Betrayal.
Josie tensed up. She had already realized that the man inside was Calvin.
Moses quietly explained to her, âAfter Mr. Barrett received your call, he acted immediately. He rescued Mallory before she could be captured by Arnoldâs men.â
Oh, I understand now.
Mallory took a deep breath, adopting a playful tone, âWho knows? Maybe I grew tired of playing around and longed for a more exciting life.â
This statement was clearly provocative. Calvin glanced at her. âSay it again.â
âI said maybe over time, I got tired of playingâ¦â Malloryâs words were interrupted as Calvin pointed the knife he had used to peel the apple directly at her neck. âThink carefully before answering me.â
Mallory looked at him. This man was usually carefree and unconventional, but when he became serious, his presence was overwhelming.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she faced the knife. âThank you for saving me. It wasnât in vain that I didnât reveal the secrets of Heaven on Earth during Arnoldâs interrogation. Calvin, we broke up two months ago. Why are you asking me these questions?â she asked with a laugh.
âYes, it has been two months.â Calvin put the knife away, playing with it in his hand. âIâve long forgotten.â
âI heard you have a new woman by your side who is quite beautiful.â
âIâve never had a shortage of women around me.â
âYes, even when I was with you, women always flocked to you. But you never crossed the line. I appreciate that.â
Her words sounded more like a farewell.
Calvin stopped listening, took a bite of the apple, and stood up. âWeâre even now.â
After saying that, he opened the door and left, accidentally bumping into Josie.
Josie looked embarrassed as she stepped aside. âI-I didnât mean to eavesdrop.â
Calvinâs expression darkened. He didnât pursue it further and walked away. He still appeared unrestrained, but upon closer inspection, a hint of loneliness lingered.
After seeing him leave, Josie quickly entered the hospital room. She looked quite shocked. âWhatâs going on? Youâve broken up!â
Mallory had a wound on her forehead, covered with gauze. She played with her fingers. âI cheated on him.â
Josie was stunned before bursting into laughter. âThatâs quite amusing, but I donât believe it.â
Mallory laughed along. âItâs true. Sorry I didnât tell you immediately.â
Josie didnât understand why, but she also knew that there were some things she shouldnât pry into.
âWhen I called him that day, I thought he wouldnât take action, but he still came to save you. It means he still has feelings for you. Why not give it another try?â
âIâve been with him since I was eighteen. Itâs been five years.â Mallory looked up. âFrom the beginning, I knew we had no future. He would eventually find out that I approached him with a purpose.â
Josie was speechless. After a while, she told Mallory what had happened in the last two days and expressed her gratitude.
âJosie.â Mallory suddenly suggested, âYour path isnât blocked. You should try your luck. At least let Dexter know the truth. If he knows, maybeââ
âMaybe what? He wonât get married?â Josie sighed. âHe has signed a cooperation agreement with the Olsen family. Mark wonât let him off easily. I know he has no choice.â
âAre you just going to stand by and watch?â
Josieâs gaze became evasive, and she didnât answer.
After spending some time with Mallory, Josie went to the restroom. Moses still followed her. She couldnât bear it anymore, âDo you have to follow me into the womenâs restroom?â
âMs. Jo, you have too many ways to escape. I have to be cautious.â
