âWhatâs going on?â Aurelio demanded from where he stood beside me. Once the gunfire had started getting closer, heâd retreated inside the bell tower like a coward.
âOur friends have gathered at the courtyard, just as we expected,â Zollner said with a chuckle.
âMassimo?â Aurelio asked.
My heart skipped a beat when the bastard said his name.
âHeâs there, but he still has that verdammt shield of his.â
âWhat about Adriano?â
âI believe the other brother is⦠yes, he poked his head out for a peek, now heâs gone again. I believe he is going to make a run for it.â Zollner chuckled. âSeven for seven, coming up.â
âWhat about Lars?â
âThe Swede? Havenât seen him.â
âHeâs supposedly good with a rifle.â
Zollner snorted. âIf he thinks he can make the shot, heâs welcome to try.â
My mind raced frantically.
If somebody was going to run out into the courtyard â Massimo or one of his brothers â
I had to distract Zollner.
So I screamed at the top of my lungs with my best ear-piercing, blood-curdling shriek.
