âMs. Fleming, please understand, as youâre at Ocean University, you must follow our rules.â
âRules?â scoffed Claire. âYou made a whole scene to make Joseph swoop to your rescue, destroying our lab in the process, and you talk to me about rules? To still be a student, and pull that kind of stunt... despicable.â
Gradually, others began to tune in to their conversation, and then Kathy understood: they all think sheâd purposely gotten herself locked in, forcing Joseph to come save her. But sheâd been trapped with a poisonous gas, it could have killed her!
Kathy pursed her lips. âI donât know why youâre all so prejudiced against me. When the lab was destroyed, I was a victim too.â
âA victim? You seem fine to me. You and Joseph have a complicated relationship, go speak with him directly,â said Claire coldly.
âDo you really want him to hear about this?â Kathyâs voice grew cooler. âYou donât follow the universityâs rules, and even spread rumors about your boss... I doubt the company will let you get away with that.â
The voices around them grew quiet. No one wanted Joseph to know of this. They only dared bully Kathy. And so finally Claire passed papers to Kathy and said reluctantly, âThis is our content for today. Have a look.â
Kathy took them, facing all those mocking faces, and felt worse immediately. Leaving the lab, she took deep breaths, trying to calm down. Then, going to Professor Watsonâs office, she tried to regulate her mood.
But he had sharp eyes, and saw something was off with her. âWhoâs bullied my student?â
âNobody,â she replied, handing the papers over.
âI heard there was an accident at the Josephsâ Group Lap. What happened?â he asked instead.
He had no idea sheâd been hurt. âThe electricity went out, and all the instruments are in the process of being repaired.â
âWhy do they need repaired?â
âI donât quite understand either.â
He looked at her. âKathy, tell me the truth.â Before his gaze, she felt helpless. âIf you donât tell me, Iâll go ask Joseph.â
âProfessor, itâs nothing.â
âThen why does the whole lab need repairs? You must tell me whatâs wrong. Is there a problem with the research?â
âNo, itâs all my fault. When the power got cut, I was trapped inside, and Joseph had to all but destroy the place to save me.â
At this, Professor Watson laughed, and she looked at him in confusion. He explained, rubbing his chin, âI wouldnât have thought him so sentimental.â
Kathy stared. Sentimental? As sheâd passed out, she didnât quite remember the whole debacle. Only Josephâs worried voice, which had turned out to be real...
The next day, Kathy had to go back to the hospital for a checkup, and Zofia planned to accompany her, but Kathy said, âHavenât you got class? Iâll go on my own.â
Zofiaâs already asked for time off though. âI worry for you, going to the hospital is very lonely.â
Kathy smiled. âIâm really fine.â
âUnacceptable. Letâs go,â Zofia insisted.
Outside, a black car was waitingâBertieâs. Kathy wasnât not pleased. The two of them hadnât got umbrellas, and it had just begun raining. âBertie, what are you doing here?â asked Zofia in surprise.
Bertieâs gaze stayed fixed on Kathy. âIâve come to take Kathy to her appointment.â
Yet Kathy had no intention of getting in his car. âI wouldnât want to trouble you.â Beside her, Zofia felt rather awkwardâshe knew Kathy wanted nothing to do with Bertie, but he was her brother...
âItâs no trouble. Letâs go, parking here is an issue.â
Kathy, whoâd been preparing to go fetch an umbrella, furrowed her brow at him. âBertie, leave.â Then she went back inside.
Zofia said helplessly, âProbably itâs best if you head back.â
But Bertieâs face was set. He wouldnât give up on things heâd decided to do. When Kathy returned with an umbrella, he was still there. But Kathy didnât so much as look with him. She set off, with him following in his car. Zofia, tagging after her, couldnât help but look back.
At their school, this had gained quite a bit of attentionâa luxury car tailing a female student. It was suddenly the topic of much gossip.
âHas the university really become so brazen? Thatâs a hundred thousand dollar car...â
âExactly, is he interested in Kathy?â

Hearing those nasty things, Kathyâs expression didnât change, but Zofia couldnât help but shout, âShut up, what are you lot talking about, that car is my brotherâs, heâs come to get me!â
At that, some students didnât dare speak. But still, they couldnât help but be interested. Outside the school gates, Kathy and Zofia climbed in a taxi.
With some regret Kathy said, âZofia, thank you for that.â Those students had said awful things, but Zofia had borne them with her.
âWhat are you talking about? Itâs all my brotherâs fault. Iâll yell at him later. He canât keep coming to our school, it sends the wrong message,â said Zofia angrily.
âI donât want anything to do with him, but itâs like heâs part of half the family. I canât avoid him.â Even though her grandfather had already died, many of the Booth Groupâs holdings were still with Bertie. If she took them over, sheâd have to cooperate with him.
Zofia said, âIf that is really how you feel, you must make that clear to him. Donât give him any hope.â Still, she couldnât help but feel badly for her brother.
When they arrived at the hospital, Zofia noticed her brother follow them in. He only came over once Kathy had entered the examination room. His expression was gloomy, but he wouldnât let Kathy see as much. Zofia said, âBertie, Kathyâs really not interested in you.â
âShe can develop feelings,â he insisted.
âBut youâve chased her for so long...â
His eyes gleamed. âDo you think me the sort to give up easily?â
Zofia knew her brotherâs personality, but she also knew Kathyâs heart, which still belonged to Joseph. âHasnât Mother introduced any other potential matches to you?â For a while there their mother had constantly thrown girls at Bertie, and had even gone so far as to sign a marriage contract with the Fletcher family, stipulating Bertie marry before he turned thirty. But things had changed.
âIâm set on Kathy.â
Then Zofia understood. Their mother knows she couldnât persuade him to consider other girls. âBertie, youâre on your own.â
