Josie was injured, and for a good while, Arnold ceased to bother her. Perhaps he knew he was in the wrong, having broken the rules, and was intentionally waiting for her wounds to heal.
Her arm was injured, greatly slowing down the progress of the design sketches. Seeing that she couldnât even lift her hand, Lachlan simply told her to forget it and focus on her recovery first.
Josie, seated in his office, half-jokingly asked, âWhat, are you taking on the responsibilities from Mr. Millsâ side for me?â
Lachlan set down his cup of coffee. âArenât you close with him? Alice, Iâve noticed that your connections back home are more extensive than Iâve imagined.â
Josieâs smile faded. âTheyâre all entanglements from the past.â
âEven if you donât seek help from Robyn, Dexter will sort things out for you, right?â Lachlan sounded somewhat jealous. It seemed he had heard quite a bit about the situation.
Josie didnât plan to always rely on Dexter. Paulâs medicine was almost finished, and she had to take the initiative.
âLachlan, youâve crossed the line.â
Her expression was unreadable, and Lachlan realized this. He nodded, then retrieved a salve from the cabinet and placed it before her. âThis will be beneficial for your wound. Give it a try,â he suggested.
Just then, a commotion arose from outside. Laura had arrived, bringing with her an abundance of pastries, which stirred a wave of excitement among the employees.
Josie didnât take the salve; instead, she walked straight out.
In the crowd, Laura spotted Josie. She approached her and asked, âWhy are you still working despite being injured? Doesnât your wound hurt?â
âQuit acting!â Josie laughed lightly. âWould you have come here if you knew I wasnât around?â
Her straightforwardness made Laura feel somewhat embarrassed. âI heard about the incident at the country club. How did your final check-up go? I was worried, so I came to see you.â
Josie rested her hands on the railing, gazing down at the river view.
âArnold learned about the news so quickly that night. Was it you who informed him?â
Laura did not dodge the question. âOf course. This is no small matter. Itâs only natural that he should handle it.â
Josie nodded, feeling deep within that something was off, but she couldnât quite put her finger on it.
âAre you close with him?â
This question left Laura somewhat at a loss. She smiled and shook her head. âThereâs always something to talk about when it comes to capital. If this project is to be delayed, I can lend a hand.â
Josie smiled as well. âIt seems like your power of speech isnât insignificant.â
âDonât worry. It can be completed on schedule.â
At that moment, Josieâs phone rang. Mallory had sent a message that read: Guess who got suspended from the country club.
Josie replied: Who?
Mallory answered: The country club owner. Guess who the owner is.
Upon reading the message, Josie didnât immediately respond. She put away his phone and turned to Laura. âFrom the looks of it that night, you seem to be a regular at that country clubâ
âDue to work requirements, I often travel back and forth between two cities. As for social engagements, Iâve been to a few.â
âGiven your status, you should be of a high caliber. Do you know the owner of the country club?â
The smile on Lauraâs face froze for a moment, then quickly vanished. âIsnât Arnold the owner?â
âStrange. How did you know Arnold is the owner of this country club? I donât recall ever mentioning it.â
Turning her head, Laura evaded her questioning. âIâve only heard a little about it.â
Josie didnât press further and simply responded with a smile.
She didnât even know what she was doubting. She just felt that the appearance of Laura that night was too much of a coincidence.
