Jade Carlson ignored Evelyn Willard.
She spotted the lighter on the bedside table, walked over to pick it up in her hand, and turned to leave.
Evelyn Willard sat up from the bed immediately, âWhat are you doing with a lighter in the middle of the night?!â
Jade walked straight out the door, but Evelyn slipped on her slippers and chased after her, grabbing her hand and demanding, âWhatâs the matter with you? Why wonât you answer?â
âMind your own business.â Jade shook off her hand and hurried towards her own room.
Seeing Jadeâs anxious and irritated demeanor, Evelyn had an epiphany, her face turning pale.
âJade?⦠Jade! Stop right there!â Evelyn jogged nervously over and grabbed hold of Jade, âDid you touch that stuff again?! How many times have I told you! You canât touch it!â
Evelynâs voice was particularly sharp and piercing in the silent, night-time corridor.
âAre you crazy! Keep it down!â Jade hissed, âDo you want to get me killed?â
Taking a deep breath, Evelyn gripped Jade, âHow could this happen? Didnât I tell you to tamper with Nathaniel Summersâs cigarettes? Why are you smoking them too? Do you even know what that stuff is? Do you understand the consequences at all?â
Jade closed her eyes, frustrated, and rubbed her forehead, âSometimes he insists that I smoke with him⦠Iâve made excuses to refuse twice, but I canât refuse every single time, heâll get suspicious.â
Hearing this, Evelynâs heart turned cold.
She stood there stunned, but Jade couldnât wait any longer and just wanted to get back to her room to take a dragâeven just one would be fine, at least to stop feeling as if her whole body was itching unbearably.
âSomethingâs not right.â Evelyn held on, not letting her leave, âJade, we might have been exposed. Nathaniel is deliberately setting you up⦠We canât stay here any longer! Quick, grab your things, weâre leaving right now!â
âWhat kind of madness is this in the middle of the night?!â Jade was thoroughly annoyed, she just wanted to go back to her room and have a smoke, but Evelyn wouldnât stop nagging her here!
âLet me go!â Jade said angrily.
The two wrestled all the way to the staircase. Jade became even more frantic, fearing that if a servant happened by, she wouldnât know how to explain her conflict with Evelyn!
Evelyn said, âWe must leave quickly! Nathaniel means no good, he will definitely use this to blackmail you! Possession, poisoning, drug use, they are all serious crimes! Jade, do you want to spend the rest of your life in prison?â
Not to mention, this would directly implicate Evelyn! After all, she was the supplier of the merchandise!
Normally, Jade would have calmed down to think carefully, but right now, her entire body felt like it crawled with ants, irritable and anxious, unable to listen to anything!
âStop pulling on me! I need to go back to my room!â Jade nearly shouted, she didnât want to care about anything else, she just wanted to go back to her room and take a few deep drags!
But Evelyn insisted on pulling her downstairs, âWhile Nathaniel is off guard, we should make a run for it! You go down first and hail a taxi, Iâll grab our things and follow right awayâ¦â
âCanât you just stop annoying me?!â Jade burst out angrily, âIf you want to leave, go by yourself, Iâm not going!â
Her relationship with Nathaniel had improved with great difficulty, how could she leave?!
No!
She would absolutely not leave!
âJade, listen to me, the situation is wrongâ¦â Evelynâs hand tightly clutched Jadeâs arm, digging deep into the flesh, âNathaniel probably wants to deal with us, the stuff I gave you before, if it falls into his hands, it becomes evidence of crime! We must escape now! Leave Clearwater City!â
âYouâre hurting me!â Jade struggled vigorously, shoving Evelyn hard, âGet off!ââ
Evelynâs slender body leaned back, her fingers open, scrambling in the air but unable to grasp anything.
Thud!âShe fell heavily on the staircase and rolled down.
