Chapter 17 Matthew Enjoyed Self Deprecation The assistant double–checked. “Mr. Leedon, the card number is correct. There truly are no transaction records.”

Finished After ending the call, Gideon looked at his wife, eldest son, and adopted daughter, momentarily at a loss for words.

“Maybe it’s because Aurelia usually spends her boyfriend’s money?” A thought flashed through Melanie’s mind and she thought of Curtis.

“Her boyfriend, that little office worker?” Luna’s tone was full of disdain.

Melanie kept her head down, afraid that Luna would discover her secret relationship with Curtis. She nodded slightly. “Yes, I’ve heard from my sister that her boyfriend spends all his money on her. I happen to have his phone number, so I’ll call and ask if she has moved in with him.”

“Before she was even married, she spent a man’s money, and that’s not all. She even went to live with him. She’s completely tarnished the Leedon family’s reputation. She has no self–respect!” Aaron didn’t hide his disdain for Aurelia at all.

Melanie dialed Curtis‘ number. “Mr. Fletcher, may I ask, when you were seeing my sister, was she always spending your money?”

Curtis was somewhat baffled, but he still played along with Melanie. “Hmm... Yes, I’m usually the one who spends money. Is there a problem with that?”

“Didn’t my older sister promise to repay you?”

“There was no distinction between us. Just a few days ago, I transferred a bonus of one hundred thousand that the company had just giyen me to her, claiming she had an urgent need,” Curtis blatantly lied.

Melanie was very pleased with Curtis‘ performance. She had her phone’s speaker volume turned up to the maximum so that her father and the others could hear it. “Is she living with you now?”

Curtis fell silent for a few seconds. He had been searching for Aurelia everywhere, asking many mutual acquaintances, but no one seemed to know where Aurelia was. However... “Up until yesterday, she was living with me. However, when she asked me for money and I didn’t give it to her, she got very angry. Then, she ran away from home. Do you know where she is now?”

He guessed correctly that when Melanie made the call, it was definitely on speakerphone, with her father and others present nearby.

Just as she entered the supermarket, Matthew gave her a call. “Where are you?”

“The supermarket at Merryborne Mall,” answered Aurelia.

“Wait for me.”

After ending the call, Aurelia was somewhat bewildered. Wait for him? Is he nearby?

In hindsight, it occurred to her that right across from Merryborne Mall stood the towering edifice of Quigley Group, a landmark building in the city of Jacaster.

While waiting for Matthew, Aurelia had already bought quite a few bags of chips and a pile of snacks from the snack section.

In her previous life, ever since the car accident, she never had the chance to eat those things again. Before the accident, she was reluctant to spend money on such junk food.

At that moment, she didn’t just want to eat. She also wanted to prepare some in the car to take home for Herbert. She and her brother enjoyed eating those snacks while catching up on their favorite shows.

Matthew had hardly ever visited a supermarket.

Moreover, at that time, the supermarket was filled with people who had come to browse after work, and he felt somewhat out of place amidst them.

Therefore, by the time he found Aurelia in the supermarket, his handsome face seemed to have formed a thick layer of ice, the kind of coldness that could freeze a person to death.

He was already cold–hearted, but he had become even colder.

Aurelia was so engrossed in buying snacks that it was only when she put down a bag of snag looked up that she noticed Matthew.

Without even sparing a glance, Matthew spoke in a cool, detached tone, “I never eat such junk food.”

“This is a potato chip produced by the food company under your Quigley Group, isn’t it? Do you usually enjoy self–deprecating humor, Mr. Quigley?” Although Aurelia was good–natured, it didn’t mean she had to endure undeserved misfortune. Why is he venting at me when he should be confronting the person pissing him off?

Over the past couple of days, out of respect for Mabel, even though Aurelia noticed his attitude. was problematic, she didn’t argue with him. She had given him enough dignity.

Matthew’s face darkened, his gaze sharp as a blade. After all, he was the head of Quigley Group, and a single glance from him could make people tremble in fear.

Aurelia lived once again, having encountered people far more terrifying than any demon or monster. Yet, under the icy gaze of Matthew, she still felt a tightening in her chest.

“Grandmother asked you to accompany me to the auction house,” Matthew began in a cold voice. “She has taken a liking to a piece of jewelry and wants us to bid on it for her.”

Had it not been for his grandmother’s request, he would have never considered taking her along. After all, it was just a matter of bidding on a piece of jewelry, something he could have easily done by himself.

The woman before him had beautiful eyes. When she laughed, they were clear and bright, shaped like crescent moons, gentle yet harmless. However, when she wasn’t laughing and showed a hint of anger, she resembled a young creature ready to fight against fate. It could give one an instant illusion as if she had been subjected to much injustice.

He yearned to cherish her.

However, that thought had barely surfaced before it was extinguished.

Aurelia was not only cunning, but also adept at disguising herself.

“All right,” Aurelia agreed. She had no reason to refuse Mabel’s request.

“Your clothes won’t do.” Matthew’s indifferent gaze revealed a hint of criticism.

He glanced at his wristwatch, “The auction is at seven tonight. It’s not even five yet. We still have time to prepare. I’ll have my assistant, Gordon, take you somewhere to change while I wait for you at the auction house.”

“All right, I’ll pay for the items first and then take them to my car. Please have Mr. Zeller wait for me at the parking lot exit.” After Aurelia finished speaking, she pushed the shopping cart toward the checkout counter to pay.

3:20 PM –

Originally, Gordon was supposed to drive to pick up Aurelia. However, when Aurelia mentioned that she had driven herself, he went straight over.

Upon reaching the exit of the shopping mall’s parking lot, they went into Aurelia’s new energy- efficient compact car.

At a height of one hundred and eighty–five centimeters, Gordon wasn’t as tall as his boss, but when he sat down, his head directly touched the car roof, making the small car seem even smaller. “Mrs. Quigley, with so many cars in Mr. Quigley’s garage, why didn’t you drive one of his cars?”

“My car is more eco–friendly.”

Aurelia said that but what she was thinking was that she and Matthew were only married by agreement, not truly husband and wife. His belongings were his own, and they had nothing to do with her.
