The nights ~ Avicii
âââââââââââââââ
"Hey mom! We're home." I shout into the house, closing the door behind Em who was staying the night. It was almost a tradition at this stage, every Friday for the last three weeks Em had refused to leave my side. Always watching and protecting me.
"Hey honey." My mom answers as she appears from around the corner, her saddened smile is hidden when she notices the girls with me.
"Hey Ms Lake!" Amy innocently waves at my mom, who makes her way over to us.
"Amy, I've told you seven times now to call me Aileen." My mom shakes her head as she stands before us. "You make me sound so old." She laughs, over-exaggerating the word old. After-all, she was only thirty-eight.
"Sorry, it's a force of habit." Amy replies.
Mom hated being called Ms Lake. She told both Em and I that when we were younger that it made her feel formal, and trust me, my mom was the complete opposite of formal.
She was a small-time artist, 'yet to be discovered' is what she would say. But I worried that the day she would be discovered wouldn't ever come. Money was much shorter nowadays, but we made it work - it was only the two of us anyway. After turning fourteen I was able to get a part time job at the nearest grocery.
Even though sometimes we grew short on money when she couldn't sell her paintings, I was confident we would do okay. We had so far, and I was confident we would continue to do so.
My dad however was a complete mystery to me, my mom never spoke of him...
I'd never met him, never seen him, and couldn't tell you his name if I tried. My mom was strong and she brought me up on her own, she didn't need need anyone expect herself and from what I could remember, she'd been on one date my entire life.
And the rest of my family respected her for raising me herself.
Occasionally, she would joke about me being born because she was artificially inseminated. Part of me wasn't sure if she was joking anymore.
My mom rushes over to Em and gives her a huge hug, after all, my mom and Em were like best friends. They got on like best friends even with the twenty year gap. Sometimes I wondered if she even knew that Em wasn't her daughter.
Em closes her eyes and smiles as my mom wraps her arms around her. Recently they'd gotten closer, almost as if there was some invisible bond between them I couldn't recreate with my mom. It was truly beautiful.
Em moved to the town about fifteen years ago, so I'd known her and been best friends with her nearly my whole life. The bonus was that she lived only three doors down the street. It was perfect.
Amy however lived slightly further away with her parents and her little sister in a larger house. Both of my best friends had fathers, and both were respectful enough to never mention them in a demeaning way.
Em's parents however were constantly on holiday, they trusted her with the house by herself. If only they knew about the parties she had while they were away. I hadn't seen them in two years, but apparently they stopped in monthly to check on Em and the house. Em was extremely lucky, her family were filthy rich and she stayed in her house by herself while her family explored the world. Em didn't like moving around, so she stayed here with me in Darkfall.
Like big kids, all three of us race each other up the stairs to get to my room. It wasn't huge, but my mom made sure it was beautiful, or as she put it "a work of art." Every wall was hand painted by my mum when I turned fourteen for my birthday, it resembled that of autumn as that was when I was born. Oranges and crimsons spread across the room in the form of a sunset against a forest background. It was so beautiful, my mom had outdone herself.
"Just kick your shoes off anywhere," I speak as enthusiastically as I could, throwing myself onto my bed with a large sigh. Fridays exhausted me and soon after I feel two more bodies lie down beside me.
We had all been good friends for a long time now, but I was quite fussy with my friends. You never knew who you could trust in this town, it had a certain reputation for mysterious things happening with no answers or explanations.
Even the trees that surrounded the town spoke secrets to each other.
"Why does your room have be so pretty!" Amy laughs, turning her head towards me. I smile as I recall the memory of walking in it for the first time with my blindfold on. My moms hard work brought me to tears.
"Thanks Amy." I smile back at her, getting up to look at the rain that which had started to fall. The dead, brown leaves were peacefully lying on the ground, being blown away by the soft wind. Before I could piece it together, I noticed that something was different.
"Hey guys, look at this - the house across the road has a new family moving in." I point.
