Evelyn Willard said that Nathaniel Summers should get engaged to Jade Carlson.
Nathaniel Summersâs face turned ashen in an instant, filled with both anger and ridicule!
He really wanted to ask Evelyn Willard if she was dreaming? Otherwise, how could she say such shameless words?
At first, in order to help him recover, Jade Carlson sacrificed her chastity without hesitation, and he was shaken and moved; he only intended to compensate her with money.
Back then, he hadnât even thought about marrying her, let alone now? ââ Especially now that he knew all about Jade Carlsonâs actions, he could barely contain his disgust and hatred, how could he marry her?!
Had he gone mad?!
âAre you joking?â Nathaniel Summers said, his gloomy face covered with frost, his deep eyes emitting a fierce coldness as he stared quietly at Evelyn Willard.
Jade Carlson destroyed his marriage, injured his body, and played him for a fool to the applause of others; he didnât tear her into thousands of pieces out of mercyâhow could he possibly be foolish enough to get engaged to her?!
Where does Evelyn Willard find her confidence?
What right does she have to make such a demand?
Have this mother and daughter really lost all shame?!
âMr. Summers, if you donât care who is designing and plotting against you in the shadows, you can pretend I never brought this up,â Evelyn Willard continued with a sure smile, infuriating Nathaniel.
Evelyn Willard said, âJade Carlson is my daughter; no one knows her better than her mother. To coax secrets from her, you must wait until she is most relaxed and unguarded, when she is most proud and careless. At that moment, with some indirect probing, we can unquestionably get the answer.
Mr. Summers, I know you resent her. If you really make Jade marry you, wouldnât she suffer all sorts of humiliation and torment at your hands? She is, after all, my daughter, and I cannot bear to see her treated so cruelly.â
Nathaniel Summers was taken aback; he was puzzled by Evelyn Willardâs actions.
âThe engagement is simply to give Jade a social status,â Evelyn explained. âOnce I get the information from her, you can easily break off the marriage contract. To outsiders, it will appear nothing more than a gentlemanâs romantic affair. Mr. Summers, you donât have to lose anything, and you can find out exactly who is harming youâitâs a good deal for you.â
Unable to help himself, Nathaniel Summers asked, âWhat are you really after by doing all this?â
Evelyn Willard smiled, âJade has had a tough time lately; she offended Mrs. Farrell, and sheâs practically out of options in Clearwater City. If you could get engaged to her, Mrs. Farrell, out of respect for the Summers family, would undoubtedly let her off the hook. Jade is my only daughter; if her life improves, naturally, my life gets better, too. I have been worrying and working hard for Mr. Summers, and I trust that you wonât let me down afterwards, right?â
Nathaniel Summers remained silent, the gloom in his eyes persisting.
Evelyn Willard wasnât in a hurry, waiting serenely with a smile for his response.
After a long pause, Nathaniel Summers said, âIâll consider it for a few days.â
Evelyn Willard laughed, âA few months is fine too; itâs just that Jade is barely hanging on. Mrs. Farrell is eager to drive her out of Clearwater City. It will be even harder to find out who is behind this if she really leaves.â
Disgust flashed in Nathanielâs eyes as he rose and left with a sullen face.
Evelyn Willard was indirectly blackmailing him.
She pointed out Jade Carlsonâs difficulties, asking Nathaniel Summers to help Jade through her tough times, using the truth behind the scenes as bait.
What a cunning woman.
Nathaniel Summers thought that if he truly agreed to an engagement, he might have to pay a hefty price to free himself from this mother and daughter in the future.
With that thought, the other party was not only cunning but greedy too!
