âIâm just begging you to tell me where Emma is. As long as I can see her, Iâm willing to accept any punishment you give me,â Abel pleaded with Robert Adelmar.
âKeep waiting here then!â Robert huffed. âOne day, when it suits my mood, perhaps Iâll think about it!â
âMaster Adelmar!â Abel called out, but the old man had already stormed out of the door.
Just as Abel let out a defeated sigh, Waylon Adelmar entered the room. âMr. Adelmar,â Abel greeted although he was visibly in pain.
âMy father is acting out only because of how much he is hurting. Please forgive him, Mr. Ryker,â
Waylon explained.
âMaster Adelmar was more than gracious. I know heâs hurting over Emma, and I could tell he was reigning his anger in. I wouldâve let him beat me up willingly because this was all my fault,â Abel said dejectedly.
âItâs good that you understand. Weâre Emmaâs family after all,â Waylon remarked.
âBut how is she? Please, Mr. Adelmar, Iâm begging you to let me see her just once,â Abel begged once more.
Waylon shook his head. âIâm afraid I cannot promise you that.â
âMr. Adelmar, what about Benjamin? Can we see him instead?â Janie tried her luck.
Waylon contemplated her request for a moment before finally nodding. âFollow me,â he said, before leading Abel, Luca and Janie toward the east wing of the manor. They walked through the corridors of the building until they finally reached a tiny flight of stairs.
âBen is inside the room up these stairs,â Waylon said. âYou may go inside and see him. I wonât be following you.â
âThank you so much, Mr. Adelmar,â Abel extended his gratitude.
âYouâre welcome. Come back to the lounge after youâre done. Iâll get the guest rooms ready,â Waylon said. âBut Mr. Ryker, your stomach condition requires immediate treatment or the consequences will be dire,â Waylon added just as he was about to leave.
âI wonât receive treatment before I get to see Emma,â Abel said with strong determination in his voice.
âYou donât have to persuade me any further.â
âAlright thenâ¦â Waylon turned to leave.
Abelâs group rushed up the stairs and reached a wooden door with intricate carvings of roses and twines. Janie knocked on the door several times.
âMr. Benjamin⦠Mr. Benjamin, are you in there?â she asked out loud, but there was no response. Luca was about to reach for the heavy wooden doorknob when the door creaked and opened on its own.
Upon entering the room, they found Benjamin right there, dressed in a black silk shirt and black pants, looking like he had lost ten pounds in a short amount of time.
Benjamin looked stunned to see three familiar faces staring at him, almost as if he could not believe his eyes. âAm I dreaming?â he wondered aloud. âI thought I mustâve been hearing thingsâ¦â
Abel immediately went up to Benjamin and tugged him by the collar. âBen, whereâs Emma?â he growled.
âAbel, how did you find your way here?â Benjamin asked in return.
âStop asking me questions and answer me! Is Emma here?!â Abel demanded to know desperately.
âMs. Louise isnât here,â Benjamin confirmed. âThis is where Iâm supposed to be reflecting on my mistakes. Why would she be here?â
âReflecting on your mistakes? Is this Master Adelmarâs punishment for you?â Janie asked curiously.
âHe did not have to punish me. It was my own choice. Iâm filled with regret every single day for not accompanying Ms. Louise that day,â Benjaminâs voice was hoarse.
âItâs not your fault,â Abel choked. âAs her husband, it was my fault for not being able to protect her well enough.â
âStop it, you two!â Janie interrupted. âBen, just tell me where Emma is. How is she?â
âSheâs not on this island. Master Adelmar sent her to another islandâ¦â Benjamin explained.
âWhat?â Abelâs heart raced as he processed this information. âWhy is sheâ¦?â
