I
I was starving. Couldnât remember the last time I had food. Before my brother tried to poison me, and

even before then I was too stressed out to worry about it. My stomach rumbled audibly in protest, and I received a sardonic smirk from Vincent.
âSorry, Your Majesty, food is in short supply here. Hardly anything alive here except rodents and birds. And maybe a snake or the occasional lizard.â His light grey eyes mocked me. âNot what youâre used to, is it, Your Majesty?â
That I could believe, having not scented any other large living thing during my venture into the petrified woods.
âCome with me, Ben. Weâll scare something up.â Adolf called to the younger male and together they went out of the shelter to hunt.
âHow long have you been out here?â I asked Vincent. I was becoming increasingly selfâconscious of my nakedness. Although werewolves were comfortable being naked around our own, still I felt the she- wolvesâ eyes on me and being mated my wolf didnât like it one bit. Couldnât blame them though, I was wellâmuscled and wellâendowed. Not too brag, or anything.
âItâs hard to say, your Majesty,â Selene answered, âThereâs hardly a difference between night and day here.â
Looking at her scarred face, it crossed my mind to ask what happened to her, but I reigned my curiosity in. It wouldnât be appropriate for me to ask her something so personal.
âMaybe four?â Vincent guessed. âVamps come sniffing around on and off. So far weâve managed to avoid them. Theyâre not really bothered about us.â
âGood. They will regret that mistake.â Complacency gets one killed.
âYou seem so sure of yourself, Your Majesty.â Vincent peered at me underneath his heavy brows where he sat hunched down against the rocks.

âYou can call me Amaris. Here we are equal.â I hoped he would try to accept that I harbored no ill will against them or to try and at least trust me. âWhere do they keep the werewolves? If we can get in, we could set them free.â
He got up, opened up his arms to display his ravaged body. âLook at us! We donât stand a chance against those leeches. Weâre practically starving, hardly able to shift into our wolves. The others in the dungeons wonât be much better. They feed on them, torture them. Make them drink wolfsbane. The females are subjected to their perverse pleasures, compelled to obey. The strongest of us â and I use that term very lightly â are used in their fighting games. No, Your Majesty, you want to lead us on a suicide mission.â
âSo, what then, Vincent? Do you want to hide away here and die of starvation or fight like a wolf! At least if we die, we go down with honor.â It was not in my nature to go down without a fight. Raine was the only incentive I needed to keep trying. That and to kill that bastard Athan.
âEasy for you to say.â Vincent turned a haggardâlooking face towards me. âYou have no idea what weâve been through. And do you think the others would welcome you as their savior? We were led to believe that it was your doing that put us here in this hell. Iâm still not convinced of your innocence.â
What the did I have to do to convince the stubborn wolf?
âVincent, what choice do we have?â Nola, the eldest female said, âWeâve lost everything. I would rather die fighting than wait for death here.â
I admired her spirit. She was in even worse shape than them, but she had fire. Adolf and Ben returned then with five rats and two scrawny birds.
âDinner is served, Your Majesty.â Adolf bowed deeply, grinning. âWe managed to go undetected at least.â
We had to eat them raw because it was too risky to make a fire. It was mildly disgusting, but it filled a space. For the moment. We ate in silence. I noticed Ben giving half of his share to Serene. Interesting.
âThe king wants us to go back to the dungeons.â Vincent told the two males. âOn a rescue mission.â I could tell from the way he glanced at them he wasnât totally on board with my plan.
âI donât expect you to fight. Just get me in there. I told them. They exchanged looks between them and it was clear they could link each other.

After a brief discussion between them Vincent said, âWeâre not cowards, Amaris.â Vincent turned to me, picking meat out of his teeth with a bone. âThere doesnât seem to be a way out of this realm.â
âI have a witch helping on our side. My Beta will make sure she finds me. Help me get the others out and we can all escape.â I only hoped that Joanna would still be willing to help, knowing how Sorin reacted
presence. It was a gamble which I had no choice but to take.
to her
âA witch?â Benâs face contorted in disgust. âAre you sure she can be trusted?â
I wasnât sure I could trust anyone at this stage. âShe got me into the castle. She can get us out.â
I followed the five in my wolf form because Rage blended into the environment seamlessly and I felt we had a better chance for defense against the vampires if attacked.
âThere is an entrance on the south side of the cliff. If weâre lucky there wonât be many guards. They tend to be lazy, complacent that the werewolves are too weak or too compelled to offer any resistance.â Vincent said, speaking in low tones.
Ben snorted, âWell, we are the lucky onesâ¦â
Rage grumbled, âUntil their luck decides to run out. Letâs hope weâre long gone before then.
âYouâre such an optimist, Rage.â I couldnât help but smile at my wolfâs attitude.
We reached the spot that Vincent talked about and as luck would have it, there were more than a handful of guards standing around. Dressed in black, armed with silver blades, some had crossbows and arrows there was no way to get past them without risking serious injury or worse.
â ! Too many of them.â Adolf groaned. âHow are we going to get past them without bringing the hordes down on us?â
We needed a distraction. I turned back into my human form to speak to the five. Rage already knew what I had in mind, and he was having a hissy fit over it.
âYouâre going to get us killed, Human!â He always calls me human when he disapproves.

âNot if youâre fast enough, Wolf.â I growled back at him. âI have a plan.â I told my lucky five.
