LILLIAN
Lillian felt a pang of sadness as her vacation came to an end. Itâs normal to feel a bit blue when the freedom of a holiday is over and reality sets in. But for Lillian, there was an extra layer to her melancholy.
This had been the best vacation sheâd had in years, and she hadnât expected to enjoy it so much, especially not with Noah. All she had wanted was some rest and a bit of boredom. But since Noah showed up, sheâd had neither rest nor boredom.
And the surprising part was, she didnât mind it one bit. This was exactly what she needed. Noah was the best lover sheâd ever had, but that wasnât the only thing that mattered.
Even without the sex, she would have been content. But she had to admit, the sex was a huge plus. They talked, they laughed, they did all the things couplesâand friendsâdo.
It was nice. It felt like a honeymoon. In fact, it felt a lot like a honeymoon.
Noah even made her breakfast once. It wasnât anything fancy. His cooking skills were practically nonexistent, but it was a sweet and unexpected gesture from him.
She told him how much she appreciated it, and he said he didnât mind spoiling his summer fling. It made sense, and she found that she liked their arrangement. If half her relationships were like this, sheâd be a happy woman.
But real relationships arenât like that. Routine sets in, differences become more apparent, and the best you can hope for is a friendly breakup because both parties are bored. The worst-case scenario involves constant fights, bitterness, or even abuse.
Thankfully, sheâd never experienced the latter. She considered herself lucky to have never encountered an abusive partner. Sheâd met a few jerks, but no more than any other woman.
She wasnât in a rush to find someone good. She wasnât even thirty yet. While spending time with Noah, she thought that their situation was close to ideal.
They got the best of each other without the complications of a full-time relationship. They would part ways before they had the chance to grow tired of each other, and they would never have to see each otherâs worst sides. Sheâd seen some of Noahâs flaws while working for him, and she found that they didnât bother her.
Sheâd never had this much fun with anyone before, and something told her she wouldnât with anyone else. Not because she had deep feelings for Noah, but because she didnât. This kind of relationship offered a different kind of freedom.
No drama. No deep emotions. Just carefree fun and a good time.
âWhat are you thinking about?â Noah asked, kissing her shoulder.
They were sprawled out on a large couch in the villaâs game room. She would miss this. Not the game room itself, but the choice.
They could choose a different room to have sex in every day, or even multiple times a day. They hadnât done it in the garden; that would have been too risky. But she didnât dare suggest it, because she knew Noah would be all for it.
âDo you really want to know?â she shot back.
âOnly if itâs about me.â
âItâs not.â
âThen no.â
âYouâre such a jerk,â she laughed.
âYou think?â he teased, pressing his erection against her lower back.
She rolled her eyes, but he couldnât see since her back was to him.
âYou know, having an erection all the time could be a problem at your age,â she teased. âAre you sure you didnât take a pill to help you out?â
âItâs not dead, and I donât need a pillâ¦â
âWhen youâre with me?â
âWhoâs conceited now?â he laughed.
She shot him a look over her shoulder and stuck her tongue out at him, making him laugh even harder.
âI donât need them, period,â he finally said. âNot yet, at least.â
âThatâs good for you.â
âAnd for you.â
âYou mean for the next two days weâll be having sex?â she snorted.
âWell, yes. Donât tell me youâll miss me?â
âIâll miss the good sex for sure, and Iâm not looking forward to seeing Tamaraâs face every day.â
âIâve told you before, sheâs not that bad,â he sighed, kissing her shoulder.
âDonât let your dick be the judge of character,â she retorted, pulling away from him slightly.
âFeeling a little green?â he teased, pulling her back into his arms.
âHardly,â she retorted. âI just donât care for her, and the feeling is mutual. Itâs not uncommon, Noah. Most people arenât exactly fond of their bosses.â
He nodded, understanding. âI can relate to that. But have you ever considered leaving, given your dissatisfaction?â
She sighed. âIâve thought about it, sure. But I feel stable there. The pay is decent, and Iâm good at my job. Itâs not exactly my dream job, but even our long-term clients have gotten used to me. They donât give me a hard time anymore.â
She felt him pull away, and she turned to face him. He sat up, running his fingers through his hair, a troubled look on his face. She watched him, curious. What was bothering him?
âMaybe you should start looking for something else,â he suggested.
âI might,â she said, frowning. âBut why the sudden seriousness?â
He hesitated, which was unusual. âI didnât intend to tell you this, but I made a deal for you before I left,â he admitted slowly.
âNo, you didnât,â she laughed, not quite believing what he was implying.
âFive years,â he said simply.
âNoah,â she admonished.
So that was why she hadnât been fired. It wasnât because Asher Ryder was particularly lenient or because he wanted her in his company. It was because he had promised his brother to keep her.
The realization hit her hard, but at least now she understood why Tamara couldnât get rid of her.
âI know Tamara. She canât stand you, Lillian. She wouldnât care about your abilities, and she wouldnât give you the chance I was forced to give you. So, I made sure she couldnât fire you on sight,â he explained.
âSeriously?â she groaned, rubbing her eyes. âWhy? Why would you do that?â
âIâm not sure,â he shrugged. âMaybe I softened up before I left, or maybe I thought you were a good assistant and didnât deserve to be fired just because of your looks. It didnât seem fair.â
âWas it because I didnât put up with your crap?â she asked.
