Unexpectedly touched, Qin Yining knew that née Ma was doing this because the older woman genuinely liked her. Her grandmother-in-law wasnât a picky person and cared more about the thought than actual skill, but the new princess consort was well aware of the level of her own embroidery skills. They couldnât really be described as delicate, but they were quite soundly made.
âMom, please have a cup of tea.â Qin Yining knelt in front of née Yao after taking a teacup from a servant.
Née Yao accepted the cup with a smile and took a sip, returning a heavy red envelope and an intricately carved wooden box.
Qin Yining made a happy curtsey. âThank you, mom.â She indicated for Bingtang to take the items and offered a pair of shoes with both hands.
The gift was merrily received. âMany thanks, do get up.â
âThatâs right, come sit with your grandmother.â Née Ma enthusiastically tugged on Qin Yiningâs hands and had the girl sit right next to her. Her granddaughter-in-law was pleasing to the eye no matter how the matriarch assessed her.
âGood child, weâve wished and hoped, and wished and hoped some more. Youâve finally joined our household. Dafu has someone to take care of him now that youâre here. We donât have more servants that masters and mistresses in the manor, but neither I nor your mother-in-law know how to manage all this. Weâll turn all this over to you.â
âI understand grandmotherâs good intentions, but Iâm still young and unlearned in the ways of the world. Iâm afraid that Iâll lose face for us if I donât do well.â
It wasnât that Qin Yining really didnât know how to keep a household in order. Sheâd been head of the inner household back in Great Yan. She just felt that itâd be a highly displeasing act to steal her mother-in-lawâs authority as soon as she married into the family.
Née Yao smiled. âYouâre a smart child and will be familiar with the household affairs the more you run them. You can come ask me if you have any questions. Youâll know what to do after I guide you a few times. Iâm old now and only look forward to when I can dote on my grandsons. I donât have the effort to care about anything else.â
A red flush immediately exploded across Qin Yiningâs face. She stammered, âUn-understood. Iâll come ask mom if thereâs anything I donât understand.â
Her mother-in-law nodded gaily. âIâll have Zhao Kunjiaâs wife bring over her verification tokens [1] to your Park of Resplendent Radiance.â
The girl thought for a moment, then asked with a smile, âMom, your daughter has a favor to ask. Could you lend me Missus Zhang for a while? I donât need her to wait on me in the house. Itâs just that Iâm young and inexperienced, and thereâs much about the manor that I still donât know about. Missus Zhang will be able to help me pick things up, and if there are any messages that need to be delivered, she will lend more gravity to the task.â
Née Yao couldnât help but look meaningfully at the girl. The look in her daughter-in-lawâs eyes was sincere without the slightest hint of reluctance.
What a smart girl!
Rather than wait for her mother-in-law to send her a pair of eyes and ears, it was better to take the initiative and handle the matter beautifully. Zhang Kunjiaâs wife was also respectable woman, so the girl could use the senior servant to establish her footing in the household.
Asking of her own volition like this meant that Missus Zhang could come to and fro in the daytime, but it wouldnât be seemly for her to stay the night. This meant that the newlywedâs routine wouldnât be disturbed. This killed many birds with one stone.
Truth be told, née Yao was feeling a mix of emotions.
She was happy for her son that he had such a smart wife. This would be a great boon, and at least the girl would know what action was most appropriate for the time.
On the flip side, she was worried to have such a sharp individual by her side. It was one thing if the two of them remained on good terms, but if any friction developed and they fought, née Yao wouldnât necessarily be on the winning side.
Pang Xiao grew anxious the longer his mother remained silent. He often heard stories of how difficult life became when mothers and daughters-in-law didnât get along. But if he appeared too protective of Qin Yining in front of his mother, that would also elicit jealousy. Trouble would still fall on his wifeâs head when he wasnât at home. He could only stand there mutely, trying valiantly to guess what was on his motherâs mind.
Née Ma hated to see things drag out. âDafuâs wife is talking to you, whereâs your mind gone off to? If you canât spare Missus Zhang, then Iâll send one of my own.â
âMom, I think itâs a very good idea to send Zhang Kunjiaâs wife. I was just wondering if one person was enough. I need to summon everyone in the household and thoroughly reorganize everyone.â
Qin Yining could vaguely guess at what her mother-in-law had been musing over. She gave thanks with a smile, and there wasnât much disappointment in her heart.
Strictly speaking, she wasnât close to Pang Xiaoâs family yet. A grandmother-in-lawâs attitude towards junior would naturally be different from a mother-in-lawâs. Her own mother hadnât been that good to her when sheâd first returned home, but see how close they were now after prolonged periods?
Time revealed a personâs heart, and it wasnât like she was scheming after something from the Pangâs. Née Yao would surely like her in the future.
Seeing that the conversation was about over, Pang Xiao suggested, âMom, we need to head into the palace later to express gratitude for the imperial favor. We may not make it back for lunch.â
Anything having to do with the palace made née Yao fret over her son. Thinking of Pang Xiaoâs identity and how the family might be âinvitedâ into a palace for a âvacationâ whenever he set off to do battle, it was a good thing that she had such a smart daughter-in-law.
Née Yaoâs eyes softened when she looked at Qin Yining. âHurry and get yourselves ready. Donât be late, or His Majesty will find fault with you then.â
âUnderstood.â Qin Yining rose to curtsey to Yao Chenggu, née Ma, and née Yao before leaving with Pang Xiao.
