Chapter 70: It really isnât Dr. David
âSorry to bother you, Dr. David.â Sofia swept her long hair back behind her ear, her black silk dress accentuating her voluptuous figure, her allure as a mature woman unmistakable.
âNo trouble at all, itâs part of my job as a doctor,â Dr. David replied, his expression a mix of confusion and surprise. He was suddenly called over by this mature woman to check on her childâs medical report.
His first thought wasnât that she was interested in him, but rather a chill ran down his spine.
He still had headaches at night from the concussion Scarlett gave him last time.
Whenever he saw a beautiful woman, he couldnât help but suspect she might be trying to set him up.
In the hospital room.
Ryan clenched his fists as he watched the figure standing at the door.
âRyan?â Ethan glanced subtly at his fists from his wheelchair. âYou look like somethingâs on your mind?â
âIâ¦â Ryanâs eyes showed resignation as he unclenched his fists, feeling a sense of helplessness wash over him. What could he do?
His mom had taken him out for a walk a few days ago and they had run into that middle-aged doctor. His beautiful mother had struck up a brief conversation with him.
Even though it was just normal chit-chat, Ryan felt uneasy about it.
âEthan.â He suddenly turned to Ethan. âDr. David is your primary doctor, right? Whatâs he like?â
âHuh?â Ethan turned his head towards the door, noting that the two had disappeared. âWhat exactly do you want to know about him, Ryan?â
âIâ¦â Ryan wanted to voice his suspicion that his mother might be involved with the doctor.
But then he thought of Dr. Davidâs portly belly and balding head.
He felt it would be an insult to his mother to even suggest such a thing.
The thought of his beautiful mother in that manâs arms made his head spin.
âHeâs not very well-regarded,â Ethan whispered, noticing Ryanâs troubled expression. âIâve heard from the nurses that he once threatened a patientâs family to achieve some unsavory ends.â
âWhat?â Ryanâs hand flew to his forehead as his vision darkened.
Suddenly, it all clicked.
All the pieces in his mind connected at that moment.
No wonder every time his mom came back from dropping off Ethan, she looked like sheâd just made love.
Because Ethanâs room was close to that middle-aged doctorâs office.
âRyan, are you feeling okay?â Ethan saw his pale face and decided to swallow any further fabricated rumors, this was enough.
If he pushed further.
Ryan might end up in the emergency room again.
âMedicine.â Ryan frantically grabbed the medicine box from the bedside, quickly swallowing the pills inside, then held his chest until he felt a bit better. He waved at Ethan, managing a weak smile, âIâm fine.â
âOh, Ryan, I brought you a gift.â Ethan quickly changed the subject, pulling out a shopping bag. âItâs a comic my sister read once and then just left lying around. You donât use your phone much, so maybe you can read this when youâre bored.â
âUh, sure, thanks.â Ryan took the comics.
âShe and His Secretsâ
âThe Contract Sistersâ Blissful Lifeâ
His mouth twitched as he saw the cover of the comics, featuring a man and woman embracing and kissing, and he knew exactly what kind of content it was.
The image of that tall, dashing woman flashed through Ryanâs mind.
A woman like that enjoying adult comics didnât seem so strange after all.
âIâm heading out,â Ethan said as he saw Sofia returning, bidding Ryan goodbye.
âYeah, okay.â Ryan covertly watched his mother, relieved to see no blush on her face, but his anxiety spiked again when he saw her sending Ethan off.
Watching his motherâs retreating figure, his emotions rollercoastered.
Ethan was wheeled back into his room.
âRyanâs been in a bad way these days.â As soon as Sofia entered the room and saw they were alone, she asked anxiously, âIf this keeps up, his health wonât hold.â
âI know.â Ethan closed his eyes, seeing Ryanâs dark circles today told him his mental defenses were nearly shattered.
After all, knowing his beautiful motherâs partner was a middle-aged, balding man of terrible character would be too much for anyone.
âAunt Sofia, donât panic. We have to wait for him to open up on his own. Whatever we say, heâll only believe it if he doesnât think itâs just an excuse to deceive him.â
âHow long then?â Sofia asked, her heart aching like it was being sliced open as she watched her son suffer from insomnia. âWe canât wait any longer, I want to tell him the truth.â
Deep down, she still agreed with Ethanâs plan.
After all, comparing that unsightly Dr. David, even telling her son that she had been intimate with Ethan a few times just out of loneliness seemed acceptable.
She thought Ryan would accept that too.
âGive it another two days,â Ethan said calmly. Confronting Ryan now would just bring them back to square one.
Ryanâs hope was for his mom to find someone reliable.
He didnât see himself as that man in Ryanâs eyes,to Ryan, it was a toss-up whoâd be gone first, him or Ethan.
âOkay,â Sofia agreed.
This time, they didnât bring up the topic of making love.
Given the situation, with Sofia as a mother seeing her son like that, she couldnât possibly think about a quick fling.
When she returned to the room, she saw Ryan hesitating to speak.
âRyan, is something on your mind?â
âMom.â Ryan looked at his mother, tormented by the nightmares that had plagued him these days and what he heard today about Dr. Davidâs misconduct.
A fire burned in his heart.
âIs the person youâre seeing⦠is it Dr. David?â
Sofia saw the anger in her child and trembled, Ethanâs handsome face flashing in her mind. Had he guessed it all?
âNo.â Sofia shook her head, turning away, her gaze evasive. âDonât think like that.â
âThen who is it?â Ryan tried to smile. âI think I should know.â
Sofia was silent for a long time, then shook her head again. âItâs not the right time yet.â
Hearing this, Ryan clutched his chest as a sharp pain struck him. He wasnât a fool, his motherâs reluctance to tell him was as good as confirming it was David.
If it were someone else, why the secrecy?
âMom, can you not be with him?â
ââ¦â Sofia opened her mouth but said nothing.
Seeing his mother like this, Ryan felt a deep sense of despair. His mother liked that man.
In that moment, his whole being felt a shock.
And his mother was the one he had personally sent out.
Ryanâs eyes began to redden, and large tears rolled down his cheeks. âWhy him? Why did it have to be like this?â
âSon.â Sofia was frightened by her childâs state. âIt really isnât Dr. David.â
âThen who is it?â Ryan, seeing his mother still lying to him, had a face full of despair.
