The sound of a gunshot rang out.
Josie immediately opened her eyes and was startled to see a bullet striking Johnnyâs knife, causing it to fall to the ground. Johnny looked incredulously at the person in the distance.
Dexter, dressed in a black shirt with unrolled sleeves, approached with smooth and confident strides.
He firmly held a gun in his hand, smoke still wafting from the barrel.
He hurriedly approached, finding Josie sitting on the ground in a pitiful state. Tears were still streaming down her cheeks, and she was so aggrieved that she couldnât utter a word.
She didnât care why Dexter had come. She just felt terrified.
Johnny had lost his weapon. He retreated step by step, but he didnât beg for mercy. Instead, he knelt straight down on the ground, understanding that his life was about to be ruined.
âMr. Olsen!â Larry arrived later, so shocked by the scene before him that he was rendered speechless.
Upon seeing Dexter, Mark finally breathed a sigh of relief and slowly closed his eyes.
âDonât fall asleep!â Josie exclaimed.
âGet him to the hospital. Quickly!â Dexter spoke without hesitation.
The bodyguards quickly took hold of the person from Josieâs hands. A people carried him and ran outside, not stopping until they reached the car.
Josie was about to rise and follow, but Dexter raised his hand, pressing her back down and causing her to sit back in her original spot.
She stared at him blankly, momentarily unsure of how she should feel.
Dexter put the gun away and squatted down to meet her gaze. He grasped her frail wrist, which was worn and scarred beyond recognition.
Judging from the situation here, he could tell how much suffering she had endured.
His Adamâs apple bobbed, and after a moment, he finally said, âYouâve been through so much.â
âAll these years.â
Josie wore a blank expression after enduring a tremendous shock.
Morgan had rushed over, crossing a mountain, only to see Mark being carried away. His face changed dramatically as he quickly stepped into the abandoned construction site. To his surprise, he saw the bodyguard detaining a bald man, while in the corner, Josie was sitting there, with Dexter crouching down next to her.
All of Morganâs worries and anxieties had completely vanished, replaced instead by jealousy.
He had arrived late.
But how could this be? When I left, Dexter was still at the scene. How could he have found this place so quickly?
Could it be that he had known all along?
Everything was prepared when they came to the rescue. Larry fetched a medical kit from the car and brought it over. Dexter carefully applied the medicine to her wrist with care and consideration.
The two remained silent.
He carefully and meticulously treated her wrist, wrapping it in gauze. Then, he half-knelt on the ground to attend to the wound on her ankle. It was only then that Josie finally spoke. âWill Mark die?â
Dexter didnât stop what he was doing.
He had just examined Markâs wound on his back. The wound wasnât very deep. It shouldnât be fatal.
âNo. I will summon the best doctor in the entire city to save him.â
âWhat am I supposed to do if he dies?â Josie asked as though she hadnât heard him the first time.
Her eyes were clear as she looked at him blankly. âAm I to bear the burden of another life lost?â
Seeing Josie in such a state caused Dexterâs heart to ache. He said firmly, âI said he wonât die. Iâm here, Leanne.â
The two exchanged glances.
Josie was momentarily stunned, and then a wave of dizziness washed over her. The inhuman torment she had endured these past days finally took its toll, causing her to collapse completely.
âLeanne!â
