Sean returned to Alyssaâs side after completing his task. He quizzed, âAre you really going easy on Ms.
Harper? This is the nicest youâve ever been.â
Sean couldnât help but smile when he noticed Alyssaâs high heels carelessly strewn on the floor. He neatly placed them under her table.
Meanwhile, Alyssa was engrossed in a gaming session, relaxing by wreaking havoc in the virtual world.
Lucifer, also known as the Queen of Killers, had become a revered figure for most players in the gaming community.
Every time she live-streamed her gameplay, sheâd attract hundreds of thousands of viewers, further proving her popularity.
She snickered. âWho do you take me as? Be kind to her? Iâm an enthusiastic philanthropist, but Iâm no Mother Teresa.
âI havenât dealt with her because I do not have solid evidence. Betty was her scapegoat, and she wasnât directly implicated. My hands are tied now.â
âLooks like Ms. Harper has really rubbed you the wrong way,â Sean said indignantly. âShe doesnât seem remorseful at all. She even shot you a hostile glare before leaving, as if she could tear you apart!â
âYeah, like thatâs even possible. She should keep her thoughts as thoughts. She wouldnât want it to backfire and make herself the clown.â
Her phone rang from Jonahâs call. She hurriedly picked up and cooed, âJonah!â
âLyse, are you still at the hotel?â he inquired.
âYes, Iâm in my office.â
âAh, that means Seanâs with you, right?â he lowered his voice.
Alyssa cleverly excused herself by heading toward the door, pretending she needed to use the bathroom.
She didnât want the sensitive Sean to catch on that she was intentionally avoiding him.
After closing the door to her private bathroom, she whispered, âWhatâs going on? Does this have something to do with Sean?â
Jonah replied, âItâs not directly related to Sean, but itâs connected somehow. I canât speak freely with him around. Javier sought Seanâs brother, Simon. He is helping to bail out Betty. Simon is on his way to pick Alyssaâs expression darkened as she murmured, âWith Simon Lynchâs help, Betty has a better chance of being released.â
Jonah said, Simon Lynch is crafty and bold. Heâs never lost a case in his decades-long career and wonât let it happen now. Heâll do whatever it takes to clear Bettyâs name.â
He paused and added gently, âIf I were him, Iâd start by dealing with that reporter. Sheâs the key witness against Betty right now.â
Alyssa sighed, âI get what you mean, but I have no influence over Abigail Grant. Sheâs under Jasperâs control at the moment.â She took a deep breath and composed herself.
She added, âIâll handle this on my own. You and Silas should stay out of it, especially him. I canât risk involving a civil servant in this case. It could be used against us.
After the conversation, Alyssa emerged, looking more somber. She hadnât cared much about a loser like Betty. Her true target was Sophia Kirkman.
Her only concern was that these new developments might upset Sean, who was sensitive and carried a heavy sense of responsibility. She didnât want him crying in front of her again.
Deep in thought, she made her way back to her desk.
âAlyssa.â
She heard a captivating voice call out to her, causing her to halt in her tracks. Her heart squeezed as she turned around.
To her surprise, there was no one there.
She shook her head and massaged her temples. She must have been seeing things due to her recent lack of sleep.
