Chapter 107
AMARIS
I had the most beautiful dream. Raine was right beside me, touching my face and my lips. So real, this dream, that I imagined I saw her gorgeous face, felt her tears drip onto my mouth. I even imagined her scent, that alluring flowery scent which was like a drug to my senses. Momentarily, I forgot about the pain and the poison coursing through my body. Never wanting the dream to end, I gave myself over to it, letting my muscles relax.
Her musical voice was all I heard, telling me that everything will be fine. Assuring me I will be fine. I smiled a bit at that. Maybe dying wasnât so bad after all.
But then something strange happened. A new energy flowed through me. It burned through my veins like wildfire, scorching the poison out of my system. Am I dead? What is happening? Rage. lifted his head.
âRage, I thought you were gone!â Thank the Goddess it was only a dream that he had turned to dust.
âIâm here, Amaris. Our mate is here. She is saving us. His voice was weak at first, but as I grew. stronger, so did he.
âRaine?â I forced my eyes open.
And there she was, lying on a cot next to mine, tubes sticking out of her arm and into mine. I smelled the sweet metallic scent of her blood.
âWhat the hellâ¦â I sat up abruptly, my head spinning with the sudden movement.
Joanna and Gwynneth rushed to my side.
âLie still, Your Majesty.â Gwynneth pushed me back onto the pillows. âYour wound is still healing.â
âRaineâ¦â I watched her face slowly drain of color. âNo! No! Stop this now! Youâre killing her.â I pushed Gwynneth away from me with such force that she thudded into the wall on the opposite
side.
I plucked the tube out of my arm, spilling precious blood onto the tiled floor. Pinching her arm, I gently removed the needle from my mateâs arm and licked and the insertion mark. Her perfect skin closed up, leaving no trace of the needle mark.
âAmaris, she wanted to do this to save you. And sheâs succeeded.â Joannaâs soft voice did nothing to soothe my fury and worry. Fury that she did this to save me and worry that it the cost was too much.
She was limp in my arms as I cradled her against my chest. I lowered my head to her breast to listen for a heartbeat. It was there, but faint. My anxiety grew as I fondled her belly, waiting to hear that small flutter of my unborn pupâs heart. I heard nothing.

Chapter 107
âNo, no, noâ¦â I groaned, my heart tearing itself to pieces. âWhat have you done?â
A girl Iâve never seen before rouched my shoulder. I snarled at her to back off.
âYour Majesty, my name is Pippa. Raine helped me to escape from the High Magusâ coven.â
âAt the moment, I donât give a ! Leave me be!â I couldnât stop the tears from running down my cheeks. Iâve never cried before in my life. Raine has sacrificed herself for me. But whatâs the use of living if I donât have her and my child?
âYour brother tried to take her. And heâs coming here with the Dragon Lord to take your throne.â The little blonde girl kept on talking like I wanted to hear what she was saying.
âHe can have it!â I snarled at her, my canines bursting through. âWhat use am I without my queen and my son?â
Rhona put herself between me and the blonde witch. âPull yourself together! Will you let Miladyâs sacrifice go to waste? You selfish prick!â She waved her finger in front of my face.
A heavy silence descended on the room, consuming all sounds. I turned to face Rhona, who stood her ground, her wolf surfacing through her eyes.
âWhat did you say to me?â my voice sounded low and guttural. I laid Raine down gently back onto the cot and drew myself up to my full height.
Rhona lifted her chin in defiance. âYou heard me. Are you letting her sacrifice for our kingdom go to shit? The dragons are coming! They will destroy us if you donât defend us. That is why Milady did what she did!â
âRhonaâ¦.â Joannaâs voice held a clear warning. But my usually submissive servant wasnât about to hold back.
She was right, though. I was selfish. When it came to my mate, I wouldnât want to be anything else. Just as she was about to open her mouth to give me another piece of her mind, I saw her eyes widen and her mouth hang open, slack jawed.
Joanna and Pippa gasped in unison. I followed their wideâeyed stares. A strange glow surrounded Riane and seemed to emanate from her body. The greenishâblue light filled the room, illuminating everything inside the infirmary.
I wanted to pull her into my arms. But the light enveloping her was like a shield. I couldnât reach
her.
âWhat the hell is happening?â I turned to Joanna and Pippa.
âOh dear Goddess Selene!â Joatina dropped to her knees, followed by Pippa. âThe Magus is dead!â
What does that have to do with my mate? âWhat is this?â I yelled at them. The windows shivered at the sound of my voice.
Chapter 107
âShe has ascended. The Magus power transferred to his kin upon his death.â Pippa, the little blonde witch, lifted cornflower blue eyes to mine. âRaine is now the High Magus.â
The moment the strange light disappeared into Raineâs body, she jolted upright, her eyes wide with wonder and her breath caught in her throat.
âRaine!â I had her in my arms before she had time to blink.
âAmaris, youâre alive!â Her hands cupped my face, tears of relief streamed down her cheeks even though she was smiling. âI thought I would never get her on time.â
I didnât know what to do. Should I be angry? Should I be relieved? âMy love, what you dangerous, irresponsible. Our childâ¦â
did was
She wiped the corners of my eyes with her thumbs and right before she pressed her lips to mine; she said. âHeâs fine.â
