I couldnât believe my ears.
What a WEIRD motherfucker.
Every second I expected him to cackle like Hans Landa and say, Ooooh, thatâs a bingo!
But when he finally stopped talking, the silence was even creepier.
I looked at Massimo and whispered, âWhat are we going to do?â
âGet the hell out of here,â he whispered back.
He reached up on a table and grabbed a knife â the one from the mercenary heâd killed in the speedboat in Venice. That had only been three and a half weeks ago, but it felt like a lifetime.
Then he began poking at the gaps between the floorboards, trying to lift them up. He finally gave up 30 minutes later when he pried up one of the floorboards and saw what was underneath.
âFuckinâ concrete foundation,â he muttered. âI wish Iâd picked a shittier cabin to stay in.â
I laughed.
He looked over at me in surprise. âWhatâs so funny?â
âWho wouldâve thought weâd want the worst place possible to stay? And who couldâve guessed weâd get hunted by Elmer Fudd?â
Massimo frowned. âElmer Fudd?â
âThe little bald cartoon guy who hunts Bugs Bunny? âBe vewy, vewy quietâ¦ââ
Massimo snorted with laughter, then shook his head. âThis isnât funny.â
ââ¦itâs kind of funny.â
He gave me a sideways look, obviously recalling our discussion three weeks ago about my butt chin.
To his credit, though, he didnât call me Chinderella.
âWhat do we do?â I asked.
âWe figure out a way to get out of here.â
âWhy canât we just go out the front? I mean, heâs in the back, right?â
âA guy this smart wouldnât leave something like that to chance. Like he said, he knows weâll either try to wait him out or weâll run for it.â Massimo stopped and thought for a second. âBut if I distract himâ¦â
âHow?â
âIâll shoot at him.â
âHowâs that going to help us?â
âItâll distract him while you escape.â
It took me a second to realize what he meant â and when I did, I shook my head violently. âNO. Iâm not leaving you.â
âBabe â â
âNO.â
âLucia⦠if you get out of this while I keep him pinned down, you can get to town and call Niccolo. Iâll give you the number. Then you can hide out until Lars comes, and he can save me when he gets here.â
âWhat if Zollner just goes deeper into the woods so you canât shoot him and then he circles around after me?â
âIâll know if he does that, and then I can leave the cabin and go after him. At that point, youâll have a big enough head start that it wonât matter. He wonât be able to catch up with you. Not if Iâm coming after him, too.â
âWhat if he was lying about being the only one? What if there are others out there?â
Massimo got a pained look on his face. âThatâs a possibility⦠and youâll have to be prepared for it.â
âPrepared how?â
âThe one thing they donât want is to kill you. Which means theyâll be hesitant to shoot at you⦠but you can shoot at them.â
I got sick to my stomach as I thought about the man Iâd killed in the barn.
Worse, I thought about the tailspin it had sent me into for the next several hours.
âI canât⦠please donât ask me to do thatâ¦â
âI wouldnât if it wasnât absolutely necessary.â
âBut â â
âDo you remember what I told you my job is?â
ââ¦to keep me and our children safe.â
He nodded. âAnd do you remember what I said your job is?â
ââ¦to keep the kids safe. But there arenât any kids â itâs just you and me.â
He smiled as he gently placed a hand on my waist. âYou donât know that. You havenât been on the pill for weeks now.â
Tears sprang to my eyes. âStop â thatâs not fair. Youâre just trying to manipulate me â â
âYouâre right, I am. Because I would do anything to make sure youâre safe. Iâd even try to manipulate you into saving yourself⦠and maybe our unborn child.â
I started to cry. âIsnât there another way?â
âIf you run for it, we have a chance. If you donât, heâll just do what he said and wait until we starve to death. If we go now, we have all our strength and energy. This is the best shot we have â right now.â
âThen come with me.â
âSomebodyâs got to occupy him while you get away.â He smiled. âWho knows⦠maybe Iâll get lucky and shoot the bastard.â
âPlease donât make me do this,â I begged.
âThis is the only way. At least, itâs the only way weâve got.â He kissed me softly, then pulled back to look in my eyes. âWill you do it?⦠For me?â
I lay there looking at him, tears rolling down my cheeks⦠and finally nodded yes.
âThank you,â he whispered gratefully, then kissed me again.
