Chapter 8: 06 | Cambria

Devaun and I went to class together after dropping Farrah off. I bit the insides of my cheek when I saw people staring at the two of us when we walked in the room.

There wasn't a seating arrangement assigned, so I quickly rushed to the nearest seat and ignore the attention I was slightly getting. I tried to act normal and played with my hair.

"What's wrong?" Dev asked in concern as he sat on the seat beside me.

I crooked a smile. "Nothing is wrong."

"You sure?"

I nodded.

He gave me a reluctant look before leaving me be. The warning bell was going off when my teacher came waltzing in the room and said good morning in Spanish and then class started.

The class erupted into cries and whines when Mr. Fernandez decided that he will have a quiz fifteen minutes before the class ends.

I frowned deeply. He just discussed the lesson today, and now he's giving us a quiz?! At least he was considerate enough to give us time to study before the quiz. But still not fair!

"Uhm, Bri . . ." I hear Dev beside me.

I turned to him to know what he wanted. "Yes, Dev?"

"C-Can you clarify the lesson for me?" He asked shyly. "I'm confused with a lot of things."

I smiled inwardly, nodding my head. "Alright, which part are you having trouble with?"

He beamed me a smile and pulled his chair closer to me. I tried my best to explain everything to him in a short time. I found it endearing that he was so focused.

He looked cute, actually.

Him pushing his hair back with his fingers every now and then. Letting out a sound of triumph when he understood. He raised his hand for a high five when we were done.

"Thanks for this, Bri." Dev rejoiced. "You're saving my ass from failing."

I softly laughed. "Anytime."

"I might take your offer on that." He said, throwing a wink in my direction before turning away.

I sat there stunned in my seat, slightly freaking out. I can't believe he just winked at me. Shaking my thoughts away, I brought my fist to my mouth to hide my threatening smile.

After sending my dad a quick message, I knocked on Mrs. Hill's front door. It was one of those days again where I tutor Peter, her twelve-year-old son, on his Spanish subject.

"Hey, Mrs. Hill." I greeted once she opened the door.

Her smile reaches her eyes. "Hello, Cambria. Come in, come in. Peter arrived from school not long ago. He has a friend over, so I hope you don't mind."

I stepped inside the house and slipped out of my shoes and placed them on the side. "No, not at all."

Mrs. Hill showed me to the living room where two boys were sitted on the couch with their school things surrounding them.

"Will, Cambria is here."

The boys turned to our direction and smiled boredly. Typical reaction I usually get when I arrive. I'm immune to it. I noticed that they were both holding a piece of paper.

I placed my bag on the floor and sat on the couch. We usually have the tutoring sessions in the dinning room, but since Will has a friend over I guess we'll be staying here for today.

"Bri, we have a thing in Spanish class where we have to memorize a speech and present it in front of the class." Will informed me in a worried tone. "It's by pair. Oscar's my partner." He pointed over the curly haired boy.

I borrowed the paper from them to take a look at it. I hummed. I remember having something similar to this back in middle school, too. Although, they're lucky because they get to have a pair while we did it individually. Talk about the unfair treatment.

There were some small annotations on the paper. Written across it were their names indicating their prospective lines.

"Okay, walk me through what you got at the moment." I expressed, gesturing to go on.

I kept a straight face while they were reading their speech. Dios mio, the pronunciation of the words . . . it was like they were trying to kill it. I can feel my ancestors cringing in the afterlife.

A sigh of relief left me when they finished off with the last stanza. Help is clearly needed. And I mean, they need a big help. They had faced a few difficulties with pronouncing some of the words, so I decided to go with helping with that first then we will move on to the next step.

In between the session, Mrs. Hill came in to serve some drinks and snacks. I was very thankful for the snacks because my sugar was running low and I was starting to get tired.

Will and Oscar made progress, not a lot of it, but we're getting there in small steps. They did keep on complaining because when they make a mistake, I make them do it again from the top. We weren't getting that far, believe me.

I decided to call it a day. The boys both rejoiced in unison, throwing themselves on the couch. I laughed. I'm as glad as them that I can finally go home. When I was just about to leave, the doorbell rang. I saw Mrs. Hill walking pass by to answer the door.

"Oscar," Mrs. Hill's voice ran through the room. "Your brother is here to pick you up."

Oscar jumped up and started packing his things in light speed. I went ahead to bid goodbye to the buys and made my way to the front door to put on my shoes so I can leave.

While I was kneeling on the floor putting on my shoes, I turned my head up to glance at Mrs. Hill standing by the front door talking to whom I assume was Oscar's brother. I couldn't see him though since Mrs. Hill was blocking him. Without thinking much about it, I finished putting on my shoes and approached Mrs. Hill.

"I'm done for today-" I began but words left my mouth when I saw who was standing outside. "Devaun?"

He looked shocked to see me. "Bri, what are you doing here?"

"I tutor Will twice a week." I answered.

"You two know each other?" Mrs. Hill piped in.

Dev nodded his head. "We have a few classes together."

Our heads turned back when we hear Oscar shouting for Dev and throwing his backpack for him to catch. Dev barely had time to process what was going on before catching Oscar's bag like it was a muscle memory.

While gazing at the brothers, my brows furrowed a little noticing that they don't look quite similar. They didn't share any similar features or anything. I was curious and wanted to ask questions, but that wouldn't be right.

I snapped out of my thoughts when Mrs. Hill tapped me on the shoulder and handing me my payment for today. I smiled amd thanked her before stepping out of the house.

"Where do you live?" Dev asked me, adjusting the hold of the bag. "Maybe we can walk you there if you want."

The thought of him walking me home made me feel somewhat giddy inside, but I regarded his little brother who was yawning beside him and thought it was best to go on our separate ways so everyone can rest.

"I live a few blocks from here." I pointed behind me with the use of my thumb. "So it's fine, you don't need to walk me home."

In a flicker, I saw his mouth form into a frown before it was gone. "Okay, alright then."

"Maybe next time?" The words came out of my mouth without warning.

"Yeah, I can totally walk you home next time." Dev beamed that boyish smile at me, his eyes gleaming. "Well I'll see you at school tomorrow then." He walked ahead with his brother but not before wrinkling his nose in a cute way that got me thinking of it all night.
