Justin drove at an incredibly high speed. He glanced at the rearview mirror, then turned his attention to Josie. âWhat should we do if Dexter finds us?â
Josie tied up her hair in frustration. âCanât you drive any faster?â
Justin remained patient and quickly replied, âRuby is currently working as a clerk in a small town in Rivodia. Sheâs diligent and ordinary, just like everyone else.â
âWhere is she now?â
âIâve made arrangements at a small inn where no one will find us.â
Ruby was inconspicuous, so unless someone deliberately sought her out, she wouldnât attract any attention.
Josie flipped through the documents that Justin had prepared. It seemed that Ruby had been deceived by him. Justin had posed as a superior from their company, claiming that he was taking her on a business trip to Wavery.
Upon arriving at the hotel, Justin hesitated before unlocking the central control. âJosie, I was shocked to discover that Heather is not Liana. If she is an imposter, then who is the real Liana?â
Josieâs eyes swirled, momentarily stumped by the question.
She opened her mouth. âI donât know.â
Justin stared at her face, somewhat incredulous. âReally?â
âI just want to uncover this conspiracy. You found out everything. How would I know when you donât?â
Josie spoke these words cautiously, unsure of how much Justin would believe her.
She could never come to terms with living as Liana. What did that concept even mean? Would this world accept her?
She felt scared and afraid of having to face it all.
Justin nodded skeptically. âSo why do you want to uncover this conspiracy?â
Josie fell silent for a moment. âI am doing it for⦠Dexter.â
He helped her out of the car and found the room assigned to Ruby.
The door swung open, revealing a woman of simple yet striking beauty. âMr. Warren, youâve arrived,â
she said.
Before Justin could speak, Ruby caught sight of Josie standing behind him. She paused, her expression somewhat odd. âMr. Warren, who is thisâ¦â
âDonât be nervous. She just wants to ask you some questions. Just relax.â
Then, Justin left the room, giving them some privacy.
Ruby noticed that despite the womanâs fashionable clothes, she was quite approachable. Sitting in her chair, she smiled and said, âHello, Ruby. My name is Josie. Have we met somewhere before?â
Ruby also sat down. âYou look familiar to me, but I canât remember where weâve met. Do you know me?â
Josie shook her head. âToday is the first time Iâve met you.â
âSo youâ¦â
Josie pulled out a photo ID from her bag. âThe person you think looks familiar is actually her, isnât it?â
In the photo, it was unmistakably Heatherâs face.
Ruby covered her mouth in surprise. âThis is Rachel! Do you know her? Has something happened to her?â
Josie smiled. âWhatâs your relationship with her?â
âIâm her best friend from high school!â
âNo wonder you recognized her at first glance. It seems you care a lot about her. Does she feel the same about you?â
Rubyâs expression dimmed. âAfter she went to college, we lost contact. But⦠Ms. Warren, has something happened to her?â
Josie shook her head regretfully. âNo, she changed her name, graduated successfully, found a good job, and even reconciled with her family. Sheâs doing well. She doesnât contact you because your presence would cause her trouble.â
Ruby was even more shocked. âWhat are you talking about?â
Josie calmly pulled out another photo. It was a recent picture of Heather. She was sitting in a luxury car, sipping coffee, a far cry from the impoverished girl she was in high school.