Both girls immediately got off of the bed and run to the window beside me. Straight away the both of them were checking for eligible bachelors like the boy-thirsty girls they were. Em wasn't much of an issue, she would call some boys cute here and there but never actually look for a relationship. Amy however would die for a hot guy who's name she didn't know.
A dark-haired man and a woman get out of a blue car and run to open and unlock the door to their new house. Attempting to escape the rain and getting wet as best they could. It was a very similar house to our on the outside, but inside, our house was one of a kind.
Behind their car sits a large truck that was I assumed was keeping all of their stuff. Several men had began to unpack it, bringing it into their house for them in large boxes.
"Oh my gosh!" Amy shouts, pointing at a stranger in a black hoodie that jumps out of the car as the rain slows. As if he hears, his head snaps around to look at us, making immediate eye contact with me. His blue eyes jump at me as his hood seemed to cover a lot of his face.
I notice Em look between us a couple of times, a stern look on her face as her lips open slightly.
We lock eyes for what seems a minute, before he runs out of the rain and into the house that was directly across the street from mine. Out of our sights.
"Think he's got any brothers?" Amy jokes, walking away from the window and sitting back down onto the bed. A giant grin on her face.
"Ugh I wish. He's absolutely gorgeous." Em answers, slightly uneasy for some reason, it was as if she had seen him before. I knew her all to well, I always had.
"And how do you know that?" Amy laughs, and Em goes slightly pale. "C-cause no one else got out of the car...duh?"
"I think he likes you Cece!" Amy giggles changing the subject, "he was looking at you!"
I laugh and quickly shut down any rumours with the one line I knew would.
"I have a boyfriend." I put my hands on my hips, sticking my lips out at them. All of us were silent for a second.
"Yeah, and it's not Ashton that's for sure," Em mutters under her breath. We all then burst out laughing. Out of all three of us I was the only one to be in a relationship. I was with Ashton and I was happy, we'd been together for about 4 months now and my favourite thing in the world to do was run my fingers through his thick light-brown hair whenever I had the chance. It was still early, but there was so much potential.
Em pulls out my curling iron and begins curling her light brown hair while Amy pulls out some makeup and begins experimenting on her face - trying to see if she could hide her thick freckles which she had been self-cautious about since the day I met her.
A really stupid idea came into mind - which obviously meant I was going to do it with me being me.
"Hey guys!" I announce to my friends, both stop what they were doing instantly. Em and Amy look at me blankly as my smirk grows bigger, Ems blue eyes were blinking blandly at me, so she already knew I was planning something stupid.
"What?" Em grunts, annoyed that I'd interrupted the precious time she had with her hair.
"Want to do something daft?" I ask, raising my dark eyebrows at her.
"Wait stop, I'm down." Em interrupts, standing up and raising her hand.
"But you don't even know what she's gonna say." Amy laughs, throwing her head back as if it was the funniest thing she had ever heard.
"If it's stupid then heck yeah I'm in!" Em yells, nearly falling off the bed at this point, she was as clumsy as me sometimes.
I laugh really loudly at the idiots that I loved. This whole situation was so stupid, sometimes we had the maturity of twelve year old girls.
I was close with Ashton, but no matter what, these idiots would always come first, always. Nothing in this world could ever change that.
"So what dumb thing are we gonna do tonight?" Amy questions me, very cautious of how stupid the idea was. Her eyes narrow at me, trying to figure out what I was gonna do. Em by this point had probably worked it out.
"What would you say about giving our new neighbours a little visit?" A smirk comes across my face.
"You're kidding right?" Amy grins, obviously not taking me seriously.
"Yes girl!" Em cheers, pretending to be a drunk frat girl, even though it wouldn't surprise me if she really was drunk somehow. Em lived by the term, you only live once religiously.
"Okay ladies," I clap dramatically.
"let's give them a nice warm welcome to Darkfall."
Sorry guys! This is the second draft of this chapter, next chapter we will get introduced to a very important character, and I promise that it will get more werewolf-like.
