âEmma never regained consciousness,â Benjamin teared up as he spoke. âShe was still fighting for her life, so Master Adelmar made a gambleâ¦â
âEmmaâ¦â Abel stumbled forward on shaky legs.
Luca immediately stepped forward to support him. âCalm down, Mr. Abelâ¦â
âAbel, you donât look too good. Are you unwell?â Benjamin asked out of concern.
âMy gastroenteritis has worsened,â Abelâs face scrunched up in pain. âBut I wonât die so easily. At least, not yetâ¦â
âWhat do you mean?â Benjamin frowned. âYouâre Mr. Abel Ryker, the devil from hell himself! How can you be so weak and pathetic?!â
âIâll be fine as long as Emma is fine,â Abel chuckled bitterly. âIf anything happens to her, Iâ¦â
Benjamin interrupted Abel before he could finish his sentence. âDonât forget your four children! Love isnât everything, Abel!â Benjamin snapped at him.
âWhat about you then, huh?â Abel challenged. âBenjamin⦠No, Benedict, what would you do if anything happens to Emma?â
âIâ¦â Benjamin looked down at his feet, unable to answer Abel.
âDidnât you just say love isnât everything? Donât be a hypocrite, Benjamin! Can you really let Emma go?â
Abel chided.
Fat tears streamed down Benjaminâs face as he choked out, âI canât!â
Janie felt her heart sink as Benjamin confirmed her worst fear. His heart only had space for Emmeline despite having slept with her. He was only trying to do the responsible thing as a man, but he was unable to give her what she wanted â true feelings. Still, Janie refused to give up. She rushed over to Benjamin and embraced him.
âYou canât say that, Ben! You still have me, and I already belong to you. You canât just leave meâ¦â
Janie cried out.
âSilly,â Benjamin comforted her, stroking her back. âIâm not saying Iâll leave you. Iâve already promised you marriage, but I canât give you love. Do you understand how I feel now?â
âI understand, I doâ¦â Janie sobbed. âI miss Emma too, you know. If anything happened to her, Iâll be crushed too, but you need to hang in there. I canât replace Emmeline, but Iâll be right there with you all the wayâ¦â
The group left the room, with Luca helping Abel and Janie holding onto Benjamin. Luca prayed to any higher power that was listening to help Mr. Abel and bring Ms. Emma back safely.
As if remembering something, Janie looked up at Benjamin. âSo your name is Benedict Adelmar?
Youâre one of them?â
âI was adopted by Master Adelmar,â Benjamin explained. âYork was my original family name, but all of the children that he took in will change their last name to Adelmar. Weâre not his real children, but we do serve the family in whatever capacity we can.â
âBenjamin, which island is Emma on? Can you take me there?â Abel asked.
Benjamin considered Abelâs request for a moment before nodding softly. âReturn to your guest rooms for now and come back here at nine. Iâll bring you to Emma.â
âThatâs great!â Abel exclaimed, slightly choked with emotion. âWeâll come back at nine.â
They returned to the lounge only to find several maids waiting to bring them to their guest rooms.
Together with the four bodyguards they brought along, Abelâs entourage took up five rooms in the Adelmar manor. Not long after settling down in their rooms, one of the maids invited Abel and his group for dinner with Waylon Adelmar.
âMr. Abel, the boys and I wonât be joining for dinner. Why donât you and Janie go ahead?â Luca suggested.
âMr. Waylon has already made dining arrangements for everyone. He would insist for everyone to join,â
the maid explained. Luca and the bodyguards had no choice but to join in for dinner as well.
The group made their way to the lavish dining hall, where dinner was already served neatly on the table. Waylon Adelmar sat at the head of the table waiting for his guests. His eyes lit up when he spotted Abel.
âMr. Ryker! Please have a seat,â Waylon greeted politely.
âJust call me Abel,â Abel insisted. âAs you said, weâre not exactly strangers.â
âMhmm,â Waylon nodded. âEmma is my fatherâs only disciple and my only sister, so youâre rightfully my brother-in-law.â
âSounds about right, bro,â Abel jested.
Waylon nodded and chuckled lightly, enjoying the camaraderie.