âI think that had something to do with it, yes.â
âYou didnât have to do that.â
âI know. But I donât often do nice things for people, and you never asked for anything except a raise on your first day.â
âSecond day,â she corrected. âAfter you rehired me. But why should I have asked for anything?â
âBecause thatâs what I was used to. I had spies in the company keeping tabs on my brother, and I had a spy for the employees too before I left for Europe.â
âAnd?â
âDo you think those people spied for me out of the goodness of their hearts?â he scoffed. âThey wanted something. Better positions, paid vacations, higher salaries⦠You didnât.â
âI wanted a higher salary.â
âYou demanded one. You didnât kiss up to me to get it.â
âTrue, butâ¦â
âNo buts. I did what I did, and thereâs no point in overthinking it.â
âSo, should I thank you now?â she asked sarcastically.
She knew she sounded ungrateful, but this was a lot to take in. They werenât the type to exchange pleasantries.
They had always been straightforward with each other.
âI didnât tell you so you could thank me. I told you because you need to be prepared. Once the time I bought for you runs out, so does your job security.â
âIf she fires me, Iâll get a severance package, right?â she asked.
âWith your current salary, Iâd say it would be quite substantial, yes.â
âThen Iâll let her fire me,â she decided.
âAre you sure?â
âI think I can put up with her for a few more years. If I quit, I get nothing.â
âThatâs a smart move,â he complimented. âThat way, when you find another job, youâll have your new salary plus the severance.â
âExactly. But what about you?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âYou know what I mean,â she said, rolling her eyes. âJust because I dropped the subject when we first talked about it doesnât mean Iâve forgotten. You looked out for me before you left. Donât you think you should do the same for yourself?â
âLillianâ¦â
âNo, really, Noah. After I leave here, I have somewhere to go, even if itâs a job I donât particularly like. What about you?â
âIâll find somewhere else I havenât been yet.â
âAnd for how long?â
He rose from the couch, turning his back to her.
âIâm going to take a shower,â he announced.
She wasnât surprised by his reaction. As he moved to leave, she quickly grabbed his forearm, pulling him back onto the couch.
âHow long?â she pressed.
âDonât push me, Lillian,â he warned, his words gritted out.
She didnât care if he was upset. She was pushing this because their time was running out, and he couldnât dodge the issue forever.
They say the world isnât enough, but after three years of constant travel, heâd probably seen enough to last a lifetime.
âIâm asking a question, and you canât avoid it forever.â
âYouâre leaving the day after tomorrow. Why do you want to end this on a sour note?â
âIt doesnât have to end on a sour note. We can talk about it, like normal people do.â
âI just want to fuck you, okay? Canât we just stick to that?â
âBecause I wonât be used as a painkiller,â she said, her tone flat.
âIn case you forgot, weâre both using each other for the summer,â he shot back. âThat was our agreement.â
âHaving fun is one thing; sweeping things under the rug is another, Noah.â
âWe agreed on no strings attached,â he reminded her.
âAnd Iâm fine with that. But that doesnât mean we canât talk about things. Weâve been doing it already. Itâs the only topic you avoid because it makes you insecure.â
âYou want the truth?â he asked, not waiting for her to respond. âYes, it makes me insecure. Thatâs why I donât want to talk or think about it. I have no idea what Iâm going to do, and after my failure, no big company is going to hire me.â
âDo you want to work for a company again?â
âHell no!â he scoffed. âBut itâs the only thing I know how to do, and Iâm not even good at it. So, what do you want me to say? And itâs not like you know what you want to do either.â
âNo, I donât. But I donât mind talking about it with you.â
She moved closer, wrapping herself around him. It was a tender gesture, and he accepted it, resting his forearms on her calves as she leaned against his back.
She loved the way their bodies connected. She would miss this intimacy, but he didnât need to know that.
âIâm sorry for being snappy,â he murmured. âBut I really donât like this conversation.â
âLike I said, you canât avoid it forever, Noah. Isnât it better to have this conversation here with me, without any pressure?â
âMaybe youâre right.â
âI am. And I have a theory.â
âWhat kind of theory?â
âJust promise you wonât dismiss it outright.â
âWhat crazy idea has popped into your twisted mind?â he asked, chuckling.
She could tell he was more relaxed now. She planted a few kisses on his back.
âAre you trying to get me hard again?â he asked.
âMaybe I am, maybe Iâm not,â she teased, nipping him gently.
âWhat did you want to say?â
âThat maybe youâre not a bad businessman.â
He snorted at that.
âIâm serious.â
âAnd I failed because Iâm so good?â
âYes, you did fail,â she sighed. âYou were bound to. You tried to follow someone elseâs path instead of finding your own.â
âAnd what should that be?â he scoffed.
âI donât know. Thatâs something you have to figure out on your own. Just donât put it off too long. Life wonât wait for you to make up your mind.â
âThe same goes for you.â
âThe same goes for me,â she agreed, kissing the back of his neck.
Then she slid her hand to his front, taking his cock in her hand.
âWhat do you say we put this to good use again?â she asked, her tone playful.
