Meanwhile, The Morning Wavery News had arrived at the printing factory. The headline on the front page was prominently about the union of the Russell and Olsen families. After that day passed, Mrs.
Russell would take on the title. There would be no more speculation.
The wedding was today, and the majority of the Russell family had arrived, all rushing towards the hotel. As far as Josie was concerned, they clearly favored the eldest daughter of the Olsen family to become the future matriarch of the Russell family.
Mason Garden was unusually quiet. The styling team was not allowed to enter. In the end, Larry had no choice but to call Calvin. When the latter arrived, he found the man sitting on the floor smoking, leaning against the couch. In front of him was a large floor-to-ceiling window, reflecting his lonely and desolate profile.
A slight shock filled his heart. âDex, today is the wedding.â
Dexter remained still, his breath heavy, as he watched the burning cigarette at his fingertips.
Calvin didnât dare to rush him. He could only sit to the side, waiting for his response.
After a while, as the sun began to rise outside, a burst of light fell into Dexterâs eyes. He squinted and asked, âHow did it feel to have a wedding ceremony with Zendaya?â
Caught off guard by the sudden question, Calvin stuttered a bit, his response somewhat nonchalant.
âIâm not quite like her. It was merely a matter of convenience. I didnât feel much.â
After saying this, he realized that Dexter and Heather had been in the same situation all along.
âI had promised to give Josie a wedding, but I failed to do so.â
Now, however, he was to have a wedding with another woman.
The corners of his eyes, tinged with red, brimmed with endless regret.
Calvin hesitated for a moment, then placed his hand on his shoulder, giving it a pat. The bond between buddies needed no words.
âIf Josie knew, she would understand.â
However, she had understood him too many times. Even after the divorce, she was still entangled in his life, her fate uncertain. Just the thought of it made Dexterâs heart ache.
âWhat did Mallory say?â
âAt first, she was unwilling to speak. It was only after Josie disappeared that she decided to open up.â
Calvin pulled out a piece of paper. âShe simply suggested that we should look for Justin. Perhaps, we could find some clues.â
The note had a phone number written on it.
Dexter narrowed his eyes. âLeave it to Mr. Peeple.â
He stubbed out his cigarette and rose to his feet. The styling team quickly came in and began their preparations.
Upon receiving the note, Larry immediately followed Moses without a momentâs delay, embarking on a quest to search for clues.
They brushed past a Mercedes on the street. The man inside the car, propping up his face, softly instructed, âSend a team to follow them.â
âYes, Mr. Bastille!â
Afterward, Morgan flipped his phone and dialed a number. The call connected on the other end, but no words were spoken.
âWhere is Josie?â He cut straight to the chase.
His icy voice momentarily stunned the person on the other end. âI couldnât find anything. Heather didnât go anywhere other than Olsen Residence.â
âOlsen Residence⦠So, itâs at Olsen Residence, then.â Morgan snorted coldly. âYou need to find a way to search. Heather is ruthless. Josie cannot die.â
There was no response at first. After a while, Morgan asked in a deep voice, âLaura?â
âAnd then, if Josie were to emerge, she would eventually reclaim everything that belongs to her. What will you do about the things you want then?â
Morgan leaned back in his chair, pressing a finger to his brow. âAs long as Dexter marries Heather, she will be left with no options. What I must protect at this moment is her life.â
âThe risk is substantial.â
âLaura, you talk too much. I donât like it.â
After a moment of silence, Laura finally spoke. âIf Josie finds out that youâre also plotting against her, she will hate you.â
Hate⦠The word caused a pang in Morganâs heart. âEverything I did was for her own good. Dexter was bound to lose everything sooner or later. He is not her destiny.â
âWho is, then? You?â
Laura paused for a moment, then apologized, âI will find out.â After that, she hung up the phone.
