Caitlin Carterâs eyes brimmed with redness, her lips pursed, silent.
Christopher Simonson felt irritated and said to his mother, âItâs precisely because weâre not sure if they have sufficient ability that we should go and see. Scott has suffered these past two years inside; Caitlin cannot be at peace seeing her younger brother wrongfully accused. We should try any opportunity that comes our way; itâs only human nature.â
The old lady, seeing her son defend his wife, grew even more angry and snapped, âWrongfully accused? He committed murder and broke the law! If it werenât for the Simonson Family hiring a lawyer and pulling strings, heâd have been executed long ago!â@@novelbin@@
âMy younger brother didnât commit murder!â Caitlinâs tears spilled out.
Raised with strict discipline, she could never talk back to her elders. She could endure anything else, but she could not stay silent about her brotherâs case!
âHe was framed,â Caitlin clenched her tableware so tightly that her knuckles turned white. âHeâs just hot-tempered, but he has a soft heart; he couldnât possibly have committed murder! The truth will come out one day!â
After speaking, Caitlin took a deep breath, put down her tableware, and said softly, âDad, Mom, Iâve finished eating.â
Seeing his wife leave the table, Christopher found his own meal hard to swallow and sighed, âMom, why canât we just eat in peace?â
âWhoâs stopping us from eating in peace? Who walked away sulking?â The old ladyâs face was full of wrath. âDonât you know all about her brotherâs case? Someone saw him commit murder with their own eyes! Youâre at a critical point in your career, and she wants to overturn a murder conviction!â
The old lady found it unbearable to even think about the matter, the more she thought about it, the more upset she became. She wanted to say more, but was interrupted by Old Master Simonsonâs stern voice.
âEnough!â The old masterâs voice wasnât loud, but carried an authoritative weight, âLetâs say less and eat.â
Christopher ate a few bites, but the food had lost its taste. He stood up and said, âIâve finished eating. Thereâs a speech tomorrow; Iâm going to review the speech text.â
Old Master Simonson nodded slightly, âGet some rest early. Youâve been looking quite pale lately. The voters expect to see an ever-vigorous president. If you feel tired, consider adjusting your schedule, reduce public appearances rather than showing up looking unenergetic.â
Christopher nodded and stood up to leave.
Anxious about Caitlin, he returned to the bedroom and indeed he found Caitlin Carter sitting on the edge of the bed, sobbing softly.
âAhâ¦â Christopher walked over and sat beside her, âMomâs getting old; her temper is becoming more and more contrary and perverse. Iâm sorry you had to suffer.â
Caitlin shook her head and asked Christopher, âWhy did you come back so soon? Did you not eat much? You shouldnât do that, you already work hard enough every day. If you donât eat well, how will your body hold up?â
As she spoke, she got up, âIâll go to the kitchen and have them send a bowl of soup here for you.â
âNo need,â Christopher pulled her back, speaking faintly, âIâm not hungry, just want to lie down for a while. Caitlin, could you rub my head again?â
Caitlin sat down and started massaging Christopher just as she always did. When she touched his skin, she felt it was somewhat hot.
âDo you have a fever?â Caitlin was startled, immediately grabbing an electronic thermometer from the drawer and taking his temperature.
The reading showed a mild fever.
Christopher appeared unaware that he was ill, only feeling his head was slightly heavy and lacked energy.
âItâs probably because I havenât been resting well lately,â he said.
âLie down and rest; Iâll go get some medicine,â Caitlin helped him to lie down, then turned to fetch some antipyretic and brought back some hot water.
Christopher took the medicine with hot water and afterward fell into a groggy sleep.
Looking at her sick husband, Caitlin felt torn. On one hand, she was distressed over her husbandâs health; on the other, she hesitated⦠Was it right to leave her sick husband behind and go to Clearwater?
