Josie was equally surprised. When did he find outâ¦
Upon hearing those words, Johnny gradually let down his guard. He swallowed hard, realizing he shouldnât defy this man. He stepped forward, cutting Josieâs ropes, and then stood guard at the door.
Suddenly, Josie was free from her shackles. Her arms trembled, and for a long while, she was unable to move. She had lost all sensation, unable to feel even pain.
âInstead of attending your daughterâs wedding today, you came to mock me. What is your purpose?â
Mark stared at her pained expression, then his gaze fell on the live broadcast playing on the screen in front of her.
âYouâre a smart person. Iâve felt that way since the moment I first saw you.â
Josie couldnât quite articulate the feeling in her heart. Despite the man standing before her being her biological father, she felt an immense distance between them.
âI thought you were as kind and loving as a father at first. Even though you saw me as a substitute, you took care of me in every possible way. I once thought you were a smart person as well.â
She reflected on when they first met. The impression Mark had given her was as gentle as a spring breeze. Everyone said he was cunning, yet toward her, he had always shown an extra bit of tolerance.
Even when Summer made mistakes, he did not hesitate to criticize, yet he was also forgiving.
âBut youâve done so many things that disappointed me later on!â
âI disappointed you?â Josie didnât quite understand and chuckled. âFor instance?â
âYou seduced Arnold and betrayed Dexter, didnât you?â
âWell, about that⦠I actually believe you started to have prejudices against me only after you found your biological daughter. I did nothing wrong from the beginning.â
With a cold expression, Mark asked, âSince youâre so smart, do you know why I came today?â
âIâm not curious about it.â
Perhaps it would be more heartbreaking to know.
âMy daughter has been wandering for over a decade before she returned to my side. Today is her big day, and under no circumstances will I allow you to ruin it.â
He preferred to stay, to watch over her.
Josie understood most of it now. So, itâs true that heâs here to watch me, not to save meâ¦
âEven if you knew that Heather was the one who kidnapped meâ¦â Josieâs voice was icy cold.
Mark recalled the previous night. He had inadvertently seen Heather carrying something and heading straight for the mountain. Struck by curiosity, he couldnât resist following her. He watched as she crossed the tea plantation and arrived at this abandoned factory.
And there, Josie, was astonishingly bound inside.
Mark was not unaffected, but he chose not to expose Heather.
âYes,â he said.
Josieâs heart sank a little further.
âShe never had any good days, and youâve been constantly ruining her life. Sheâs so scared that she locked you up here,â Mark said quickly. âI can understand, and I will also cover up for her!â
Josie laughed upon hearing this. Scared?
âShe isnât scared, Mr. Olsen. Sheâs out to kill me.â
She glanced at Johnny at the door. âEven if she killed me, you would cover up for her, wouldnât you?â
With a look of anger on his face, Mark declared, âShe wouldnât!â
âBut what if!â
Mark hesitated, and it was this brief hesitation that made Josieâs heart grow colder and colder.
She realized that in this world, there was truly no one standing by her side.
âYou would cover up for her and hide the evidence. You could easily discard me somewhere no one would ever find. You wouldnât let her be discovered. Under your protection, she would forever remain the pristine Ms. Olsen.â
She accurately voiced Markâs thoughts.
