âWatch your manners, Lauren! Weâre having dinner with Grandpa here!â Sophia quipped.
âAlright, alright. Thatâs enough. Itâs just a fork. No reason to get upset at the girl,â Newton retorted.
Lauren was his favorite granddaughter, after all.
Sophia clenched her fists angrily under the table. Everything she did was wrong in the eyes of this old man!
âGrandpa, Mom, Dad⦠Iâm done with my meal,â Lauren said softly, then hurriedly left the table.
Jasperâs eyes narrowed as he watched his sister leave, and certain thoughts appeared in his mind.
Bettyâs gleeful mood had increased double fold.
She thought that Lauren didnât have to endure such a situation. Lauren could have remained the familyâs insignificant, almost invisible member for the rest of her life.
Regrettably, Lauren had chosen to attempt to seduce her man. That was why she felt the need to teach Lauren a lesson and assert her dominance in the situation.
âBut why Landon?â Newton asked with a frown. âDidnât he like Alice?â
Javier, Sophia, and Bettyâs face turned an ugly shade of red.
Jasper coughed violently, having been drinking some water. His grip on the glass tightened.
âWhat are you saying, Grandpa? Why would Landon like Alyssa?â Betty huffed, her face reddened with anger.
âOf course he does. I may be 80, but my eyes and ears still function properly. I saw how devoted Landon was to Alice. He couldnât keep his eyes or attention off of her during my birthday celebration. Heâs a smart, keen boy, that one.â
Newton then glanced at Jasper. âI even thought of marrying Alice to him at the time. Theyâd make the perfect pair. Plus, Landon would treat her like a queen, unlike some. Sheâd definitely have a happy married.
life ahead of her then.â
Upon learning that Alyssa would spend the rest of her life happily with Landon, Jasper felt incredulous.
Jasperâs grip on his glass was slowly weakening, almost imperceptibly. He couldnât help but sense that Newton was indirectly chastising him.
But Jasper couldnât bear the thought of Landon marrying Alyssa. The man who lost his virginity at 16 and âAm I still your granddaughter, Grandpa?â Betty cried. âIâm the one who likes Landon Harper right now, not Alyssa! Shouldnât you be helping me instead? Why would you want to match him to Alyssa Taylor?â
âDoes Landon feel the same way about you?â Newton asked.
âThat⦠Iâ¦â Betty was stumped.
âI saw how he treated you the night of my birthday. You two didnât even exchange a single word. He doesnât care for you at all.â
Betty gritted her teeth, unable to retort because she knew Newton was right.
Newton advised, âJust because you wouldnât be forced into an arranged marriage doesnât mean that you should force something that isnât there. Youâll only end up wasting your time and embarrassing yourself.
Newton shook his head and continued, âYour personalities donât match, either. With Landonâs temper, you two wouldnât have a day of peace.â
Grandpa!â Betty whined, nearly crying in desperation.
*Donât go asking Betty that, Dad.â Javier stepped in to help his daughter. âWomen tend to be shy.
âItâs not like Landon has no feelings for Betty, either. He came by the other day just to talk to Betty.
Sophia and I both saw it with our own eyes.â
Bettyâs heart clenched, recalling how Landon had spoken to her that day. Tears pooled in her eyes.
So what if Landon hated her guts?
As long as she married him and became his wife, she was sure heâd eventually fall in love with her after spending time together!
