once, and turned into a bloody messâ
âEh, you mean, instant death?â
âNah, he was alive. And, I tried closing in to save him, but by then, it was gonna blow fire, and Itou was in the way, so we couldnât use Attack Magic eitherâ
âAnd in the end, we couldnât do a thing⦠and just ran awayâ
Under those circumstances, plus due to negligence, they lost a comrade and returned utterly defeated. But them making it back without major injury can be considered more than lucky.
âHmm⦠So, that happenedâ¦â
The thought comes to mind, maybe Itou-kun was betrayed by these two. However, from their talking about how helpful a Thief is in dungeon capture, he shouldnât have been someone you can so easily cut away.
As for that Boss battle, I should just look at it like they just lacked the power.
âSo, what do you think? After a break, wanna head to the Boss?â
âNo, Me and Futaba-san want to practice a bit more with Skeletons, so can you guys wait some?â
âThereâs no problem with that, but will you two be alright alone?â
âIf thereâs only Skeletons, weâll be fine. So, letâs go Futaba-sanâ
Saying that half-forcefully, I stand up.
Actually, practice isnât the main reason. The prime objective is, yes, I have things I need to talk about with Futaba-san, alone.
â⦠Futaba-san, youâre pretty cautious of them huh?â
Making sure there arenât any Skeletons inside, we pick and enter a random room, and I say that to break the ice.
âYeah, I think itâs too dangerous to trust other people just yetâ
Even the kind-hearted Futaba-san, with all her cruel experiences to date, spoke words of suspicion towards the two without stammer.
âI think so too. Thatâs why I liedâ
I have no regrets. I was anxious whether theyâd see through it though.
In all likelihood, they could be lying too. Like actually, Nishiyama-san can shoot Aer Sagitta chantless. Or like Hirano-kun has other Battle Arts too.
If itâs secrets, we all have some.
âBy lying, you mean about me?â
âIâm glad you stayed quiet. Kinda thought youâd suddenly go Actually, Iâm a Berserker or somethingâ
âN-No I wouldnât! I can at least read the mood okay!â
Thatâs why she stayed out of most of the conversation I bet. We hadnât considered this situation, and itâd be hard to match our stories. Throwing all the explaining business to me was the right choice for Futaba-san.
We shouldâve have thought about the possibility of sudden encounters like this and decided on a code of action, thatâs my only small regret. Iâm reflecting on it.
âBut I never thought thereâd suddenly be classmates at the jump destinationâ
âWeâll need to be careful next time. Or they could suddenly come attackingâ
Futaba-sanâs vigilance is churning full-throttle. But this level of caution is just right.
âI think you know, but weâll be working together with them for nowâ
â⦠Are you sure?â
âYouâve seen their power. Theyâve got better vocations than me at leastâ
âThatâs not true!â
My slight self-derision replied with such a strong denial, I get a bit surprised. You donât need to deny it so hard.
âAh, s-sorryâ
âNo, itâs fine, I appreciate the pat on the backâ
Well, I guess itâs true that I saved her life once. Iâm glad I was a Shaman instead of some half-baked fighter type, is something say only for that occasion.
âAnyway, those two can at least listen to reason, and making more allies should make it safer in the long run I guessâ
âThatâs, well true⦠but after beating the Boss, theyâll still be with us, rightâ¦?â
âEh, is that a problem?â
On the contrary, after the Boss, if we go, Welp, see ya, itâs even more awkward.
âNot that⦠but, you donât know, when theyâll betray. Like in my caseâ
âAh, y-yeah, youâre rightâ
In my case, it was the matter of Higuchi one-sidedly attacking me, so I have my guard up against that, but getting abandoned when the going gets tough, that kind of pattern isnât something fully engraved in me. I get it technically, but for Futaba-san whoâs actually gone through that kind of betrayal, itâs natural she wonât be able to trust someone just because theyâre a bit friendly.
âIf possible, Iâd like to avoid getting into big trouble though. Anyone will try and save their own skin. They could last-minute betray an ally⦠But on the contrary, if we have smooth progress, thereâs no reason for that to happen. What we need is, rather than a relation of trust, we need enough power to secure safety.â
âSo you mean, from now on, we should try to ally with as many classmates as we can right?â
âYeah, but not Higuchi though. Iâll Curse those guys to hell!â
Fufun, I laugh half joking, half serious.
âYep, you can do it Momokawa-kunâ
But if you give me a gentle, full smile agreement to that, I get a feeling much complicated. More so, since Futaba-san has a more, pacifist-like image to her.
âAnyway, we gotta take down that Boss before any of thatâ
âEmm, so weâll, practice?â
âYes. I needed to talk properly with Futaba-san, but the part about wanting to practice is also trueâ
The Skeleton is truly a convenient practice partner. Before entering this area, what Monster, at what timing, how many, we didnât know a thing. It was all a per-encounter basis, so the best we could do, was avoiding fights we could avoid.
But here, we can fight Skeletons in peace. Open space, known enemy, low numbers. It could be that, after leaving here, weâll never get to such a beginner friendly area.
âI want to see if I can get a little more out of Blackhair and Mud Doll. Futaba-san too, isnât it better if you get more confidence in your Repel and Foresight?â
âYeah, thatâs true Momokawa-kun. Iâll, try them out!â
Thus, our leveling began. [4]

[2] I guess he means the area outside the Fairy Square.
[3] Hereâs a Video. It actually says Dragon Fireworks but in English itâs fountain I guessâ¦
