The Beta, as I've decided to call him, walked the long route where he reached the Vitali base. I allowed my eyes to wander and document the number of men I saw posted by the door. When Beta whispered the password I attempted to interpret what he had said - well whispered. It sounded something like 'Massachusetts' which I found odd since the Vitali family were Italian, so wouldn't that mean that the password was an Italian word? Apparently not.
We went through many tunnels, too many for my liking and my aching memory. We turned several rights and lefts before we stopped in front of a door. There was a keypad near the door where Beta was quickly typing away the passcode. I tried to peek but he hid it well.
We entered a large room that looked like an assembly hall from high school, I assumed we would stop in there but we didn't. We practically walked through a wall, or I thought we did. We stopped at the door and I watched as Beta knocked harshly on the door. Four times to be precise.
I heard a sharp 'come in' from the inside of the room before Beta grabbed me by the scruff of my neck and practically tossed me in the room like I was some damn animal.
"What do you bring me, Dantè?" Vinchenzo asked looking at me from his mahogany desk.
"Her boyfriend was chasing her down the street and was trying to murder her. She ran right into Vitali lands." The beta who I knew as Dantè said as he looked at me spitefully.
"What's your name?" Vinchenzo asked finally leaning back in his seat, his green eyes practically seeing my soul.
"Stephanie," I muttered sticking to the name I gave Dantè earlier on.
Vinchenzo looked suspicious which scared me and I began to pray that he wouldn't recognize from somewhere.
"Ah, I see," He said, "And Stephanie," He said gritting his teeth emphasizing my fake name, "Do you perhaps happen to not have a surname?" He said looking at me.
"I do," I nodded, "It's Suter,"
"Of course, Stephanie Suter." Vinchenzo muttered, "Can you explain to me why you are here?" He asked eyeing me.
"My boyfriend... he thought I was cheating on him and he punched me in the stomach. I kneed him and made a run for it and he began to chase me with his gun," I said and forced my waterworks to make an appearance, "He kept on yelling that he... he would kill me! I was so scared and I didn't know where I was!" I said crocodile tears falling down my face.
"Okay, do you know who we are?" Vinchenzo asked.
I shook my head, "No."
"Good." He said to me and then looked at Dantè, "We have issues to deal with down below. Take all of your men I'll meet you after I deal with Miss Suter here."
Dantè looked horrified as he looked between me and Vinchenzo.
"Go!" Vinchenzo commanded.
"But-" Dantè began.
"Basta!" Vinchenzo yelled slamming both of his fists down on the table, his green eyes turned dark as he faced Dantè who didn't appear to be shaken at all.
[Enough]
"Yes sir," Dantè said finally complying with what Vinchenzo had asked of him earlier.
When the men vacated the room, Vinchenzo turned his attention to me and smirked.
"Well Savannah Suter," He began.
"It's Stephanie," I immediately corrected him.
"Lo so, mia cara." Vinchenzo grinned.
[I know, my dear.]
"What?" I asked, "I don't speak Italian." I added.
"How do you know it's Italian?" He questioned smugly.
"I tried to learn it in high school," I lied.
"Ah of course." Vinchenzo replied, "I assume you know what I said."
"No, I don't." I shook my head.
"Didn't you just say you tried to learn Italian in high school?" He asked me.
I nodded, "I did. I dropped out a week later and took another elective." I shrugged.
"Interesting."
I remained silent and watched as Vinchenzo drummed his slender fingers against his desk, it seemed to be rhythmical. I looked at him... like really looked at him and realized he was very attractive. His glossy raven black hair looked messy as though he had run his hands through it several times and his green eyes were quite bright in the light, they matched the deep green colour of grass. His pink lips looked soft, they were parted slightly and Vinchenzo appeared to be very deep in thought.
"Stephanie I think the best thing to do is hold you hostage." He admitted.
"What?" I shrieked.
"I'm keeping you here hostage." He said again, "You've already seen too much and I can't guarantee that you'll keep your mouth shut when you reach up there." He said.
