âItâs all⦠up to fateâ¦?â Abelâs face paled as he stammered. âHas sheâ¦â
Robert could not bring himself to answer Abel either, but his eyes began to well up with tears.
Emmelineâs injuries were so severe that only a higher power could save her now.
âUghhhâ¦â Abel clutched his abdomen and writhed in pain all of a sudden before throwing up all over the sofa. Robert stalked over and clapped him on the back twice with some force. To Abelâs surprise, the pain in his abdomen reduced drastically.
âYour stomach ulcers are extremely severe. Your stomach is bleeding out. Youâll die soon without treatment,â Robert said as a matter-of-factly.
âIâm not in any position to care for myself now,â Abel argued. âI have to see Emma.â
âTake this medicine first,â Robert insisted as he fished out a small plastic film with some brown powder inside. âGet someone to mix this into a drink for you!â
âThank you, Master Adelmar!â Luca exclaimed as he reached his hand out to receive the medicine, but his hand was swatted away by Abel instead. Abel grabbed the medicine bag himself, opened it and poured the contents on the floor.
âWhat are you doing?â Robert raised an eyebrow in challenge.
âMr. Abelâ¦â Luca and Janie were equally dumbfounded.
âMaster Adelmarâ¦â Abel began. âIâm very grateful for your help, but until I see Emma with my own eyes, I will not be receiving any treatment. Pleaseâ¦. Please let me see Emma.â
âThatâs impossible!â Robert waved him off. âYou should be thankful Iâm not pursuing charges against you, and now you have the gall to ask to see her? Dream on!â
âEmmaâs my wife. Sheâs the mother of my four children,â Abel bit out. âYou donât have any right to keep her away from me!â
âI told you sheâs on the cusp of death. She canât see or hear you!â Robert was on the verge of yelling.
âI must see her no matter what,â Abel insisted, trying to stand up from the sofa. âIâm begging you!!â
âNo way,â Robert was as unmoving as a mountain. âYouâre not getting anywhere near her!â
âWhy do you have to be so cruel?â Abel asked. âIs it because of the feud between the Rykers and the Adelmars?â
âHa! I bet you heard about that from your grandfather, didnât you?â Robertâs chest puffed up. âOscar Ryker may have held a grudge against the Adelmars, but we certainly donât bear any ill will toward the Rykers. Otherwise, you wouldnât even be standing in front of me right now.â
âWh⦠what do you mean?â Abel did not fully understand the old manâs words.
âYou should ask your grandfather. I canât be bothered to explain it all to youâ¦â Robert mused.
âAbel was silent for a moment before speaking. âIf you wonât allow me to see Emma, can I at least see Benjamin York?â
âBenjamin?â Robertâs tone held a sharp edge. âWhy would you want to meet a dead man walking?â
âDead man walking?!â Janie gasped. âWhat did you do to Benjamin?â
âHmph!â Robert cut Janie a sharp glance. âWho are you, and how dare you speak to me like that?â
âIâ¦â Janieâs face was flush with embarrassment. âIâm⦠Benâs woman. I have the right to ask about him!â
âBenedictâs life belongs to the Adelmars!â Robert boomed. âHe doesnât report to anyone else besides me!â
âWe just want to see him. Whatâs the big deal?â Abell retorted.
âNo means no!â Robert yelled before pointing an accusatory finger at Janie. âDid that punk forget to protect Emma because he was too caught up in love?â
Ben in love with her? Janie chuckled bitterly. She wished that were true, but Ben never thought of them that way. He was completely devoted to Emmeline Louise.
âYou misunderstood me, Master Adelmar,â Janie explained herself. âBen was completed devoted to Emmeline. He would never neglect his duties toward her.â
âThen why did he allow my Emma to end up like that?â the agony was clear in Robertâs voice. âHeâd better be drowning in regret right now.â
âThen you should punish me too!â a tear fell down Abelâs cheek as he spoke. âI failed to protect Emma.
If you want to blame someone, Iâm willing to accept any punishment you dole out!â
âHmph! Youâre about to die anyway if you donât receive treatment soon. I donât need to punish you,â
Robert said.