"I... what about my family, Vinchenzo?" I asked him.
"Mr Vitali to you, Stephanie. Would you prefer we told them you are dead or allow them to think you're missing?" Vinchenzo asked me.
That was a tough decision. If he told them I was dead, that would leave them no hope. If we allowed them to think that I was missing then they'd be able to have that flicker of hope for me coming back home. That's if Vinchenzo or his 'family' don't shoot me first. I guess, them assuming I'm missing would be better.
"Missing," I finally chose my voice sounded quite croaky.
"Perfect. I'll arrange it." He smirked.
"What will I do down here?"
"I'll see to that, Stephanie." Vinchenzo smiled sadistically. I shuddered under his gaze, "How do you feel about being a chambermaid?" He asked.
I grimaced, I wasn't trained to clean anything, I was a stealth operative, I was an agent that worked for the FBI for Pete's sake. Yet, here I was lowering myself down to make the world a safer place for the generations to come after me.
"I don't have much of a choice, do I?" I replied dryly.
Vinchenzo chuckled darkly, "No, mia cara you don't."
[My dear]
I sighed and remained on the ground awaiting his orders. Vinchenzo pulled out a cigarette and lit it before he sucked in a long drag before he slowly released the smoke out of his nostrils making me cough and sputter. The horrible smell made me feel nauseous as I tried to wave my hand in front of my nose, my lungs practically begging for fresh oxygen.
Vinchenzo sighed and he sucked his cigarette some more before he suddenly slammed his fist against the desk tossing his cigarette - still lit - to the rug next to me. I gasped, "It's going to burn the house down!"
Vinchenzo chuckled as he pushed the cigarette further into the rug near me. The smell of a small fire igniting made me gasp with fear. It made me realize that this man was totally off his rocker and that he needed mental help as soon as possible.
I suddenly remembered why I had gotten myself into this position and began to study the office - it looked normal to the outsider with the exception of having zero windows - there was a large bookcase stacked to the brim all in Italian allowing me to identify nothing.
There was a minibar that had many alcoholic beverages sitting on top of the counter, a bulky man was stationed there and he seemed rather stoic yet bored at the same time. The man was studying me with such intensity that it kind of made me want to crawl under Vinchenzo's desk and hide. The man was absolutely terrifying, he had a long scar that ran down his face, he had a messy mop of dark hair and all the visible skin had ink splashed all over it.
His intense Nutella brown eyes stared at me, studying and analyzing as if trying to reach into my soul. I began to pray that he wouldn't notice that I was an agent for if he did I was going to be dead meat and no longer in a position to be able to continue my mission.
I looked up to see Vinchenzo picking up the squashed cigarette in his hand and simply tossing it to the man by the bar. He caught it with such ease and didn't even flinch as if the scalding heat didn't burn or bother him in the slightest.
"Trash it," Vinchenzo commanded, authority ringing in his voice.
"Non ti preoccupare,"
[Don't worry about it]
Suddenly a loud knock was heard. Vinchenzo glanced at his watch and then at the door as though contemplating his answer.
"Dante, sei tu?" Vinchezo called.
[Is that you]
"Si," Dante responded gruffly.
[Yes]
"Accedere!" Vinchenzo called reclining at his desk again.
[Come in]
Dantè entered the room his arms filled with bloodstains, his hair matted with sweat and his piercing eyes lethal.
"Allora?"
[Well?]
"We killed him. Good for nothing. Didn't share anything!" Dante groaned using short sentences that didn't even make it to be classified as a simple sentence.
"Lasciarlo da solo, we will catch another one," Vinchenzo said.
[Leave it alone]
"Lo so, Vinchenzo."
[I know]
Vinchenzo looked at me before he sighed and rolled his eyes.
"Alzarsi! Velocemente!"He yelled.
[Get up! Quickly!]
"What did you say?" I asked him calmly.
"Move." He grunted out.
